Generate a portfolio thumbnail by capturing the finished page in a consistent browser setup, choosing a viewport, element or full-page view that suits the project, and checking the image at the size visitors will actually see. For Marathi sites, inspect the rendered capture for correct Devanagari glyphs, vowel marks and font fallback before you publish.
Prepare the page before capture
- Open the finished live page or local project in the browser you plan to use. Wait for its content and web fonts to render.
- Use the same browser and viewport for projects you want to compare. Avoid accidental hover states, temporary overlays or other transient elements.
- Check the page as a portfolio visitor would see it. If a consent banner or popup obscures the design, dismiss it deliberately and keep that choice consistent across the set.
Browser, operating system, fonts, hardware and other environment factors can affect rendering. A consistent capture environment makes visual comparisons more dependable; Playwright discusses these considerations in its visual comparisons documentation.

Choose what part of the site to show
| Capture scope | Best suited to | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | A compact card that communicates the page’s first impression. | Make sure the visible area includes the strongest identifying design elements. |
| Page element | A particular section, such as a distinctive hero, menu or project feature. | Choose an element that makes sense on its own and does not omit context needed to understand it. |
| Full page | A long-form layout, documentation page or separate presentation image where the whole structure matters. | A tall capture can become unreadable when reduced to thumbnail size. Consider a separate full-page image rather than using it as the small card preview. |
Playwright documents viewport, element and full-scroll-page captures in its screenshot tools documentation.

Playwright supports PNG, JPEG and WebP output, along with CSS-pixel sizing and device-pixel scaling. Pick the format and scale your portfolio destination supports, then inspect the image after resizing it to the real card dimensions. There is no single best format for every destination.

For an automated capture, install Playwright and its Chromium browser, then save this as thumbnail.mjs. Replace the URL and, if appropriate, the selector with a part of your own site:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 1000 },
deviceScaleFactor: 2
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.locator('body').screenshot({ path: 'thumbnail.png' });
await browser.close();
This example captures the page’s body element, not the entire scrollable page. To capture the viewport instead, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'thumbnail.png' });. To capture the entire page, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'thumbnail.png', fullPage: true });. For one specific section, replace body with a selector such as .hero. Playwright’s screenshots guide covers these capture options.

Verify Marathi text and font rendering
A screenshot records the browser’s rendered page; it will not repair missing glyphs or incorrect font fallback. Inspect the actual image for Devanagari letters that render as empty boxes or unexpected shapes, vowel marks that are clipped, and text that becomes too small to distinguish in the final card.
- Use a font source with the necessary Devanagari glyph coverage, and specify a fallback family in the page’s CSS.
- Wait for the intended web font to load before capturing. Google’s guidance explains how to request fonts through a stylesheet and apply them with CSS, while retaining a generic fallback in the font stack: Get Started with the Google Fonts API.
- Test the actual Marathi text in the rendered page rather than relying on a Latin-only sample. The general font documentation does not certify that any particular family covers Marathi; check the family’s current metadata and the page itself. See Google Fonts and its Developer API.
Crop and export for the portfolio
Crop around the region that best represents the project, then keep the crop and presentation treatment consistent across the portfolio. The right dimensions depend on the portfolio platform: check its requirements rather than treating any thumbnail size as a universal standard. Google’s image guidance recommends cropping to relevant information and keeping images consistent: Diagrams, figures, and other images.

- Export to a format accepted by the destination: PNG, JPEG or WebP are supported by Playwright.
- Resize or scale the capture as needed, then view it at its actual portfolio-card dimensions.
- Check that the focal area, project identity and Marathi text remain clear enough at that size.
- Use the same framing and visual treatment for other project thumbnails, while choosing a crop that represents each page honestly.
Pair the preview with the project name, your role and a link to the live project or case study when available.
Troubleshoot common thumbnail problems
- The page looks unfinished in the image: the capture may have started before content or fonts finished loading. Wait for the page to render, and use an appropriate load condition or explicit wait for the content you need.
- Marathi characters look wrong: check that the intended font loaded, that the font covers the required Devanagari glyphs, and that the CSS fallback is suitable. Verify the actual page rendering before recapturing.
- Vowel marks or letters are cut off: inspect the original page and the crop. Allow enough space around text and avoid a crop boundary that cuts into glyphs.
- The full-page image is hard to read: use a viewport or element capture for the card, and reserve the full-page version for a larger presentation image.
- Projects look inconsistent beside one another: standardize browser, viewport, capture state and crop treatment, then compare the exported files at their displayed size.
- A popup or hover state dominates the preview: recapture after deliberately clearing the transient state, using the same approach for comparable projects.
