You can’t search for or create a valid PIN for someone else’s live Kahoot! game. Ask the host for the code currently shown on their screen, or use the host’s join link or QR code. A live PIN expires when its game ends; Kahoot! also gives live PINs and QR codes a validity window of up to 8 hours, which is not a guarantee that a session will remain joinable for that long.
Where to get a live Kahoot! PIN
The host generates the PIN by starting a live game. Kahoot! does not provide a public directory where participants can search for active codes. Ask the person running the game to share the current PIN, a direct join link, or a QR code. Kahoot!’s help article on finding a PIN explains that participants need the host’s code.

Codes posted randomly online are not a dependable way to join a particular game: they may be old, belong to a different session, or expose the host to unwanted players.

How to join with the PIN, link, or QR code
- Ask the host for the current PIN or the link or QR code for the live session.
- Open kahoot.it in a browser, or open the Kahoot! app and choose Join.
- Enter the PIN if you are using the code. If you use the link or scan the QR code, follow the prompts instead.
- Complete any requested identifier, nickname, or verification step to enter the game.
A link or QR code saves you from manually entering the PIN, but it does not bypass host-enabled security checks such as 2-Step Join. See Kahoot!’s joining instructions for the available routes.

When a live PIN expires
Kahoot! says a live PIN expires when the live game ends. Its current help guidance also gives live PINs and QR codes a validity window of up to 8 hours. Treat that as an outside validity window, not a promise that a code will work for eight hours: if the host ends or replaces the session, the earlier code may stop working sooner. The host’s active session is the source of truth.
If the host restarts the game, ask for the code displayed for the new session rather than relying on an earlier PIN.

Live PINs and assignment PINs are different
A live game takes place in real time, and its PIN is linked to that session. A self-paced assignment has a separate PIN that remains valid until the deadline set by its host. If you were invited to complete an assignment, check its deadline rather than treating its code like a live-game PIN. Kahoot! describes the distinction in its PIN guidance and assignment instructions.

What to check if the PIN doesn’t work
- Check the digits. Re-enter the code carefully, or try the host’s current join link or QR code.
- Confirm the code is current. Ask the host to compare what you entered with the PIN currently displayed on their screen.
- Check the session. Find out whether the game ended, was restarted, or was replaced. A PIN from an earlier session may no longer work.
- Ask whether joining is locked. The host may have stopped new participants from entering.
- Check the activity type. For an assignment, confirm that its host-set deadline has not passed.
- Check your connection. If the host confirms that the session is active and the PIN is correct, follow Kahoot!’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
Switching to a link or QR code can avoid a typing mistake, but it will not override a join lock or required verification.

If you’re hosting the game
- Sign in, open the kahoot, and choose Host live.
- Select the game mode and settings, then start the session.
- Share the PIN displayed on the host screen, or provide the session’s join link or QR code to the intended participants.
Share access directly with your players. Kahoot! advises hosts against posting PINs publicly because unwanted players or bots may join.
