Yes—video face swap can work when a person turns their head, especially during a partial turn. It is less reliable in a full profile, when fewer facial features are visible to track. If by “sideways” you mean the entire video frame is rotated 90 degrees, that is a different issue: rotate the clip upright or check whether your tool accepts rotated footage.
Why a head turn makes face swapping harder
A face is not a flat image that can simply be laid over another one. As it turns, the visible shape and perspective change, and features such as one eye or part of the cheek may disappear from view. Software has less visible information to follow, while blur, fast movement, hair or hands over the face, and uneven lighting can make tracking and blending more difficult.

Google’s MediaPipe Face Landmarker guide describes a task that detects face landmarks and expressions in images and video. Google’s ML Kit face-detection documentation explains face orientation and how detectable landmarks vary with yaw. These technical capabilities help explain why a profile is harder to process; they do not guarantee that any particular face-swap tool will produce a convincing result.

What to expect at different angles
- Partial turn: More promising when both eyes and most of the face remain visible. The swap may still soften around the edges or distort the cheek or eye.
- Full profile: Less reliable because more features are hidden. The replacement may flicker, slide, or briefly disappear.
- Fast turn or blurred footage: Harder to track consistently from frame to frame.
- Occlusion or changing light: Hair, a hand, or strong changes in lighting can interfere with a natural-looking blend.
These are reported failure modes, not measured success rates. There is no established universal angle threshold or independent controlled benchmark showing when sideways face swaps succeed.

How to test a sideways turn before processing the full video
- Clarify what “sideways” means. If the person turns their head in an upright clip, assess the turn itself. If the whole frame is rotated, correct the orientation first or check the tool’s input handling.
- Prepare clear footage. Use a sharp reference image and source clip, with the face large enough to retain detail. Even, soft lighting can help; use the original, less-compressed footage when possible.
- Render a short test segment. Include the most difficult turn rather than testing only a straight-on shot. A short sample can reveal problems before you process the entire clip.
- Inspect adjacent frames. Check the eyes, cheek, jaw, and face boundary for flicker, sliding, softness, or a momentary loss of the replacement.
- Adjust expectations to the footage. Partial turns are generally more promising than full profiles. Test the actual clip before assuming the result will hold through a quick, blurred, obstructed, or strongly lit turn.
What the processing stages can—and cannot—tell you
A vendor overview of video face swapping describes a typical pipeline of detection, tracking, alignment, and blending. That helps explain why a turn can affect more than the initial detection: the system must follow the face and blend the replacement as its visible shape changes. No fair comparative test of named tools establishes which one performs best on sideways turns. Results depend on the angle, visible features, motion, lighting, face size, image quality, and stability across frames. Treat a short test of your own footage as more useful than assuming a tool will manage every profile equally well.
