Generate thumbnails from each seller’s original photograph in the exact aspect ratio and responsive widths your directory cards use, then serve the smallest suitable variant for each device. Keep the untouched original, crop deliberately around the craft, encode a format your delivery path supports, and describe the visible item accurately in the filename and alt text. This produces cards that load quickly without making a sari, carved figure, basket, glaze, weave or embroidery look blurry.
The right pixel dimensions depend on your card design and on whether a card represents a seller profile, one handicraft, or both. The workflow below is implementation-neutral so it can be applied to a custom application, a CMS or an image-delivery service.

What a good directory thumbnail pipeline does
A thumbnail is a delivery derivative, not a replacement for the seller’s source photograph. Your pipeline should preserve the original and create one or more smaller files for the places where the image appears. A useful pipeline has these properties:

- Readable detail: texture, carving, glaze, weave and embroidery remain identifiable at card size.

- Clear semantics: filenames and alt text describe what is actually visible, without guessing a region, material or technique.
Google Search supports BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG and AVIF when an image is referenced by an img element’s src. That list describes Google Search support, not a guarantee that every browser, proxy or application accepts every format. Choose formats your complete delivery path can serve, and make each filename extension match the bytes it contains.

Start with the card design, not an arbitrary image size
Measure the rendered card
Record the image box width at each layout state: narrow phone, wide phone, tablet and desktop. Also record the height or aspect ratio. A card that is 180 CSS pixels wide on a phone does not need a 2,000-pixel image for that viewport; a high-density display may need more than 180 physical pixels, but it still does not need the full seller upload.
Use the actual design to choose a small set of widths, such as a narrow, medium and large variant. The values are examples of a design decision, not universal specifications. Include enough headroom for high-density screens and for the largest card in the layout, then stop. Oversized variants increase transfer and storage without improving a small card.
Choose the ratio for the content
Square cards make a mixed directory easy to scan, while a landscape ratio can suit wide product photographs. If the directory combines seller portraits and product images, define separate treatments rather than forcing both into one crop. Keep the source image so a later design can use a different ratio or a detail page can show the complete photograph.

Protect the subject during cropping
Crop around the object’s visual centre only when that keeps the object intact. For a tall vase, sari or sculpture, a portrait crop may be safer than a square crop. For a wide textile, a landscape crop may preserve the pattern. Do not stretch an image to fill the box. If a source photograph cannot fill the chosen ratio without losing the item, use a considered contain treatment or request a better source rather than hiding a defining feature.
Collect and retain seller source photographs
- Request a clear source: ask the seller for a photograph in which the relevant handicraft is visible and in focus. Avoid using a tiny image copied from a messaging app as the master.
- Store the original separately: keep the untouched upload with an immutable identifier. Derivatives can be regenerated when the card design, crop, encoder or format policy changes.
- Record ownership and consent: keep the seller’s submission metadata and any permissions your directory requires. This is separate from image resizing but prevents a thumbnail workflow from obscuring rights questions.
- Validate before processing: reject files that cannot be decoded, are empty, or do not show the intended subject. A technically valid file can still be unsuitable if the craft is too small or blurred.
Do not discard the original after making a thumbnail. A card crop is a presentation choice; it is not a durable archival copy.
Generate variants in an upload or build pipeline
A custom site can create derivatives when a seller uploads an image, during a build job, or both. The implementation details depend on your framework and storage, but the decisions are consistent.
Upload-time generation
At upload time, decode the source, correct its orientation according to the file’s metadata, create the intentional crops, encode each target format and write the derivatives to predictable paths. Save the original and a record of which variants succeeded. If one encoder fails, do not silently publish a file with a misleading extension; mark that derivative failed and serve a supported fallback.
Build-time or queue-based generation
For a large existing catalogue, a background job can process images without keeping an upload request open. Make the job idempotent: the same source identifier, crop policy and encoder settings should produce a replaceable set of derivatives. Record a version for your processing policy so a changed crop or quality setting can invalidate old files deliberately.

Choose stable naming
Use a short, descriptive, collision-resistant path based on the seller or listing identifier and a safe slug. Keep the extension truthful. For example, a visible blue handwoven basket might use a path such as seller-204-blue-handwoven-basket-640.webp when that description is known. Do not put unrelated search terms in a filename, and do not infer a craft origin or technique solely from appearance.
Use an image platform or CDN when it fits your operations
An image-delivery platform can resize and encode on request, cache variants and return a URL appropriate to the requested width. This reduces image-processing code in your application, but it introduces a dependency and a separate configuration surface. Confirm that the service supports your required crop controls, output formats, cache invalidation and access controls.

No single approach is universally best. A small directory with a known set of card sizes may prefer upload-time derivatives. A catalogue with many breakpoints or frequent design changes may value on-demand transformations, provided the service’s behaviour and costs are understood.

Compare formats at the displayed thumbnail dimensions, not only at 100% zoom on the original. Inspect fine weave, carved lines, glaze boundaries and embroidery. Choose the smallest file that still communicates the object clearly. Google’s guidance emphasises sharp, optimised images and responsive techniques; it does not establish one format as best for every directory.
Serve responsive images in the browser
Publish the variants you created and let the browser select an appropriate one. A srcset with width descriptors and a matching sizes expression prevents a narrow card from downloading the largest derivative. Keep a normal img fallback when using picture for newer formats.

