DecisionPrint is a decision-memory workflow for architecture teams. Its core job is to answer “Why did we do this?” by recovering the constraints and evidence behind an earlier choice, comparing those original premises with current conditions, and following the decision into implementation and outcomes. It is a design described by its author in a first-person account, not a product with published validation or measured business impact, so this article evaluates it as a workflow and nothing more.
The questions the workflow is built to answer
DecisionPrint organizes its record around five questions a reviewer tends to ask about a past architecture decision:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- What did we decide?
- What assumptions supported that decision?
- What evidence supports the original reasoning?
- Which assumptions have changed?
- What happened after the decision?
The first two questions concern the decision record itself. The third is answered by evidence links. The last two depend on comparing the record with present conditions and tracing what followed. The sections below follow that order.
What a decision record holds
The central claim is that a decision is more than its final label. A record that keeps only “we chose X” cannot tell a later reader whether X still makes sense. DecisionPrint therefore keeps the constraints that informed the choice alongside the choice itself.

The decision and its premises
Each record pairs the decision with the premises it rested on, such as the scale of a system, the consumer pattern, or a operational requirement at the time. Those premises are what later get compared with current conditions. Without them, a decision can only be argued about, not checked.
Evidence references
According to the author’s account, an evidence reference opens the underlying architectural excerpt together with its recorded date. The date matters: it shows whether the artifact predates a change in premises. A link establishes that the excerpt exists and what it says. It does not establish that the interpretation drawn from it is correct, so a reviewer still has to read the excerpt and judge the reasoning.
Premise drift
Premise drift is the gap between the conditions recorded when a decision was made and the conditions that hold now. The interface displays this gap with drift gauges, so a team can see at a glance which premises have moved. A changed premise does not mean the old decision was wrong. It means the old answer needs to be re-examined before it is reused.

The outcome chain
The outcome chain links a decision to the implementation that followed, the system change it produced, any incident, and the postmortem. The purpose is to make the sequence of events visible from a single starting point, so that a team asking what followed a decision does not have to reconstruct the chain from scattered tickets and commit messages.
Worked example: a Kafka rejection revisited
The author’s illustrative example involves an earlier decision to reject Kafka in a context with a small number of consumers and no replay requirement. The later context involves more consumers and a replay requirement. The exact consumer counts are not stated in the account, and the author does not record a new decision. The value of the example is that the premises are side by side, so a reviewer can see which ones moved.
| Premise | Original context | Later context |
|---|---|---|
| Consumers | Small number of consumers (exact count not stated) | More consumers (exact count not stated) |
| Replay | No replay requirement | Replay requirement present |
| Decision | Kafka rejected | Not recorded in the account; the original rejection holds only if the original premises still hold |
Following a decision into failure: the backup example
The account also gives an example that runs through the full outcome chain. It is supplied by the author as an illustration of how the linkage works, not as a verified case.

- Decision: remove automated database backups, recorded with the premises that supported it.
- Implementation and system change: the change that carried out the decision, linked back to it.
- Incident: database corruption, linked to the change.
- Postmortem: the review of the incident, linked to the chain.
The chain shows which events are connected in the record. It does not prove that removing backups caused the corruption; the system records linkage, and establishing cause requires the postmortem’s own analysis.

The author describes an architecture in which the frontend never reaches directly into vector indexes or model prompts. Its boundary is a typed FacadeProtocol. The interface asks for decision, evidence, timeline, and outcome data, while the backend owns memory retention and recall.
A typed facade between the UI and memory
The facade allows the interface to run against either a deterministic local backend or a Hindsight-backed memory engine. Because the UI depends only on the protocol, the backend can be changed without rewriting the presentation layer. The author reports this as a design choice. No comparative engineering study of the approach is available, so its benefits remain a matter of the author’s reasoning.

Streamlit and generated SVG
The application is built with Streamlit. Rather than adopting a large JavaScript visualization stack, the author generates SVG primitives for drift gauges, progress rings, sparklines, and timeline tracks. This keeps the visual layer small and inspectable, though the account does not report performance measurements for it.
Access states at the UI boundary
Typed ScopeError responses are surfaced in the interface as explicit access states, so a user who lacks permission sees a stated access condition rather than an empty or broken view. This is the author’s described design. It is not an independently audited security assessment.

IBM’s Introducing Decision Intelligence documentation describes an enterprise decision-automation lifecycle built from a Decision Assistant, a Decision Designer, and a runtime. Its Using Decision Designer documentation covers decision diagrams, task models, rules, and ruleflows, and Building decision services in Decision Designer explains how automations, services, and artifacts are organized.

The two are not equivalent. DecisionPrint helps teams retrieve and reason over decision history. Enterprise decision-automation tooling authors, tests, deploys, and executes operational decision logic. The comparison below uses the axes that matter for an architecture team choosing between them. It implies no product affiliation.
| Axis | DecisionPrint (as described by its author) | IBM Decision Intelligence (as documented by IBM) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Retrieve historical decision context and reason over it | Author, test, deploy, and execute decision logic |
| Evidence model | Links to original architectural excerpts with recorded dates | Decision inputs, rules, decision tables, and service artifacts |
| Temporal reasoning | Premise drift between original and current conditions; outcome chain | Not stated in the cited pages |
| Governance | Typed access boundary with explicit access-state handling | Not stated in the cited pages |
| Evaluation | First-person design account; no published validation or customer evidence | Official product documentation describing features; the cited pages report no outcome measurements |
The table shows where the two approaches differ in kind. DecisionPrint asks what a decision rested on and whether that still holds. IBM’s tooling asks how decision logic should be built and run. A team may need both questions answered, but the tools answer different ones.
What the evidence does and does not establish
- It establishes the features the author describes and the design choices behind them: the decision record, evidence links, drift display, outcome chain, typed facade, and access states.
- It does not establish performance, accuracy, adoption, or business impact. No named statistic about DecisionPrint has been published.
- It does not include an independent security audit of the access handling.
- The phrase “Why did we do this?” is the author’s framing, not an expert quotation or an endorsement from a standards body or regulator.
- The exact-title listing on DEV Community, under the profile of Anshika Kompelly, is dated September 28, 2026. The design detail in this article comes from a separate first-person post by Ram Pawar.
Practical checklist for teams adopting the pattern
- Store the premises behind each decision with its label, not just the label.
- Attach a recorded date to every evidence reference so a reader can tell whether an excerpt predates a change.
- Re-review a decision when one of its listed premises changes, such as consumer count or a replay requirement.
- Link incidents and postmortems to the decisions they follow, so follow-up questions start from the record.
- Keep memory and model internals behind a typed interface so the presentation layer can be changed or inspected on its own.
- Show access denials in the interface as well as in the backend, so users know why a view is unavailable.
