The thresholds below reflect official PlayStation, Steam and Nintendo guidance available in October 2026. Policies and account screens can change, so confirm the current terms for your country immediately before submitting a request.

Find out who must issue the refund
Open the purchase receipt, email confirmation or account order history. The name that charged you is normally the party that must cancel the preorder or return the money.
Digital purchase made in a platform store
Use that platform’s account support or refund workflow. A PlayStation Store, Steam or Nintendo eShop transaction is not normally handled by the game publisher or by a different console company. The publisher may be able to explain a technical fault, but it is usually not the seller that can reverse the store transaction.

Preorder code bought from another retailer
Contact the retailer that sold the code. PlayStation specifically says it does not process refunds for voucher codes purchased elsewhere. The retailer’s cancellation and digital-code terms control the request. Have the retailer receipt ready, even if the code has not yet been redeemed.
Physical preorder
Contact the shop shown on the receipt. Ask whether the order can be canceled before dispatch and whether its deposit or payment is refundable. Physical-retailer policies differ, and no single console policy replaces them. If a physical order has already shipped, ask about the store’s return process rather than using a digital-game refund form.
Check these conditions before you click “request refund”
- Deadline: Note the preorder date, scheduled release date and any platform-specific window. Save the dates in one place because “14 days before release,” “14 days after purchase” and “two weeks after release” are different clocks.
- Payment state: Determine whether the seller has only authorized payment or has captured it. Nintendo’s US eShop FAQ, for example, describes cancellation before payment is processed, while its broader digital-products policy says payments are generally final. A pending authorization is not the same thing as a completed refund.
- Download state: Check whether the main game has downloaded, preloaded or begun streaming. Do not assume that deleting the files restores eligibility. A policy can focus on whether delivery started, not whether files remain on the console.
- Play or access state: Steam applies a playtime limit after release, and some other policies treat starting access as consent to digital delivery. Opening a title to test it can therefore matter even if you decide immediately that you do not want it.
- Country: A US rule may not apply in the UK or elsewhere. Mandatory local consumer protections can supplement a platform’s own policy.
- Product type: Distinguish a digital preorder, a physical pre-purchase, a gift, a voucher code and an Advanced Access purchase. Similar-looking orders can have different support routes.
If a platform’s rule depends on the game not starting to download, disable automatic downloads or preloads while you decide. Consoles can begin a scheduled download without a new manual purchase action. Check both the console setting and the game’s store-page release or preload setting.

Write down four dates: when you placed the preorder, when payment was captured (if different), the advertised release date and the date you submit the request. Then record whether the main content has downloaded, streamed or been played. This simple timeline prevents a common mistake: applying a release-based deadline to a purchase-based rule, or vice versa.
For example, a PlayStation US preorder paid more than 14 days before release must be requested before release. A preorder paid less than 14 days before release instead uses a 14-day period measured from purchase. Steam uses an anytime-before-release rule and then a two-week-from-release rule, with less than two hours played. Nintendo’s US FAQ refers to cancellation before payment is processed and preloading, up to seven days before release, while its general digital policy says payments are final unless an exception or law applies.

PlayStation Store: United States
Preorder paid more than 14 days before release
Under the US PlayStation support guidance, submit the request before the release date. The main game must not have been downloaded or preloaded. If the preorder included bonus content that was available immediately, canceling the preorder stops that bonus content from working; the condition is that the main preorder content had not begun downloading.

Preorder paid less than 14 days before release
Submit the request within 14 days of the purchase date, and keep the main content completely undownloaded and unpreloaded. The 14-day period is measured from purchase for this category, not from the release date.
Voucher purchased outside PlayStation Store
Take the request to the retailer that sold the voucher. PlayStation does not handle those third-party code refunds.

What if the US rule rejects the request?
Check the account’s country and the current local policy. PlayStation’s US page expressly notes that applicable local law may provide additional rights, so a platform refusal is not automatically the end of every legal remedy.
PlayStation Store: United Kingdom example
The UK cancellation terms use a similar timing split but add streaming explicitly. If payment was made more than 14 days before release, cancellation is allowed before release only while the main digital content has not begun downloading or streaming. If payment was made 14 days or less before release, the request can be made up to 14 days after payment, subject to the same no-download and no-stream condition.

Steam: canceling a PC preorder
Before release
Steam says a preorder can be refunded at any time before the game releases. Submit the request through Steam Support while the product is still unreleased. This is one of the clearest pre-release rules, but you still need to use the account that placed the order and identify the correct transaction.
After release
Once the game is released, Steam’s stated preorder rule allows a request submitted within two weeks of release when the game has been played for less than two hours. The two-hour condition concerns playtime, not merely the size of a download, but do not launch the game while you are deciding if you want to preserve eligibility. A preload by itself is not the same fact as recorded playtime, although other sellers may treat preload differently.
Preorders bought more than six months ago
Steam notes that a refund to the original payment method may not be available when the preorder was purchased more than six months earlier. You may still be able to request Steam Wallet credit. Ask the support form what destination is available rather than assuming the original card or wallet will always be used.

