1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe safest way to reclaim Call of Duty storage is to use its own content manager: open the game, choose Menu, select Manage Files, select Manage Files again, then uninstall campaigns, modes, language packs or optional assets you no longer use. On PC, use the launcher’s component selector as well. Do not delete random folders or saved data: those actions can leave a broken installation or permanently remove progress.
Start with Call of Duty’s built-in storage manager
Call of Duty is modular. A single installation can contain one or more annual titles, Warzone, Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, Dead Ops Arcade, language packs and optional high-resolution assets. You do not have to keep every module installed, and you can usually download an uninstalled module again from the platform store when you need it.

Activision recommends the in-game content-management system when removing a full game or game mode. Platform-level deletion can treat files as separate items, while the game knows which packages belong together.
Recommended Free Tools
Use this sequence on any platform that exposes the manager
- Open the platform’s storage screen first and note which Call of Duty entry or add-on is using space. This prevents you from removing the wrong title when several entries are listed.
- Launch Call of Duty and open Menu.
- Choose Manage Files.
- Choose Manage Files again if the first screen opens a category selector.
- Select the tile for the title, campaign, multiplayer package, Zombies, Dead Ops Arcade, language pack or optional asset you want to change.
- Choose the uninstall or install control, confirm it, and wait for the platform to finish processing the files.
The exact tiles can change after a seasonal update or when a new annual title is installed. Read the tile name before confirming; removing a campaign does not remove Multiplayer, and removing Warzone does not necessarily remove an annual Call of Duty title.

Why the in-game method is safer
- It identifies components by their game-facing names instead of opaque folders.
- It lets you keep the modes you actually play while removing large optional packages.
- It preserves the installation structure expected by the game and launcher.
- It makes later reinstallation straightforward through the same manager or the platform store.
Which Call of Duty components can you remove?
Available components depend on the title, platform and update. The common pattern is shown below. No universal gigabyte amount should be assigned to any row: file sizes vary by title, platform, language, texture package and update.
| Component | Remove it when | Can it be downloaded again? | What to check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign | You have finished the story or do not play it. | Usually yes, through the in-game manager or platform store. | Keep it if you are midway through the campaign and want immediate offline access. |
| Multiplayer | You only play Campaign, Zombies or Warzone. | Usually yes, subject to the title’s current packages. | Some shared assets may support more than one mode; review the tile description. |
| Zombies | You do not use the cooperative mode. | Usually yes. | Check whether the current title lists Zombies as a separate install. |
| Dead Ops Arcade | You never launch the mode. | Usually yes when the title exposes it as an installable package. | Do not assume every release includes this tile. |
| Warzone | You do not play the free-to-play battle-royale content. | Yes, when offered by the platform and current game manager. | Warzone is an opt-in download in the reorganized content model; removing it does not automatically remove every annual-title package. |
| Language packs | You use only one spoken or text language. | Generally yes through the title or platform download controls. | Keep the language you need for menus, subtitles and audio before uninstalling others. |
| High-resolution assets | You need space more than maximum local texture fidelity. | Usually yes, if the package is offered again. | Removing them can change visual detail; texture streaming settings may provide another compromise. |
After uninstalling, restart the game once and check the platform’s free-space display. The operating system may take a short time to refresh its calculation, especially while another download, update or verification task is running.
Free space on a Windows PC with the launcher controls
Battle.net
Battle.net provides a component selector for Call of Duty. Open the Call of Duty entry, choose Options > Modify Install, and clear the components you do not need. The installer updates the required-space figure as you change the selections, so use that number before applying the change.
- Open the Battle.net desktop application and select Call of Duty.
- Open Options, then choose Modify Install.
- Review each checked component and uncheck modes, titles, language packs or optional assets you do not use.
- Read the updated space requirement.
- Apply the modification and allow the launcher to complete the uninstall.
- Start Call of Duty once so it can reconcile the remaining packages.
If a component selector is unavailable, use the in-game Manage Files screen instead. Do not manually drag folders to the Recycle Bin; the launcher may continue to expect files that are no longer present.
Steam installations
Steam has its own library and file-management controls, and its labels can change with the Call of Duty package. Use the game’s available downloadable-content or installation controls rather than deleting subfolders. If the game reports missing or corrupted files, run Steam’s Verify Integrity command for the installation. Verification replaces damaged files; it is not a substitute for uninstalling a mode you intentionally no longer want.

