How to Get a Refund for a Buggy or Unfinished Digital Game

Start with the storefront that processed your payment. A developer usually cannot reverse a store transaction. Describe the defect precisely, show that the game is unusable or materially different from its description, and attach your receipt, timing details, screenshots, recordings, and error information. Steam and Epic commonly use a 14-day and under-two-hours baseline for eligible PC purchases; PlayStation’s ordinary checklist generally requires no download or streaming and a request within 14 days; Nintendo US treats digital payments as final unless Nintendo or applicable law provides an exception. Those are platform policies, not universal legal limits. A faulty-content claim outside a normal window may still be worth escalating, depending on the store and the law governing your transaction.

Who should receive the refund request?

Send the request to the company that took the payment. If you bought through Steam, use Steam Support. If you paid through the Epic Games Store, use Epic’s transaction or support flow. A purchase billed by a console or mobile store must be handled by that store, even when the game was made by a different company.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This distinction matters because a developer may be able to fix a bug but generally cannot authorize a payment reversal on another company’s checkout system. Keep any developer correspondence as evidence, but do not substitute it for a storefront refund request.

Build your evidence before opening a case

A support agent needs to identify the transaction, reproduce the failure, and distinguish a genuine defect from a change-of-mind request. Gather the following before submitting the form:

#1 Best Overall
GameStop Physical Gift Card
  • Redeemable at US GameStop, EB Games, Babbage's, Electronic Boutique, EBX, Planet X, and Software Etc. stores. Also redeemable online at and GameStop.com and EBGames.com.
  • Over 6,100 stores located throughout the United States.
  • GameStop. Power to the Players.
  • Redemption: Instore and Online
  • No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
  • Purchase proof: order confirmation, receipt, transaction ID, purchase date, account email, and the store name.
  • System details: device or console model, operating-system version, game version, and whether the title was downloaded, streamed, preloaded, or launched from a subscription.
  • Reproduction steps: the exact menu, mission, opening sequence, server connection, or action that causes the failure.
  • Visible evidence: screenshots, a short screen recording, crash code, error text, or an attached log when the support form permits it.
  • Promised-versus-actual comparison: identify the feature, playable state, language, mode, or access condition represented at purchase and explain what you actually received.
  • Timeline: purchase date, first launch, first failure, troubleshooting attempted, and dates of prior contacts with support.
  • Usage facts: recorded playtime, whether the content was downloaded or streamed, and whether a preorder had already released.

Keep copies of every submission and response. A concise record is more persuasive than a long accusation. State what happens, when it happens, and why that prevents normal use.

Platform rules at a glance

Storefront Ordinary policy baseline Download, streaming, or playtime condition Faulty-content route Where to escalate
Steam Request within 14 days for games Usually under two hours of playtime Steam says consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights when a game is faulty Steam Help purchase page, then Steam Support review
Epic Games Store Eligible PC and Mac products generally within 14 days of purchase; eligible pre-purchases generally within 14 days after release Recorded runtime generally under two hours; products are marked self-refundable, refundable, or non-refundable Use the eligible-product process and explain the defect; regional rights may also apply Transactions area for self-refundable purchases; Epic support for other eligible requests
PlayStation Store Ordinary games and DLC checklist generally requires a request within 14 days Content generally must not have been downloaded or streamed Support guidance separately recognizes possible local-law rights when content is faulty PlayStation refund assistant or support flow; identify the content as faulty when that is the reason
Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Account services (US policy) Payments are generally final and non-refundable No Steam-style automatic window is promised Refund requires Nintendo authorization or an exception required by applicable law Nintendo support, with a specific defect explanation
Google Play in the EEA and UK Outcome depends on the product and timing Digital content may be delivered immediately after the buyer acknowledges that automatic statutory withdrawal rights are waived Apply the regional digital-content rules and explain the fault Google Play’s purchase support flow for the relevant transaction

The conditions in this table are policy descriptions, not guarantees. A store can classify a transaction differently based on the account, product, territory, payment route, or local consumer law.

Steam: use the 14-day/two-hour rule as a baseline, not a hard answer to every defect

Steam says it will refund nearly any purchase when the request is made through Steam Support within the required return period. For games, the familiar baseline is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. That rule is the simplest path for a newly purchased title that immediately crashes, fails to launch, or is otherwise unusable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that exceeding either figure automatically ends the discussion. Steam also says consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional refund rights when a game is faulty. If a serious defect became apparent only after a longer installation, a required update, or a particular progression point, explain that chronology rather than hiding the playtime.

