Review the suggested items before removing anything: Xbox says the tool can identify unused add-ons, shrinkable games, duplicate copies, and games you can no longer access. Then set a default install location or move less-used games to suitable external storage to reduce repeat cleanup.
Use Xbox’s Free up space recommendations first
- Open My Games & Apps > Manage > Free up space. Menu wording can change with system updates. Xbox introduced this cleanup view to surface content that may be removable.
- Review the candidates, which may include unused add-ons, shrinkable games, duplicate installations, and games no longer accessible to your account.
- Remove only items you do not need. An add-on may contain content you still want, so check what it is before confirming.
This is a useful first pass because it points to game-related content that may be taking space, rather than requiring you to guess what to delete.

Uninstall games or optional components you do not need
Remove an entire game
If you are finished with a game, uninstalling it can reclaim its installed space. You can reinstall it later if it is still available to your account and service terms. Uninstalling the game is different from deleting save data; do not delete saves as a routine way to make room for an install.

Check for separately removable content
Some games let you remove optional components, such as a mode or add-on, without uninstalling everything. This depends on whether the game developer supports selective component management, so do not expect the option in every title. Look for the game’s manage-installation options in the console interface. Xbox describes this as a title-dependent capability in its storage guidance.

Set a default location for future installs
If you have an external drive or a Series X|S Storage Expansion Card attached, choose where new games and apps should go by default. Open the storage-device settings and select Change installation locations, then choose the preferred device. Xbox documents this option as a way to manage installations across attached storage; the exact menu labels may vary after system updates. See Xbox’s installation-location guidance.
A default location helps avoid filling the console’s internal storage with every new download, but it does not increase the total capacity of your devices. Choose the destination based on whether you need to store a game or launch it directly.

Use USB storage for a library or transfers
A USB 3.1 external drive is useful for keeping games without using the console’s built-in capacity. Xbox says USB storage can directly run Xbox One games and backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. For a Series X|S optimized title, USB may still serve as a place to keep the game and move it when you want to play, but it is not the direct-play solution for every such title.

The Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card plugs into the console’s expansion port. Xbox says it can be selected as a default install location and can run games directly, with performance designed to match internal storage. It is the more relevant additional-storage option if your priority is directly playing Series X|S optimized games from the added device. Check current compatibility, capacities, availability, and pricing before buying; those details can vary over time and by region.

Stream instead of installing when the game is eligible
In an April 2025 update, Xbox said Game Pass Ultimate members could stream select games they own on Xbox consoles without downloading and installing first. Streaming can spare local storage for a supported game, but it depends on membership, title eligibility, and current service conditions. It will not help with a game that must be installed or is unavailable for streaming.