Microsoft Store installations
For a Microsoft Store installation, use the Store or Xbox app’s installed-content controls when available. If the game fails to launch after a component change, use the app’s Verify and Repair option. The control repairs the registered installation and is safer than removing package files by hand.
PC checks before and after a component change
- Close Call of Duty and its launcher before changing installed components.
- Make sure no update is queued; an update can temporarily consume additional space.
- Record the free-space number before uninstalling, then compare it after the launcher finishes.
- If the number is unchanged, restart the launcher and Windows before repeating the check.
- Use the launcher’s repair or verification function only after the component change has completed.
Free space on PlayStation and Xbox
On PlayStation and Xbox, prefer the in-game Game Installs or Manage Files screen where the title provides it. The documented component pattern includes Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies, Dead Ops Arcade and optional high-resolution assets.
- Open the console’s storage screen and identify the Call of Duty entry or add-on.
- Launch Call of Duty and open Menu > Manage Files (or Game Installs where that label is used).
- Select the component tile you do not need.
- Confirm the uninstall and wait for the console to finish.
- Restart the game and recheck the console’s free-space display.
If you remove a mode and later change your mind, use the platform store or the same in-game manager to download it again. Availability and package names can differ between PlayStation and Xbox editions, so do not rely on a menu path from another console generation.
When the console storage screen shows several Call of Duty entries
Annual titles, Warzone and add-on packs may appear as separate entries. Match the entry with the tile name shown in Call of Duty before deleting anything. Removing an entry from the console dashboard without checking the game’s component list can leave shared files in place or remove more than intended.
Use texture streaming to reduce local storage pressure
Activision’s expanded texture-streaming system moves less frequently used content to a streaming cache instead of requiring every texture to remain directly on the device. The current setting is called On-Demand High-Quality Streaming and offers Optimized and Minimal choices.

| Setting | Local-storage approach | Bandwidth and image-quality effect | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimized | Uses the streaming system while retaining higher-fidelity graphics. | Higher bandwidth use than Minimal; intended to preserve better visual quality. | Players with a reliable connection who want sharper textures. |
| Minimal | Reduces reliance on streamed high-quality content and related bandwidth use. | Lower bandwidth use, with reduced graphical quality. | Players prioritizing data limits or a lighter storage footprint over maximum detail. |
Streaming is not a replacement for uninstalling an entire mode. It is a trade-off for texture data: choose Minimal only if lower visual quality is acceptable, and avoid changing the setting while a match or update is active. Your connection, data cap and platform behavior determine how noticeable the compromise is.
Do not confuse cache clearing with uninstalling content
What clearing a cache can fix
Cache clearing targets temporary files. Activision documents it as a troubleshooting step for corrupted temporary data, connectivity problems, freezes and slow loading. It is not a dependable way to remove a campaign, mode or high-resolution package, and any space recovered can be temporary.
Separate cache procedures exist for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Steam, Battle.net and Microsoft Store installations. Follow the procedure for your exact platform and launcher. If the problem is a damaged installation, use the launcher or platform’s verification and repair control after clearing temporary data.
Why saved-data deletion is different
Saved game data is not ordinary disposable cache. Activision warns that deleting saved data is permanent and recommends backing it up before deletion. Do not use saved-data deletion as a storage-cleanup shortcut. First remove an installable component through Manage Files; only address saved data when you are deliberately troubleshooting or resetting progress and have a backup.
If the reported free space does not change
Check that the correct package was removed
Return to Menu > Manage Files and confirm that the selected tile now shows as uninstalled. A title can have several entries, and removing one language or texture package may not produce a dramatic change in the overall storage screen.