How to submit a Steam request

  1. Open Steam Help and select the purchase from your account history.
  2. Choose the refund option shown for that transaction.
  3. Select the reason that most closely matches the actual problem, then describe the reproducible failure in the text field.
  4. Include the purchase date, playtime, device, game version, error text, and any evidence the form accepts.
  5. If the automated decision rejects the request, open a Steam Support ticket for human review and repeat the defect evidence without changing the facts.

Epic Games Store: check the product’s refund label

Epic’s current policy generally allows eligible PC and Mac products to be refunded within 14 days of purchase when recorded runtime is under two hours. For eligible pre-purchases, the 14-day period generally starts after release. Epic labels products as self-refundable, refundable, or non-refundable, so the label attached to the transaction affects which path appears.

  • PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.

For a self-refundable purchase, use the Transactions area of your account. Other eligible requests go through Epic support. A purchase made through a console store or another mobile store is outside Epic’s refund system; Epic states that those requests must be sent to the store that processed the payment.

How to submit an Epic request

  1. Open your Epic account’s Transactions area and locate the game.
  2. Check whether the transaction is marked self-refundable, refundable, or non-refundable.
  3. Use the self-service refund control when it is available; otherwise open an Epic support request.
  4. State whether the game fails to launch, crashes at a repeatable point, omits a represented feature, or is inaccessible after purchase.
  5. Attach the receipt, transaction ID, runtime, release or preorder timing, error evidence, and troubleshooting steps.

PlayStation Store: separate the ordinary checklist from a faulty-content claim

PlayStation’s ordinary games-and-DLC process generally requires two conditions: the request must be made within 14 days of purchase, and the content must not have been downloaded or streamed. That checklist is aimed at a standard cancellation request. It does not by itself answer every case in which downloaded content is defective.

The support guidance separately notes that local law may provide additional rights, including situations in which digital content is faulty. If the game crashes, cannot access the advertised mode, or is materially different from its description, identify the request as a faulty-content issue and explain why the ordinary “I changed my mind” category does not describe your situation.

How to submit a PlayStation request

  1. Open the PlayStation refund assistant or the support flow for your account region.
  2. Identify the exact game, edition, add-on, or preorder and provide the purchase date.
  3. Explain whether the content was downloaded or streamed, and give the date and time of the failure.
  4. Use the words “faulty digital content” when that is accurate, then describe the specific defect and its effect on play.
  5. Provide screenshots, video, error codes, and the steps already attempted.

Do not claim that every downloaded game qualifies for a refund. Explain the defect and ask the support team to assess it under the applicable faulty-content policy and local rights.

Nintendo eShop: expect an exception-based review

Nintendo US states that payments through Nintendo Account services, including digital products, pre-purchases, and subscriptions, are final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. This is comparatively restrictive: there is no promise of an automatic, Steam-style return period for a digital game.

Use Nintendo support and present the case as a specific defect. Include the transaction record, purchase and release dates, device, game version, exact failure, and evidence. A support agent may ask for troubleshooting details or account information. Be accurate about downloads and playtime; omitting those facts can undermine credibility if the account record shows them.

Google Play and regional digital-content rules

Google’s EEA and UK guidance explains that refund outcomes for apps, games, and in-app purchases depend on the product and the timing of the request. It also warns that digital content can be made available immediately after the buyer acknowledges that automatic statutory withdrawal rights are waived. Consequently, a mobile-store request cannot be evaluated using a PC storefront’s 14-day/two-hour formula.

Choose the transaction in Google Play’s purchase support flow and describe the defect, not merely dissatisfaction with the game’s design. Identify the country or region of the account, the purchase date, whether an in-app purchase is involved, and when the faulty behavior began. If a local rule may apply, ask the support team to review the transaction under that rule rather than asserting a universal entitlement.

Write a request that makes the defect easy to verify

Support teams process many vague complaints. A short, factual structure gives them the information needed to decide:

  1. Identify the transaction: “I purchased [game] on [date] through [store]. The transaction ID is [ID].”
  2. Name the defect: “The game crashes at the opening sequence every time,” or “The advertised multiplayer mode is unavailable after installation.”
  3. Explain the consequence: “I cannot reach the title screen,” “I cannot complete the first mission,” or “The purchased edition does not contain the represented feature.”
  4. Give the timeline: state the first launch, first failure, relevant update, and troubleshooting attempted.
  5. List evidence: receipt, screenshots, recording, error log, and any developer or support case number.
  6. Make the request: ask for a refund review under the store’s faulty-content policy and any consumer rights that apply to the transaction.

