Yes, you can run a modded Minecraft server for free in 2026. The practical route is to create a free account with a host, select the same Minecraft version and modloader used by your modpack, install the server files, start the instance, and send your friends the address shown by the host. The two providers documented for 2026 illustrate the trade-off clearly:
- Falix: its current free-plan page lists shared memory, one CPU core, NVMe storage, unlimited listed player slots, one server per account and Europe hosting. A free instance sleeps after ten minutes with no players, and starts can be placed in a queue.
- Minehut: its 2026 Starter documentation lists a smaller memory allocation, ten player slots, no stated time limit while the server is being used, and sleep whenever the server is empty. Minehut describes itself as a freemium provider.
“Unlimited slots” should not be read as “unlimited modded players.” Every connected player consumes memory and CPU through entities, chunks, inventories and automation. A small, carefully chosen pack can work on a free plan; a large exploration or technology pack may need more memory than either free tier can provide.

Choose Falix when your pack needs a documented modloader, an integrated pack source, more working memory, or a predictable backup destination. Choose Minehut when a few people want a simple server and the pack is known to fit a very small memory budget. Neither provider’s cited pages publish an independent uptime measurement or a benchmark showing how many mods a free instance can run.
Check your modpack before creating the server
Server setup is easiest when you identify the pack’s exact technical requirements first. Write down the following from the pack’s official manifest or launcher page:

- Minecraft version, including the minor version (for example, a pack for one 1.x release is not automatically compatible with another).
- Loader: Forge, Fabric, Quilt or NeoForge.
- Pack release number and any required Java version.
- Whether the pack is client-only, server-only or required on both sides.
- Approximate number of players and whether the world uses heavy automation, dimensions or exploration.
Every player should install exactly the same pack release. A different loader, Minecraft version or mod file can produce a handshake error, a missing-mod message or a disconnect during loading. Cosmetic client-only additions may be allowed by some packs, but treat the published pack as the baseline until its documentation says otherwise.
How to create the free server
1. Open an account and create an instance
- Open the provider’s current website and create a free account with an email address you control. Use a unique password and enable any available account security option.
- From the dashboard, choose the option to create or activate a Minecraft server. On Minehut, stay within the free Starter option; on Falix, select the free plan rather than a paid resource tier.
- Give the server a short, recognizable name. Avoid putting your email address, real name or other private information in a public server name.
Free providers can change dashboard labels. Look for controls named Create server, New server, Activate or Start; the underlying choices are the same even when the wording changes.

2. Select the Minecraft version and loader
- Open the server’s software, version or modloader selector.
- Set the Minecraft version to the exact version in the pack manifest.
- Set the loader to the pack’s loader. Falix explicitly documents Forge, Fabric, Quilt and NeoForge.
- Save the selection and allow the panel to install the matching server files. Do not upload a Forge pack to a Fabric instance or mix NeoForge files with Forge files.
If the panel offers a one-click catalog, search by the exact pack name and release number. Falix documents one-click sources for Modrinth, CurseForge, Feed The Beast and Technic. Confirm the selected release after installation; similarly named packs often target different Minecraft versions.
3. Accept the server license and first-run files
- Start the server once so it can generate its directory structure.
- Open the file manager or console and locate the EULA file.
- Read the license and set the EULA value to accepted only if you agree to it. Save the file and restart the server.
- Wait for the console to report that the world has finished loading before attempting to connect.
A provider may put the first start in a wake-up queue. Do not repeatedly click Start while a queue is active; that can create duplicate requests or make the panel appear stuck. Keep the console open and watch for a ready message or an address becoming available.
4. Install or verify the modpack
With a catalog install, verify that the panel lists the intended pack and release. With a manual install, upload the server pack supplied by its author rather than copying a player’s entire client folder. Client configuration files, shader packs and performance-only mods can be inappropriate on a dedicated server.
Check the server’s mods, config and, where applicable, defaultconfigs directories. The server and every player should receive the same required mod versions. Follow the pack author’s instructions for generating a world or running a setup script; some packs create important settings only during their first launch.

5. Set basic gameplay options
- Open
server.propertiesin the panel editor. - Set the difficulty, game mode, PvP setting, view distance and simulation distance to values your pack can handle.
- Keep the online-mode or account-authentication setting enabled unless the pack’s documentation gives a specific reason to change it.
- Save the file and restart so the properties are applied.
Lowering view and simulation distance is often more effective than removing harmless cosmetic mods when the server struggles. It reduces the amount of world activity the single shared CPU must process, although players will see less terrain at once.
6. Start the server and share the address
- Start the instance from the dashboard.
- Wait for the wake-up process, queue and world-load messages to finish.
- Copy the address and port displayed by the provider. Do not substitute your home IP address; hosted servers use the address assigned in the panel.
- Give friends the same Minecraft version, loader and pack release, then have them enter the address under Multiplayer and Add Server.
Some free hosts change an address after a restart or require the server to be awake before it accepts connections. If a friend receives a timeout immediately after you start the server, wait for the ready message and try again.