Finish pending downloads and updates
Pause or complete queued updates before judging the result. A platform can reserve space for an update while it replaces files, making the free-space number look unchanged or temporarily worse.
Restart before repairing
Close the game, restart the launcher or console, and check storage again. If the game still reports missing files or fails to start, use the supported repair path: Steam Verify Integrity, Battle.net repair or cache guidance, or Microsoft Store Verify and Repair.
Recheck duplicate installations
Look for an older annual title, a separate Warzone entry or an unused language pack elsewhere in the library. Older content is not necessarily removed automatically when a new title arrives; you must uninstall unused packages yourself.
Compare cleanup choices before you remove anything
The right action depends on how much space you need and whether you value instant access, maximum visual quality or low bandwidth use.

| Delete saved data | Not a recommended storage-cleanup method. | Progress recovery is not guaranteed; Activision warns deletion is permanent. | No intended graphics benefit. | High unless backed up first. | Platform-specific and risky. |
| Move or install to an external SSD | Frees internal capacity by relocating compatible game data. | Not applicable. | No inherent quality change, but performance and playability depend on platform support. | Low when using supported move controls. | Check exact PlayStation, Xbox or PC compatibility. |
When an external SSD is the practical next step
If selective uninstalling still leaves too little room for updates, a portable external SSD can add capacity without deleting games. Check three things before buying or moving Call of Duty:
Best Value
- Customize your drive’s RGB lighting with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only) to show off your style and make every play personal.
- Kick loading into overdrive with a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 interface and speeds up to 2,000MB/s. (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.)
- Compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. {Compatible with PlayStation 4 Pro or PS4 with system software version 4.50 or higher, PlayStation 5 (Play and store PS4 games; archive PS5 games), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S (Play and store Xbox One games; archive Xbox Series X|S games).}
- Keep more of the latest and largest titles installed and ready to launch with capacities of up to 2TB. (1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.)
- Built with WD_BLACK toughness thanks to a shock-resistant structure, this durable drive can survive a drop of up to two-meters.
- Whether your exact PlayStation or Xbox model supports running games from that drive, rather than only storing them.
- Whether the PC launcher and Windows recognize the drive consistently with its assigned path.
- Whether the drive has enough free capacity for the game plus temporary update space.
Use the platform’s move or install control, then launch the game once from its new location. Do not disconnect the drive while an update, verification or content-management operation is active. An external drive solves capacity limits; it does not repair corrupted files, remove unwanted modes or reduce bandwidth requirements.
Why Call of Duty storage keeps growing
Modular annual titles
Each annual release can add its own campaigns, multiplayer packages, cooperative modes, languages and texture assets. Shared launchers make the library look like one game even when several packages are installed.
Warzone is now opt-in
The official content-reorganization roadmap separated Warzone from annual-title downloads so players can opt in to install it. That change reduces unnecessary downloads for players who do not use Warzone, but it does not remove older content automatically from every existing installation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Streaming and high-resolution assets are different choices
Expanded streaming technology was introduced to reduce file and download sizes, while high-resolution packages prioritize local visual fidelity. You can remove optional assets, change streaming behavior or do both, depending on your connection and available storage.
Updates need working room
Even after removing a mode, the launcher may reserve temporary space while downloading and replacing files. Keep additional headroom rather than filling the drive to its final byte; otherwise a seasonal update can fail despite the game itself fitting.
The roadmap dates this major content reorganization to August 21, 2024, and identifies Black Ops 6 launch as October 25, 2024. Package names and menu layouts can change in later updates, so use the labels shown in your current installation.
A repeatable maintenance routine
- Every time you install a new annual title, open Manage Files and remove campaigns or modes you do not plan to play.
- Keep only the language packs and optional texture assets that match your hardware and preferences.
- Review whether Warzone is installed separately and uninstall it if you do not use it.
- Use On-Demand High-Quality Streaming with Optimized for higher fidelity or Minimal for lower bandwidth and reduced graphical quality.
- Before a major update, verify that the drive has more free space than the game’s displayed requirement.
- If loading, freezing or connectivity problems appear, clear the platform-specific cache and then run the supported verification or repair tool.
- Back up saved data before any operation that explicitly offers to delete it.
- When internal capacity remains inadequate, move compatible content to a properly supported external SSD.
There is no single permanent Call of Duty install-size figure that applies to every platform. The space used depends on the title, edition, platform, language packs, modes, optional assets and updates. The reliable way to reduce it is therefore selective management: remove only the packages you do not need, verify the installation afterward, and treat saved data as irreplaceable rather than disposable.
