Search dark areas at night, especially in plains and savanna settings, for a zombie riding a zombie horse and carrying an iron spear. Remove the rider, tame the now-riderless horse as you would a normal horse, equip a saddle, and add horse armor before exposing it to daylight. Interact with the horse promptly so it becomes persistent instead of despawning.

What changed: zombie horses now spawn in Survival
Older Minecraft guides often say that zombie horses are unavailable through ordinary Survival play and require commands. That advice applies to older versions, not the current Mounts of Mayhem release. Mojang added natural zombie-horse encounters to Survival, and the feature is available on both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

Minecraft’s official announcement describes the encounter this way: “Zombie horses are charging into Survival mode! These passive mobs spawn at night, ridden by spear-wielding zombies. Unseat its rider and hop on board to tame this adorably undead mount!” The Java Edition 1.21.11 release notes likewise state that zombie horses can be tamed like regular horses and then mounted and controlled.
Use a current game version before searching. Mojang’s official FAQ recommends updating to the latest version, and the natural-spawn behavior is tied to the Mounts of Mayhem/Java 1.21.11-era release. If your world predates that update, a search can fail simply because the feature does not exist in that installation.

Where zombie horses spawn
Look at night, in darkness
Zombie horses spawn in darkness. Search after nightfall, underground openings, or other areas with a low light level rather than in a brightly lit base. Natural spawning is affected by the same practical problem as other hostile-mob encounters: torches, lanterns, and daylight remove the dark spaces in which the event can occur.
Start with plains and savanna biomes
The Java 1.21.11 notes identify plains and savanna biomes as places where zombie horses can spawn with a zombie rider holding an iron spear. Treat those as the best documented starting points, not as a guarantee that every spawn must be in one of them. The published notes do not establish a universal biome list or a fixed spawn percentage.

Recognize the complete encounter
The easiest sign is a mounted hostile mob: a zombie is sitting on the horse and carrying an iron spear. The zombie is the dangerous part of the encounter. The horse itself is passive and does not display hostile behavior toward players when it is riderless.
| What you observe | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A zombie horse with a spear-wielding zombie on top | This is the natural Survival encounter documented for Mounts of Mayhem. | Approach carefully and remove the rider. |
| A riderless zombie horse | The horse is passive but can still despawn if left unclaimed. | Interact with it immediately, then begin taming. |
| No horses after searching one area | A spawn is not guaranteed, and darkness, biome, and current-version requirements all matter. | Check the version, move to another dark plains or savanna area, and search on another night. |
How to get and tame one: exact Survival steps
1. Update the world and confirm the edition
- Install the current release available for your platform.
- Confirm that you are playing Minecraft Java Edition or Bedrock Edition with the Mounts of Mayhem content.
- Enter a Survival world where you can safely travel at night. Bring ordinary combat and travel supplies rather than relying on the horse encounter to provide protection.
The official material confirms the feature on both editions, but it does not establish identical command syntax between them. This guide therefore uses the natural-spawn route instead of presenting a command as a cross-edition substitute.
2. Prepare a safe search route
- Choose plains or savanna terrain so you can see a mounted mob at a distance.
- Search during the night or in naturally dark spaces.
- Carry blocks, food, and a way to create temporary cover. You will need shade once the horse is free.
- Keep a saddle and horse armor ready if you have them. The saddle is needed for controlled riding, and armor protects the horse from sunlight.
3. Find the mounted zombie
Scan open ground and dark edges for the distinctive silhouette of a horse carrying a zombie. The spear is a useful visual clue, but do not assume every zombie-horse encounter has identical equipment beyond what the release notes document. The published information identifies a zombie rider holding an iron spear; it does not provide a spawn-rate figure or guarantee a particular encounter frequency.