</picture>Use dimensions that reflect the chosen crop’s ratio; the square values above are an example. Set eager loading only for an image that is immediately visible and important to initial rendering. Lazy-load images below the first viewport when your layout and navigation make that safe. Verify that your CSS does not enlarge a small source beyond the detail it can provide.
Write filenames and alt text that describe the image
Filenames
Keep names concise and descriptive: identify the listing or seller, the visible object and, when known, a meaningful distinguishing attribute. Avoid keyword strings such as a list of unrelated cities, materials or craft traditions. A filename should remain useful to a developer inspecting storage as well as to a search system.

Alt text should match the card’s purpose. For an item card, describe the visible item: “Blue handwoven basket”. For a seller profile, describe the person or business only when the submitted image and directory data establish that: “Meera Crafts seller profile”. If the image is decorative and the card already contains the same text, an empty alt attribute may be appropriate. Do not infer a state, community, material or technique from appearance alone.

Merchant Center dimensions are not directory-thumbnail rules
If you also submit product data to Google Merchant Center, its image-feed guidance is a separate requirement. The current guidance lists supported feed formats, a minimum of 500 × 500 pixels, a maximum of 64 megapixels and a maximum file size of 16 MB. It recommends images around 1500 × 1500 pixels or above for the best performance across its listing formats. The guidance says the minimum becomes 500 × 500 pixels for all products on January 31, 2027.
Those figures apply to Merchant Center product-feed submissions, not automatically to a seller directory’s cards. A 500-pixel feed image may be unnecessary for a 180-pixel card, while a detail page may need a larger derivative. Keep the two use cases’ validation rules separate.
Test the result on real cards and devices
- Check every crop: confirm that no handle, face, textile edge or decorative detail is cut off unexpectedly.
- Check multiple widths: test the narrowest and widest cards, including a high-density display, and confirm the selected file is not needlessly large.
- Check loading states: verify that a missing derivative, slow response or failed decode produces a useful fallback rather than a broken card.
- Check semantics: inspect the rendered HTML for the correct
alt, truthful extension, dimensions and responsive attributes. - Check visual quality: compare JPEG, WebP or AVIF candidates at the size users actually see. Texture that looks acceptable on a large monitor may disappear in a small card.
- Check direction and metadata: ensure camera orientation is applied before resizing and that an unexpected rotation does not change the crop.
Troubleshoot common thumbnail failures
The card looks blurry
Likely cause: the selected variant is smaller than the rendered box, the original was already low resolution, or repeated lossy encoding removed detail.

Fix: inspect the network response and the CSS-rendered width, add a larger source variant where justified, and regenerate from the retained original rather than from an existing thumbnail.
The file is large despite a small card
Likely cause: the browser is choosing the largest srcset candidate because sizes is missing or inaccurate, or the pipeline is serving the original.
Fix: model the real CSS width in sizes, publish widths close to your breakpoints, and confirm the response URL and byte size in browser developer tools.
The crop hides the craft
Likely cause: a fixed centre crop was applied to a subject that is tall, wide or off-centre.
Fix: store a focal point or crop instruction with the listing, use a ratio suited to the object, or choose a contain treatment. Do not stretch the image.

A modern-format image is broken
Likely cause: the response bytes do not match the extension, an intermediary does not support the format, or the picture element has no usable fallback.
Fix: verify the encoder output and content type, make the extension truthful, and retain a JPEG or other supported img fallback.
Images rotate unexpectedly
Likely cause: the source’s orientation metadata was ignored or applied twice.

Some cards show a broken image after a redesign
Likely cause: old URLs were removed or a new crop-policy version was not generated for every source.
Fix: keep stable source identifiers, generate the new variant set in a queue, retain old paths during the transition, and monitor failed derivative records before switching all cards.

Measure the image response users actually receive: dimensions, encoded bytes, cache status and time to display. Do not treat a smaller file as automatically better if the craft becomes indistinguishable. Conversely, do not preserve a large original in every card merely because it is sharper when viewed at full size.
Cache immutable derivatives with a versioned path or filename. When a seller replaces a source, create new derivative names or invalidate the old cache deliberately; otherwise visitors may see a previous photograph. Queue expensive transformations so a single upload cannot block the request that confirms the seller’s submission. Record failures and retry transient storage or encoding errors, while sending permanently undecodable files back for correction.
For operating cost, account for source storage, derivative storage, transformation compute, cache misses and bandwidth. An upload-time pipeline makes these resources visible in your infrastructure. A CDN or image platform may reduce application work but can charge for transformations, storage or delivery. Compare those totals at your directory’s expected upload and page-view volume rather than assuming one model is cheaper.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should a seller directory use one thumbnail for both a seller profile and a product listing?
Usually not. A seller profile and an individual handicraft have different subjects and cropping needs, so define separate image roles and alt-text rules even when they originate from the same submission.
Can I resize an existing thumbnail to make a larger card image?
Avoid it when possible. Regenerate every larger derivative from the retained original so you do not compound softness and compression artefacts.
When should I ask a seller for a replacement photograph?
Ask when the subject is out of focus, too small to identify, clipped by the intended crop or encoded so heavily that important texture cannot be read at card size.
Do Merchant Center’s 500 × 500 pixels rules determine my directory card size?
No. Those are feed requirements and recommendations for Merchant Center. Set directory dimensions from your own card layout, then validate any separate feed against its current rules.
