Generate product-page thumbnails as display-sized derivatives of accurate master product images—not as replacements for product-page images or shopping-feed assets. Choose a consistent crop, create sizes that match your storefront, and deliver responsive images so cards look sharp without making every device download an unnecessarily large file.
Start with the right source image
Use an original, accurate image of the exact product and selected variant. Preserve a high-quality master, then create smaller derivatives from it; repeatedly resizing a small thumbnail can degrade detail. For Merchant Center, the image URL must be crawlable and the image must accurately show the product. See Google’s Image link guidelines.

Where supplier images already meet your needs, use them as the source rather than photographing the product again. If you need to create source photos, a phone and suitable light may be enough; Shopify notes that a tripod can help, while Amazon Seller lists light tents or lightboxes and tripods as possible equipment. Choose a consistent crop that still identifies the product
Decide on a card aspect ratio—square is common, but your theme and products determine what works—and apply it consistently across the catalog. Position the product so distinctive features remain visible at the small display size. Keep images for color, size, or other variants accurate and distinct: the selected variant should not be represented by a thumbnail of a different option. Google asks merchants to provide images that match the selected variant in its product data specification.

Do not confuse framing advice for photography with a thumbnail specification. Amazon Seller advises that the product fill 85% or more of the frame in its product-photo guidance; that is composition advice for source photos, not a required thumbnail dimension.
What size should product thumbnails be?
Shopify’s 2026 image-size guidance suggests square product thumbnails of 150–300 px. Treat that as a starting point, not a universal requirement: inspect the actual rendered card size in your theme and account for high-density screens, which may need a larger source to look sharp. For storefront performance, provide image widths that suit the places your theme actually displays them. Shopify’s developer guidance specifically calls out the sizes attribute as a way to improve responsive product-grid delivery; the browser can use it with responsive image sources to select an appropriately sized file. Consult Shopify’s responsive-design guidance and your theme’s documentation for its supported image settings.

- Keep the master. Store the largest accurate source image separately from the card derivatives so you can regenerate crops or sizes later.
- Set the crop and framing. Choose the catalog’s aspect ratio and positioning rules, then check that the product remains recognizable and the selected variant is correct.
- Create sizes for actual placements. Use the storefront’s rendered dimensions and responsive behavior as the guide. Shopify’s 150–300 px square suggestion is a useful initial reference, not a mandate.
- Serve responsive sources. Configure your theme or image-delivery layer to offer suitable widths and use responsive markup or platform settings, including
sizeswhere supported, rather than sending a single oversized image to every card. - Choose a format and compression for the destination. Shopify supports multiple product image formats, and its imagery service selects formats supported by the customer’s web client. Balance clarity, file weight, platform limits, and compatibility; the available guidance does not establish one universal quality setting or target file size.
- Inspect a representative set. Review cards at their real displayed size on desktop and mobile. Include the smallest product, a long or irregular shape, and variant images; check crop, sharpness, color accuracy, loading, and fallback behavior.
Shopify describes supported product media formats at Product media types. For non-Shopify stores, use the formats supported by your platform and customers’ browsers.

Keep catalog thumbnails separate from Merchant Center images
A small on-site card image is not an appropriate substitute for a shopping-feed main image. Google says not to submit a thumbnail as the main image. Its current image guidance sets a 500 × 500 px minimum and recommends around 1500 × 1500 px or above for best performance across listing formats. Google says the 500 × 500 minimum will apply to all products beginning January 31, 2027. Do not upscale a smaller original to pretend it meets the minimum; provide a suitable source image instead. Check the current Image link guidelines and product data specification for the feed requirements.
- Keep the product unobstructed; omit added promotional text, watermarks, and borders.
- Ensure the image accurately shows the product and matches the submitted variant.
- Make the image URL accessible for crawling.
- If the product image was created with generative AI, retain its AI-origin metadata. Google specifically warns against removing embedded IPTC Digital Source Type metadata; check any additional labeling requirements that apply in your market.