4. Remove the rider
Defeat the zombie or otherwise unseat it. Keep your attention on the rider’s attacks, because the rider is hostile while the horse is not. Once the zombie is gone, avoid treating the horse as an enemy: the riderless animal does not show hostile behavior toward players.
5. Interact with the riderless horse immediately
Do not leave the horse standing while you return for supplies. Zombie horses can despawn like hostile mobs. Interacting with one makes it persistent, so begin the taming interaction as soon as the rider is removed. This is both the safest way to claim the animal and the most reliable way to prevent losing it during the rest of the process.
6. Tame it like a regular horse
Use the normal horse-taming interaction for your edition: attempt to mount the riderless horse, allow the unsuccessful attempt to end, and repeat until the game accepts the horse as tamed. The Java release notes explicitly say that zombie horses are tamed “in the same fashion as regular Horses.” No separate zombie-horse taming item or special ritual is documented.
Stay near the animal while repeating the interaction. If hostile mobs are nearby, clear them or place temporary walls around the horse so the process is not interrupted. Once hearts indicate successful taming, the horse can accept riding equipment.
7. Equip a saddle before expecting controlled movement
A tamed zombie horse can be equipped with a saddle and then mounted and controlled. Taming alone does not make it a practical controllable mount. Open the horse’s inventory using your edition’s normal horse-inventory control, place the saddle in the saddle slot, and mount again. Without the saddle, you may be able to sit on the animal after taming, but you do not have the documented controlled-riding setup.

8. Add horse armor before sunrise
Zombie horses burn in sunlight. Horse armor protects them from that sunlight damage, so equip armor before taking the mount into daytime. If armor is not available yet, keep the horse under a roof, inside a stable, or in another shaded enclosure. A lead or fenced pen can help you keep the animal in place while you finish preparing it, but the essential protection is shade or horse armor.
9. Move it to a permanent shelter
After taming, saddling, and armoring the horse, move it to a stable or another location where it cannot wander into daylight unprotected. Interacting with it makes the mob persistent, but persistence does not remove the need to protect it from environmental damage. Build the shelter before the next night ends if you plan to keep the animal near your base.
Sunlight, armor, and survival of the mount
Why daylight is dangerous
Zombie horses burn in sunlight. This is the major difference between owning one and owning an ordinary horse: a successful tame does not make the undead mount immune to daytime damage. A horse left outside at sunrise can take damage even if it is saddled and standing still.
How horse armor helps
Horse armor protects zombie horses from sunlight damage. Put armor on the tamed horse through its horse inventory before you ride it into an open area. If you have not obtained armor, use a roof or enclosed stable instead. The armor requirement is a protection measure, not a taming requirement; the horse can be tamed first, but it should not be left in direct sun afterward.
A practical stable layout
- Use a solid roof that blocks the entire pen from direct daylight.
- Leave enough room to mount and open the horse inventory.
- Add a gate or fence so the horse cannot wander while you gather a saddle or armor.
- Keep the entrance usable at night, when you may want to ride out.
Zombie-horse capabilities and limits
Health and randomly assigned movement traits
The Java Edition 1.21.11 release notes list zombie horses at 25 health points, equal to 12.5 hearts. Their movement speed and jump strength are variable and are set when they spawn. That means two horses you find can feel different even when both are healthy and properly equipped; the published notes do not provide a single speed or jump value to expect from every animal.

Riding requirements
The useful sequence is: tame the horse, equip a saddle, then mount and control it. A saddle is required for practical controlled riding after taming. Horse armor is separate equipment whose key purpose here is protecting the horse from sunlight.
Persistence is not the same as invulnerability
Interacting with the horse makes it persistent, preventing the normal hostile-mob-style despawn behavior described in the Java notes. Persistence does not prevent sunlight damage, attacks from other mobs, falls, or other ordinary hazards. Treat the horse as a valuable tamed animal that still needs a safe environment.

