What Happens After You Enter a URL? HTTP’s Seven Decisions

HTTP is more than a request arrow. See how target, method, fields, conditions, transport, status, and client behavior shape a browser-to-server exchange.

When you enter a URL and press Enter, HTTP is not simply an arrow that fetches a page. It is a request-and-response protocol in which the client and server resolve several questions: which resource is involved, what action is intended, what context applies, how the message is carried, and what to do with the result. The seven decisions below are a practical mental model—not an official IETF taxonomy—and they may be implicit, delegated to intermediaries, or repeated along the way.

1. Which resource is the target?

The client directs a request toward a target resource identified through the URL and request context. The request is routed toward an origin server, but it need not travel directly: intermediaries can receive and forward it. The URL identifies the destination of the request; it does not, by itself, say what the client wants done there.

2. What action is intended?

The HTTP method is the primary source of request semantics: it communicates the request’s purpose and the kind of successful result the client expects. That is why HTTP requests should not all be described as “getting a page.” A request might ask for a representation, submit information for processing, or express a desired resource state. Method definitions and their semantics are set out in RFC 9110, HTTP Semantics.

3. What context accompanies the request?

Request fields—commonly called headers—can carry control data, resource metadata, sender information, and other context. A request may also have content, but its purpose depends on the method. With PUT, a representation expresses the desired state of the target resource; with POST, content is information the target resource can process. Content does not mean the same thing in every request.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

4. Which representation or conditions apply?

Preferences for a representation

Accept-family fields can tell the server what kinds of representation the client can use or prefers. Those preferences may influence the server’s choice; they do not guarantee that a particular format will be returned.

Conditions on the action

Conditional fields make a request depend on the resource’s current state. They can let a client validate a cached response or protect a state-changing operation from overwriting a change made in the meantime. In that way, conditions can support cache updates and help prevent lost updates—not merely alter how a response looks.

5. How is the message conveyed?

HTTP’s semantics are shared across versions, but the versions do not put messages on the wire in the same way. HTTP/1.1 defines its own message syntax, framing, and connection management in RFC 9112. HTTP/2 uses multiplexing over TLS and TCP, while HTTP/3 uses QUIC over UDP; RFC 9114 specifies HTTP/3. These are differences in conveying and transporting HTTP, not different meanings for core methods and status codes. None of these distinctions alone establishes that one version is always faster or better.

6. What did the server report?

The response status describes the result and its response semantics. The first digit groups status codes into five classes:

  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
  • 1xx: informational
  • 2xx: successful
  • 3xx: redirection
  • 4xx: client error
  • 5xx: server error

A client can receive an interim 1xx response before the final response. A status code therefore needs to be read in context rather than treated as the whole exchange.

7. What happens next?

The client interprets the status, response fields, and any content together. Depending on the result, it might display a representation, follow a redirect, reuse or validate a cached response, or report an error. The meaning of response content depends on the request method, the status, and the response fields: a 200 response to GET and a 200 response to POST need not mean the same thing.

Why the seven-decision model helps

HTTP is a stateless, application-level request/response protocol. In RFC 9112 §1, the IETF describes it as “a stateless application-level request/response protocol that uses extensible semantics and self-descriptive messages for flexible interaction with network-based hypertext information systems.” Statelessness does not mean an exchange has no context: methods and fields can carry context, and clients and intermediaries can retain or validate cached responses. It means the protocol’s request/response model does not make each message depend on a built-in conversational state carried forward from the preceding one.

The seven questions are useful because they separate decisions that are easy to blur together: the target is not the action; the action is not the wire format; and a response status is not, by itself, a complete instruction for what a browser should show or do. In real exchanges these are not necessarily seven sequential pauses. Some are implicit, delegated, negotiated, or repeated across intermediary hops.

Optional background reading

HTTP: The Definitive Guide, by David Gourley, Brian Totty, Marjorie Sayer, Anshu Aggarwal, and Sailu Reddy, was published in September 2002. O’Reilly describes coverage of methods, headers, status codes, proxies, caches, authentication, negotiation, and redirection. Its age matters: treat it as optional background on HTTP and web architecture, and use the current RFCs for normative details and HTTP/2 or HTTP/3. The publisher’s catalog page identifies the book.
