What you are installing
Create Chronicles: The Endventure is a Minecraft 1.21.1 modpack built for NeoForge. A server must use the same Minecraft version, mod-loader family, and modpack release as the players’ clients. Mixing a Forge, Fabric, or older NeoForge package with the current client is a common cause of missing-mod and connection errors.

This guide will explain how to set up an server locally, or with a server host.

That sentence is the wiki’s description of its scope. The practical choice is between running the files on hardware you control and paying a managed provider to handle much of the deployment and day-to-day tooling.
Requirements and what they mean
The official setup documentation lists the following minimum baseline. These are requirements stated by the guide, not results from an independent performance test or a guaranteed player-capacity measurement.

Do not interpret the 8 GB and 3.5 GHz figures as a promise that every group will receive identical performance. The guide does not publish an independently measured player limit, tick-time study, or hardware benchmark for The Endventure. Allocate resources conservatively, watch the server console after launch, and leave capacity for the operating system and any other services on the machine.
Choose local or managed hosting
Local hosting
Local hosting means you download and operate the server files yourself, either on a home computer or on a privately managed machine. You control the filesystem, Java installation, launch arguments, backups, and update timing. There is no monthly game-server bill, although you still pay for hardware, electricity, storage, and an internet connection. You are also responsible for firewall, router, uptime, operating-system updates, and recovery when the machine is unavailable.
Managed hosting
A managed Minecraft host supplies a control panel and a remote machine. The useful advantages are faster deployment, provider-maintained networking, browser-based console and file access, scheduled or retained backups, and support when a process stops. The trade-offs are a recurring charge, provider-specific limits, and less control over the underlying operating system. Before ordering, confirm that the provider supports the exact Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge 1.21.1, and current server-pack release you intend to run.

A practical decision rule
- Choose local hosting when you already have suitable hardware, want complete control, and can handle networking, backups, and troubleshooting.
- Choose managed hosting when a control panel, one-click installation, remote console, automatic recovery tools, or support is worth the recurring cost.
- For either approach, verify the available RAM rather than relying on a plan’s marketing name. The official baseline is the amount assigned to the server process, not merely the total memory installed in a physical machine.
Install the server locally
The supplied server archive includes the launch scripts and configuration folders expected by the pack. Create a dedicated folder for the server instead of extracting it into your personal Minecraft client directory. A separate folder keeps worlds, logs, configuration, and update backups easy to identify.
1. Download the matching server archive
- Open the modpack’s CurseForge Files page.
- Select the server files for the release you want to run. For the current listing, the documented package is the 2.0.0 server archive for Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge.
- Save the download locally and keep the original archive until the installation is verified. It is useful as a clean source when you need to restore a file during troubleshooting.
Do not substitute the client profile for the server package. A client download can contain files that are not intended to launch a dedicated server, while the server archive is arranged for the included scripts and folders.
2. Extract into a new folder
- Create a new, dedicated directory such as
Endventure-Server. - Extract
Server-Files.zipinto that directory. - Check that the launch scripts and folders are directly inside the server directory rather than buried one level deeper in another extracted folder.
Keeping the path simple avoids errors caused by moving only part of the archive. If you later make a backup, copy the complete server directory or the specific world and configuration items you have documented, not just the executable script.
3. Make the Linux script executable
Windows users can continue with the batch file. On Linux, open a terminal in the extracted directory and run:
chmod +x startserver.shIf the shell reports a permission problem when you try to start the script, run the command again from the directory that actually contains startserver.sh. The command changes the file’s execute permission; it does not alter the modpack itself.

4. Perform the first launch
- On Windows, run
startserver.bat. - On Linux, run
startserver.sh. - Allow the first launch to continue without closing the window or killing the process. The initial run creates the server files needed for the next step.
The first start may take longer than subsequent starts because NeoForge and the pack are creating directories and generating initial data. Wait for the process to finish its first pass before making configuration changes.
5. Accept the EULA after files are generated
- Stop or close the initial process only after it has created the expected files.
- Open
eula.txtin a text editor. - Change
eula=falsetoeula=true, then save the file. - Start the server again with the same Windows or Linux script.
Starting with the EULA already changed is not the documented order. The first run is what generates eula.txt; edit the file only after it exists.
6. Set Java memory in usr_jvm_args.txt
The launch setup reads the Java arguments from usr_jvm_args.txt. The two values you will normally adjust are:
-Xms, the heap size Java requests at startup.-Xmx, the maximum heap size Java may use for the server process.
Set these values to a range your machine can sustain while still leaving memory for the operating system and other services. The official guide’s baseline is at least 8 GB of RAM; do not assign every installed gigabyte to -Xmx. After changing the file, restart with the normal script and watch the console for Java startup errors or an out-of-memory condition.

