In ordinary Survival gameplay, player heads do not drop, so you cannot simply mine or defeat your way to one. You get a player head through Creative mode, the pick-block function, or the /give command. On Java Edition, you can also use /give to create a head that displays a specific player’s skin. Bedrock Edition has a player-head item and supports /give, but the sources reviewed do not document a way to apply a named player’s skin to that item.
Why a player head is not a Survival drop
Minecraft’s item reference for the Player Head lists three routes for obtaining one: the Creative inventory, pick block, and the /give command. No natural drop from ordinary Survival play is documented. If you want a head in a survival world, you either need command access or a server operator who can give you one.

Check that you have command access first
Every route that involves commands depends on permissions, and the rules differ by edition and by whether you are playing alone or on a server.
- Java single-player: enable the Allow Commands setting in the world’s options. It is set when the world is created.
- Bedrock single-player: enable Allow Cheats in the world settings.
- Multiplayer (either edition): you need a high enough permission level, and the server operator controls that. Minecraft’s official commands guide puts it this way: “In multiplayer, you’ll need to have a high-enough permission level to be able to use commands.”
Java Edition: give yourself a head that shows a named player’s skin
Java Edition uses the profile component on the player-head item. This is the syntax the Minecraft Wiki’s Player Head article gives for the current version line, but it is version-sensitive.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
- Confirm you are running Java Edition and that command access is enabled, as described above.
- Open the chat window and run the command below. Replace
PlayerNamewith the account name whose skin you want, and leave the rest of the line unchanged.@stargets you, the player who runs the command.
/give @s minecraft:player_head[minecraft:profile=PlayerName] - Check the head in your inventory. It should display the skin of the named account.
If the command returns an error, first check the exact game version you are running, then use the in-game command suggestions to confirm the syntax. Do not switch to the older SkullOwner NBT form unless you have verified that it works in your version. The Player Head article notes that Java item data changed in 1.20.5, and that the profile data was adjusted in 1.21.9, so commands written for earlier versions may not work on newer ones.
Bedrock Edition: use the player-head item, not the Java profile syntax
Bedrock has a player-head item, and Microsoft Learn’s give command reference gives this general form:
Rank #2

- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.

/give <player> <itemName> [amount] [data] [components]
The command requires cheats to be enabled. The sources reviewed do not document a way to apply a named player’s skin to a Bedrock player head. A third-party custom-head catalogue states that custom player textures do not work in Bedrock, so do not use the Java minecraft:profile syntax on Bedrock.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEnabling cheats in a Bedrock single-player world has a permanent consequence: Minecraft’s official guide says achievements are permanently disabled in that world, even if you turn cheats back off later. If you care about achievements in a particular world, use a separate world for testing or for head collecting.

Which route fits your situation
| Situation | What works | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Java single-player | Enable Allow Commands, then run /give with the minecraft:profile component to show a named skin. |
Command syntax depends on the game version. Check the in-game suggestions if it fails. |
| Bedrock single-player | /give works for the player-head item when cheats are enabled. |
Enabling cheats permanently disables achievements in that world. Named player skins are not documented for Bedrock. |
| Multiplayer, either edition | Commands work if your permission level allows them. | Ask the server operator to grant access or to give you the head. |
| Ordinary Survival | Creative inventory, pick block, or commands are the documented routes. | No natural drop is documented, so you must have one of those methods available. |
When the head shows the wrong skin or no skin
The Player Head article says the head stores its skin when it is created and may need an internet connection to load it. Your game also keeps a local skin cache, so an updated or unloaded skin may take time to appear. If a head shows a default or blank skin, reconnect to the internet, reopen the world or server, and check the head again. Creating a new head is the reliable fix if the stored skin is the problem.
Source note: the skin-loading and cache behaviour comes from the Minecraft Wiki’s community-maintained reference, not from testing on a specific device, so results may vary.
Rank #4