Make the client and server match
Most “modded server is broken” reports are compatibility failures rather than hosting failures. Use this checklist for every player:
- Install the same Minecraft version shown in the server panel.
- Install the same loader and loader release family.
- Install the identical modpack release, not merely a pack with the same name.
- Remove extra client mods when the pack marks them as incompatible with dedicated servers.
- Copy the server’s required configuration changes when the pack author specifies them.
- Launch once with the pack locally before connecting, so missing dependencies are downloaded or reported on the player’s computer.
A “missing mods” screen usually identifies the first mismatch. Fix that item, restart the client and reconnect. If the message lists many differences, compare the complete pack release rather than adding files one by one.

Plan memory, CPU and player load
Modded Minecraft uses memory for the loader, mods, world data, entities and each active player’s loaded chunks. CPU demand rises with redstone, machines, villagers, chunk generation and dimensions. A server can therefore lag with only a few players if the world is busy, while a lightweight pack may support more people.

- Pregenerate only the area your pack’s documentation recommends; uncontrolled exploration creates a large stream of new chunks.
- Limit automated farms, rapidly ticking machines and large numbers of animals in shared areas.
- Use a conservative view distance and simulation distance, then raise them one setting at a time if the console remains healthy.
- Stop unused dimensions or optional systems when the pack provides a documented switch for doing so.
The free plans do not publish a reliable “mods per gigabyte” formula. Treat memory warnings, crashes during world generation and repeated watchdog messages as evidence that the selected pack or settings exceed the instance, not as a problem that adding more player slots will solve.

Free instances are not designed to behave like always-on rented machines. Falix documents sleep after ten minutes without players and warns that starts may queue; Minehut documents sleep whenever its free server is empty. Arrange play sessions around the wake-up delay and tell friends that the first connection may take longer than later connections.
Before a scheduled session, start the server and wait until the console reports readiness. If the panel shows a queue, leave the request active rather than creating another server. When the group finishes, stop the server cleanly from the dashboard so world data can be saved before the host suspends it.
Backups and recovery
Backups are essential because free hosting is provider-controlled and a modpack update can damage a world. Falix documents Google Drive backups on its free plan; configure that destination before experimenting with a new pack or major configuration change.

- Create a dated backup of the world and configuration directories, or run the provider’s backup job.
- Download a copy when the panel permits it, so the only copy is not inside the same hosting account.
- Record the Minecraft version, loader, pack release and configuration changes beside the backup.
- After an update, keep the previous backup until the new world has been tested by every player.
If a server fails after an update, stop it, restore the last known-good world and configuration, reinstall the previous pack release, and start once without players to check the logs. Do not overwrite your only backup with a damaged world.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server will not start
- Confirm that the selected Minecraft version and loader match the server pack.
- Read the first error in the console, not only the final “crashed” line.
- Check that the EULA has been accepted and that the panel has finished installing files.
- Remove a recently added mod or configuration change, restore a backup, and test again.
- If the console reports a memory or watchdog failure, reduce view and simulation distance or choose a smaller pack.
Players cannot join
- Verify that the server is awake and has reached its ready state.
- Copy the address directly from the dashboard, including the port if one is shown.
- Compare the client’s Minecraft version, loader and pack release with the server.
- Read the disconnect screen for a missing or extra mod and correct the complete installation.
- Have the player restart the launcher after changing loader files; launchers can retain the previous profile.
The world lags or freezes
- Ask whether lag occurs during new chunk generation, near farms or whenever several players enter different dimensions.
- Lower view and simulation distance, pause heavy machines and limit simultaneous exploration.
- Check console timing or watchdog messages for a recurring mod or entity.
- Keep the world near spawn compact until you know the pack fits the free resources.
The world disappeared or reverted
- Check whether the provider created a new instance after a failed reinstall.
- Look for the world folder and confirm the panel’s selected world name.
- Restore the newest verified backup rather than guessing which files belong together.
- If Minehut has more than the documented free-account allowance, review the August 2026 policy warning that additional servers can be scheduled for deletion.
Security and privacy basics
- Use a unique password for the hosting account and never share the dashboard login with players.
- Give operator permissions only to people who need them; use the in-game whitelist for everyone else.
- Keep the server address out of public posts if you want a private group.
- Do not install unknown jars or “performance” mods from random file mirrors. Use the pack author’s stated distribution and verify the file name and version.
- Back up before granting a new operator access or changing authentication settings.
When a paid tier or another approach is justified
Move away from the free tier when sleep and queues repeatedly interrupt sessions, when the pack cannot complete a clean startup, or when several players generate sustained lag after conservative settings. A paid upgrade can provide more memory, additional CPU capacity, a less congested region or always-on operation, but the correct threshold depends on the pack and player behavior. The provider pages cited here do not publish independent performance benchmarks, so do not choose an upgrade solely from a nominal slot count.
Self-hosting is another option if you already have suitable hardware and a reliable connection, but it transfers patching, backups, port exposure and uptime responsibility to you. For a first free modded server, hosted setup is usually simpler because the panel handles the public address and server process.
A repeatable launch checklist
- Identify the exact Minecraft version, loader and pack release.
- Choose Falix for its documented modloader and modpack support, or Minehut for a small, lighter setup.
- Create the free instance and install the matching server software.