A usable template is: “I’m requesting a refund because the digital game is materially faulty and not usable as described. I purchased it on [date] through [store]. The problem is [specific reproducible defect]. I have attached [receipt, screenshots, video, error log]. Please review this under your faulty-content policy and any consumer rights that apply to this transaction.”

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
  • Redemption: Online

Avoid labels such as “scam” unless an authorized authority has made that finding. “The game crashes at the opening sequence” is verifiable; “the publisher stole my money” is an accusation that does not help an agent reproduce the fault.

What to do when an automated form rejects the request

An automated rejection may reflect a standard eligibility rule rather than a finding that the game works correctly. Use the same storefront’s support-ticket route and request human review.

  1. Copy the original transaction details and defect description into the ticket.
  2. Explain which ordinary condition caused the automated rejection, such as playtime, download status, or elapsed days.
  3. Explain why the case is different: identify the fault, when it became apparent, and why the game is unusable or materially misdescribed.
  4. Attach evidence in a format the support system accepts and keep the case number.
  5. Reply to follow-up questions directly; do not open multiple contradictory cases.

If the second review still refuses the refund, ask the store to state the reason and the policy category used. That record can help you decide whether a consumer-protection complaint or legal-aid consultation is appropriate.

Understand the role of local consumer law

Store rules are not the complete legal position. Rights depend on the country, state, or other jurisdiction governing the transaction, the seller, the product type, and the facts. A faulty digital game may receive protections that do not apply to a simple change-of-mind request, but no single rule covers every buyer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before making a legal claim, identify the billing country, the account region, the seller named on the receipt, and the date of purchase. Then consult the relevant consumer-protection authority or a qualified legal-aid resource for that jurisdiction. Do not describe a jurisdiction-specific remedy as a worldwide guarantee.

Payment disputes are a last resort, not a risk-free shortcut

If the storefront and a human support review both refuse the request, a payment dispute may be available through your card issuer or payment provider, but it can have account consequences. A dispute can lead to restrictions, loss of access, or additional investigation, and it does not replace the store’s support process.

Keep the receipt, support correspondence, evidence, and the refusal reason. Ask the payment provider about its rules before filing. Describe the transaction accurately and do not claim unauthorized use when you authorized the purchase but received defective content.

Common mistakes that weaken a refund case

  • Contacting only the developer: the developer may acknowledge a bug, but the payment storefront normally controls the refund.
  • Using the wrong reason: a faulty-content request should not be submitted as a casual change-of-mind cancellation.
  • Hiding usage facts: disclose playtime, download, streaming, preload, and release information.
  • Making broad accusations: use reproducible facts instead of claims you cannot prove.
  • Sending no transaction proof: support cannot reliably locate an order without the receipt or transaction ID.
  • Ignoring region: policies and statutory rights can change by country or account region.
  • Opening conflicting cases: inconsistent descriptions make a genuine defect harder to evaluate.
  • Assuming every unfinished game is refundable: an early-access label, missing roadmap feature, or disliked design is not automatically the same as a technical fault or legal defect.

Practical decision checklist

Use this sequence before submitting:

  1. Confirm which storefront charged you.
  2. Record the purchase date, transaction ID, account region, device, edition, and game version.
  3. Check the storefront’s ordinary deadline and its playtime, download, or streaming condition.
  4. Capture the exact error and a short reproduction path.
  5. Compare the purchased description with the actual missing, inaccessible, or broken feature.
  6. Submit through the storefront’s self-service route when available.
  7. If rejected, open a human-review ticket through that same storefront and identify the case as faulty content when accurate.
  8. If the final refusal remains unexplained or appears inconsistent with applicable local law, consult the relevant consumer authority or legal-aid resource before considering a payment dispute.

What outcome should you expect?

The strongest cases are easy to verify: the correct store, a traceable transaction, a repeatable defect, evidence showing the failure, and a request made within the ordinary policy window. Cases outside that window are not automatically hopeless, but the result depends on the platform’s discretion and the law governing the purchase. A precise record gives you the best chance of a fair review without overstating what the store or the law guarantees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Request the refund from the storefront that processed payment, document the specific defect and timeline, and ask for human review when an automated rule rejects the case. Steam and Epic’s 14-day/under-two-hours rules are baselines; PlayStation’s ordinary rule centers on 14 days and no download or streaming; Nintendo US generally requires an exception. Local law may add rights, but only for the jurisdiction that governs your transaction.