Mounts of Mayhem makes natural zombie-horse spawning a Survival feature on both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The Java 1.21.11 notes provide the clearest published details about darkness, the rider, taming, equipment, health, and persistence. The official announcement confirms the feature’s availability across the two editions.
| Comparison point | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Natural Survival availability | Confirmed in the Mounts of Mayhem era; Java 1.21.11 notes document the behavior. | Confirmed as part of the Mounts of Mayhem release. |
| Version requirement | Use a current release; the documented notes are from Java 1.21.11. | Use the current release that includes Mounts of Mayhem. |
| Documented spawn conditions | Darkness at night; plains and savanna are documented locations; a zombie rider may carry an iron spear. | Natural spawning is confirmed, but the supplied official details do not establish a separate Bedrock biome list or spawn percentage. |
| Taming and riding | Tame like a regular horse, then saddle it to mount and control it. | The feature is available, but edition-specific control labels can differ by platform. |
| Commands | The natural-spawn method does not require commands. | Do not assume Java command syntax works unchanged; cross-edition command parity is not established here. |
| Sunlight protection | Horse armor protects the zombie horse from sunlight damage. | Use horse armor or a roofed shelter; the feature’s practical protection rule is the same. |
If a Bedrock world does not produce the encounter, first verify that the game has updated to the release containing Mounts of Mayhem. Then repeat the dark-night search rather than concluding that commands are mandatory.

No zombie horse appears
- Check the game version. A pre-Mounts-of-Mayhem installation will not have the current natural-spawn behavior.
- Search at night or in genuinely dark areas, not under bright artificial lighting.
- Try open plains or savanna terrain where a mounted silhouette is easy to spot.
- Move to another area and search on another night. No official spawn percentage is published, so one unsuccessful night does not indicate a bug.
The zombie attacks before you can claim the horse
Focus on removing the rider first. The horse is not the hostile target. Use cover or terrain to separate the spear-wielding zombie from the horse, then interact with the riderless animal immediately after the rider is defeated.

The horse disappears after you find it
It may have despawned because no player interaction made it persistent. On the next encounter, start taming or otherwise interact with the horse as soon as the rider is gone. Do not leave it unattended while returning to your base for equipment.

The horse dies at dawn
That is sunlight damage, not a taming failure. Equip horse armor before sunrise or put the animal under a solid roof. A saddle controls movement but does not protect the horse from daylight.
The horse will not respond to steering
Confirm both requirements: the horse must be tamed, and a saddle must be equipped. Riding an unsaddled or untamed animal does not provide the same controlled-mount behavior described in the Java release notes.
Common outdated claims to ignore
“Zombie horses require commands in Survival”
That statement belongs to older versions. In the Mounts of Mayhem release, natural Survival spawning is supported on Java and Bedrock.
“Every zombie horse spawns in one guaranteed biome”
The Java notes identify plains and savanna as spawning locations, but they do not establish a universal biome rule or guarantee that every encounter appears there. Use those biomes as a practical starting point without treating them as an absolute limit.
“The horse is hostile because the rider is hostile”
The rider is the hostile mob. The riderless zombie horse is passive toward players, which is why removing the rider rather than attacking the horse is the correct objective.
“A saddle alone prevents burning”
It does not. Horse armor protects against sunlight damage; otherwise keep the horse under cover.
Quick field checklist
- Current Java or Bedrock release with Mounts of Mayhem installed.
- Nighttime or a dark search area.
- Plains or savanna terrain as the documented starting point.
- A mounted zombie, often carrying an iron spear.
- Rider removed without killing the horse.
- Immediate interaction so the horse becomes persistent.
- Standard horse-taming interaction completed.
- Saddle equipped for controlled riding.
- Horse armor equipped before daylight, or a roofed shelter prepared.
- Stable or enclosed destination ready before you leave the horse unattended.
What the official documentation does not specify
Official release material gives the practical route but leaves several numerical details open. No spawn percentage, average search time, or taming-time statistic is published in the cited Java and Minecraft announcements. Movement speed and jump strength vary by individual horse, and no single universal value is specified. Likewise, the documented material confirms the feature on both editions without establishing identical command syntax or a complete Bedrock-specific biome table. Avoid guides that present those unverified details as guaranteed mechanics.
