To get a Japanese IP address while you are outside Japan, connect your device to a VPN server located in Japan. Websites and apps then see that server’s public IP address, which geolocation tools report as Japanese. The process takes a few minutes, but the result has limits: a Japanese IP does not change where you live, which country your account is registered to, or which content a service makes available to you. This guide covers the setup, how to confirm the address is really Japanese, how providers differ, and where the method stops working.
What a Japanese IP address is and what it changes
An IP address is the public identifier your connection presents to the sites you visit. Geolocation systems map that address to a country, and a Japanese address is one they place in Japan. A person physically in Japan normally receives such an address from their local internet provider. A person abroad can obtain one by routing traffic through a VPN server in Japan, so the destination sees the server’s address in place of their own.

Keep in mind that the address is only one signal. Changing it affects what websites infer from your connection. It does not change your residence, billing country, or account region, and it does not make you eligible for a service that requires those things. Google Play’s rules are a clear example, covered below.
Step-by-step: getting a Japanese IP through a VPN
- Decide what needs the Japan address. General browsing, a work system that expects Japanese access, a specific app, and a streaming service each have different requirements. Read that service’s own rules and account requirements before you start, because a VPN does not override them.
- Choose a provider that currently lists a Japan location. Check whether it offers a Tokyo or other Japan server, whether its standard IP is shared or whether a dedicated IP is available, which devices and protocols it supports, its privacy policy, and its current price and refund terms. Treat the provider’s own claims as claims until you see them confirmed elsewhere.
- Record your normal public IP before connecting. Open any public IP lookup page and note the address and the country it reports. This gives you a baseline to compare against.
- Install the app and sign in. Use the provider’s official app where one exists, or configure a compatible VPN client using the settings the provider publishes. Sign in and select the Japan location, then connect.
- Verify the result. Reload the same IP lookup page. The public IP should now differ from your baseline and be reported as Japan. Check the IP from the same browser or app the target service uses, since some apps may send traffic outside the tunnel.
- Disconnect when you no longer need the route. Keep the provider’s connection and privacy settings in mind while you are connected, since they determine what the provider can see and how traffic is handled.
How to confirm the address is Japanese
A VPN app often displays an internal or tunnel address, which is not the same thing as the public IP that websites see. Only the public IP shown by a lookup page tells you what outside services receive. Use that figure, not the app’s internal address, when you judge whether the connection worked.

If the lookup still shows a non-Japanese location
- The tunnel dropped. Confirm the app shows a connected state and reconnect to the Japan location if it disconnected.
- An app bypasses the VPN. Some apps or browsers are excluded from the tunnel by split-tunneling settings. Check the exclusion list in the app.
- DNS or location signals conflict. Review the DNS settings your provider documents and check location permissions on the device if the service you are using relies on them.
- The provider’s support pages. If none of these explain the result, consult the provider’s help documentation for the specific device or protocol.
Passing the lookup check shows only what the lookup sees. It does not guarantee that a particular service will accept the connection.
Comparing providers on the criteria that matter
Provider pages describe their Japan offerings in different ways. The table below lists only what those pages state as of October 2026. Where a page does not state a detail, the cell says so rather than guessing. These are provider descriptions, not independent tests.

What to check before you pay
- Location list: confirm the Japan server is on the list at the time you buy, not only on marketing pages.
- Shared versus dedicated IP: a shared address is used by many customers, which can matter for services that flag heavily used addresses. A dedicated address costs more and its availability varies.
- Privacy documentation: read the current privacy policy and any independent audit material the provider publishes. Treat “no logs” statements as the provider’s own claim unless an independent audit supports them.
- Speed and access: no independent speed measurements or unblocking tests were used to produce this guide. Test the connection yourself where that is permitted, and check current plan terms and refund conditions.
Account country: why a Japanese IP is not enough
Google Play is the clearest case where an IP address cannot substitute for an account change. Google Play Help states that to set a new country you must actually be in that location and have a payment method from that country. Once a country is set, it generally cannot be changed again for at least 90 days, and some additional restrictions may apply. This 90-day interval is a platform policy as stated in Google’s current guidance, not a statistic.
Google also notes several consequences a VPN cannot change. Content available in the store may change after a country switch. Existing subscriptions stay tied to the old payment profile unless you cancel them. A balance held in the old country cannot be used in the new one. Follow the platform’s own rules for any account change, and do not rely on a VPN connection to meet them.

Streaming services: expect limits
Many people seek a Japanese IP to reach Japanese streaming catalogs, and this is where expectations most often go wrong. Netflix’s Help Center states that using a VPN may show only titles for which Netflix holds worldwide rights. It also states that VPN viewing is not supported for live events or for ad-supported plans and accounts. In Japanese, the official Help Center wording reads: 「VPN経由での視聴はNetflixのライブイベントや広告つきプラン、広告つきアカウントでは対応していません。」
Provider pages that advertise streaming support are vendor claims. Services can detect and block known VPN address ranges, and a server that works today may stop working. A Japan server does not guarantee access to a Japan catalog.

Routers and home setups
A router does not create a Japanese IP address by itself. A router can provide a Japanese exit address only when it is configured as a VPN client connected to a suitable Japan server, or when it is itself connected to a network located in Japan. Without that configuration, a router only passes along whatever address your provider assigns it. For most readers, a VPN subscription and app is the practical route, and hardware is an advanced option.

Connecting to a Japan VPN server gives you a Japanese public IP that websites will see, and a lookup tool is the way to confirm it. Use the provider’s documented Japan location, check the shared or dedicated IP arrangement, and read the target service’s rules. A Japanese address does not change your account country, and streaming services can still limit what you see.