- Confirm the console reaches a ready state instead of stopping with a Java, NeoForge, or missing-file error.
- Check that the server is using Java 21 and NeoForge 1.21.1, not a different runtime or loader left over from another installation.
- Launch the client with the same Create Chronicles release and Minecraft version.
- Join from a test account or a second computer before announcing the server to a larger group.
- Stop the server cleanly and restart it once. A successful second start confirms that the generated files and memory settings persist.
Deploy through a server host
One-click installation
Many Minecraft hosts offer a modpack selector that installs a supported pack and loader automatically. In the control panel, search for Create Chronicles: The Endventure, then verify that the selected entry is Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge 1.21.1. A one-click button is convenient, but it does not remove the need to check the installed release against the client profile.

After installation, inspect the file manager for the same major folders used by the supplied archive, including config, defaultconfigs, kubejs, and mods. Confirm the panel’s Java selector is set to Java 21 before the first start.
Manual FTP or SFTP upload
- Download and extract the official server archive on your computer.
- Stop any blank or incompatible server instance created by the host’s default setup.
- Upload the extracted files through the provider’s FTP or SFTP tool.
- Set the server type, loader, and version in the panel to NeoForge 1.21.1, or select the provider’s custom-JAR mode if that is how the host exposes NeoForge.
- Choose Java 21, start once, and allow the files to generate.
- Edit
eula.txtafter the first start creates it, then restart.
Upload the complete extracted structure. Leaving out a pack folder can produce a server that starts but lacks recipes, scripts, or mods expected by the client.
Custom JAR workflows
Some panels require you to identify a custom server JAR or select a custom launch command. Use this route only when the host documents support for NeoForge 1.21.1 and the pack’s supplied startup files. Ask support where the provider expects usr_jvm_args.txt and whether the panel overwrites Java arguments on each restart. A host that silently replaces the pack’s launch command can ignore your memory settings or start a different loader.
Hosted post-install checks
- Open the live console and verify that the process remains running after startup.
- Use the file manager to confirm that
eula.txtandusr_jvm_args.txtare editable. - Test a clean stop and start from the panel.
- Check how the host exposes world downloads, scheduled backups, restore points, and save retention.
- Record the provider’s support path and the server region, because both affect recovery time and player latency.
Make the client and server agree
Every player should install the same modpack release used by the server. Match Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge 1.21.1, and the server archive’s mod set. If a player receives a missing-mod, rejected-connection, or incompatible-version message, compare the client’s profile with the server’s installed files before changing Java arguments.
The supplied documentation does not specify a universal public address or network port. For a local server, configure the operating system firewall and router according to your network equipment’s instructions. For a managed server, use the address and port shown in the provider panel. Do not publish an address until you have tested a connection from outside the host machine.

Updating a modded world is a filesystem operation, not just a button click. The official procedure starts with a complete shutdown and a world backup.
- Tell players to leave and stop the server completely. Wait until the process exits; do not copy files while the world is still being written.
- Make a separate backup of the world. Keep the backup outside the live server directory or download it from the host so a failed update cannot overwrite it.
- Download the new server archive that matches the intended client release.
- For a manual update, replace the live
config/,defaultconfigs/,kubejs/, andmods/folders with the corresponding folders from the new archive. - Preserve any provider-specific files, world folders, permissions, and launch settings that are not part of those replacement folders.
- Start the server and monitor the console for loader errors, script errors, or migration messages.
- Join with a test client before reopening the server to everyone.
Keep the pre-update backup until players have confirmed that their inventories, builds, and progression load correctly. If the update fails, stop the server, restore the backed-up folders and world, and return to the last known-good release before investigating further.

Feature checklist
- One-click installation: Confirm the exact pack, Minecraft version, and NeoForge version, not merely a generic modpack installer.
- RAM and CPU allocation: Check the guaranteed allocation and whether CPU time is shared. The plan’s headline RAM may include services outside the Java process.
- Backups and retention: Ask how many restore points exist, whether backups are automatic, and whether you can download a copy.
- Console and files: Ensure you can stop the server, edit
usr_jvm_args.txt, upload files, and read logs without opening a support ticket. - Update controls: Look for a safe update workflow and the ability to make a manual backup first.

- Geography and support: Select a nearby region for your players and verify support hours, response channels, and escalation for modded servers.