Advanced Access
Advanced Access changes the practical starting point. A request can be made before Advanced Access begins, and the standard 14-day period starts on the game’s release date. Check the product’s exact release and Advanced Access labels rather than assuming the first playable hour is the official release. If you are unsure, preserve the safest status by not launching the title and ask Steam to confirm how the order is categorized.
Gift preorders
For a gift preorder, the recipient must initiate and approve removal of the gift before the purchaser submits the refund request. Ask the recipient to complete that step first, then submit the order through the purchaser’s account. Explain in the case that the gift has been removed so the agent can match the two account actions.
Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store: United States
Digital eShop pre-purchases
Nintendo’s US digital-products policy says Nintendo Account payments, including pre-purchases, are final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one. Treat a request as an exception, not as an automatic entitlement.

A separate Nintendo Support FAQ says an eShop preorder can be canceled before payment is processed and the game is preloaded, up to seven days before release. That wording describes when cancellation may be possible; it does not promise that a payment already collected will be returned. Compare the FAQ with the payment status shown in your account before relying on it.
Physical pre-purchases from Nintendo Store
Nintendo says a physical pre-purchase is charged immediately. Request cancellation by contacting Nintendo Support, then follow the store’s instructions for shipment or return. Do not assume the eShop timing applies to a physical order. Keep the order number and any dispatch notice because support may need to distinguish an unshipped cancellation from a post-shipment return.
Xbox: verify the current policy first
An official Xbox Support refund page exists, but the policy details were not readable in the available support response. Because a specific preorder deadline, playtime limit or download rule cannot be confirmed here, open the current Xbox Support digital-game refund page, sign in, and read the terms shown for your account’s country before submitting. Do not rely on a threshold copied from another platform. If the page offers an automated request form, save the confirmation and the terms displayed during submission.
How to submit the request
- Stop further access. Do not launch, stream or preload the game if the applicable policy requires no access. Turn off automatic downloads where necessary.
- Collect the order record. Write down the order number, purchase date, title, edition, platform, account email or ID, scheduled release date and payment method. Note whether payment is pending or captured.
- Use the official support route. Open the seller’s signed-in help page or refund form, select the matching order and choose the preorder or digital-purchase reason. For a retailer code or physical item, use that retailer’s support channel instead.
- State the facts briefly. Explain when you bought it, whether payment was captured, whether any download, stream or play occurred, and which policy window you believe applies.
- Request the desired destination. Ask for repayment to the original payment method where available. If the platform offers only account credit under its terms, decide whether that outcome is acceptable before confirming.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the case number, transcript, email and submission time. Do not submit contradictory requests through multiple channels unless support instructs you to do so.
Suggested message
“Please cancel order [order number] for [game title], purchased on [date] for [platform/account]. The game has [not been downloaded, preloaded, streamed or played / the following access occurred: …]. I am requesting a refund under the preorder policy applicable to my country. Please confirm the case number and refund destination.”
Keep variable text such as the order number inside the message you send; do not guess or omit it. If access did occur, describe it accurately instead of using the “no access” wording.

- Original receipt and the order-history screenshot.
- Release date shown on the product page when timing is disputed.
- Console or launcher status showing whether the main content downloaded or was played.
- Payment statement showing the seller and whether the charge is pending or completed.
- Any prior support case number and the exact response.
- For a retailer code, the retailer invoice and evidence that the code was not redeemed, if applicable.
Describe facts accurately. Claiming that a game was never played when the account shows hours of play can delay or end the review. Do not alter screenshots or delete account records; preserve the original order and status information.
If the request is refused
Recheck the policy category
Confirm that you used the rule for the correct country, purchase channel and product type. A voucher, physical order, eShop pre-purchase and Steam Advanced Access purchase can follow different paths. Check whether the request missed a date window or whether an automatic preload changed the download state.
Ask for a written explanation
Reply through the same case and ask which condition caused the refusal. A precise explanation lets you correct an account or timing error without starting a new dispute. Quote the order number and the date of the original request so the follow-up stays attached to the same transaction.
Consider local consumer rights
Platform terms are not a substitute for mandatory consumer protections. If your country gives cancellation, faulty-content or digital-delivery rights, contact the relevant consumer-protection service or seek qualified local advice. The US PlayStation guidance expressly recognizes that local law may add rights. The UK terms described above are a regional policy example, not a universal rule.

Do not begin with a bank chargeback
The platform guidance directs customers to the seller’s support process and does not establish that a chargeback is an appropriate substitute for a valid refund request. A bank dispute can suspend an account or complicate support, so use it only after understanding your payment provider’s rules and the legal basis for the dispute.

“Does deleting a preload make me eligible again?”
Not necessarily. The cited PlayStation rules focus on whether the main content was downloaded or preloaded, and the UK wording also addresses streaming. Deleting files after delivery has begun does not change that history. Ask support to assess the order under the rule for your country instead of assuming deletion resets the clock.
“What if my payment is still pending?”
Check the seller’s cancellation instructions for an authorization versus a captured payment. Nintendo’s US FAQ specifically refers to cancellation before payment is processed, while its broader policy treats digital payments as generally final. Tell support exactly what your account and payment statement show; do not describe a pending authorization as a completed refund.
“Can I request a different refund destination?”
Ask whether the seller can return funds to the original payment method. Steam notes that older preorders may not qualify for that destination but may still qualify for Steam Wallet credit. Other platforms may present different choices, so read the destination shown in the official support flow before accepting it.

“What if I bought the preorder as a gift?”

No assumption is safe. Verify the current official Xbox Support refund page for your account’s country. A specific Xbox preorder deadline, playtime limit or download condition should not be copied from another platform.
