Activision lists 115 GB of SSD space available at launch for every Windows PC configuration, and mandatory updates may need additional room. Console launch sizes are not officially published in the reviewed material, so leave a generous buffer rather than relying on a community estimate.

How much storage Modern Warfare 4 needs
For Windows PC, Activision’s 2026 requirements specify an SSD with 115 GB available at launch for minimum, recommended and ray-tracing configurations. The Call of Duty technical article repeats that figure, says the specifications apply to launch and may change, and warns that mandatory updates can require additional storage.
Recommended Free Tools
| Platform | Published storage information | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | 115 GB of available SSD space at launch for all listed configurations | At least 115 GB free, plus a substantial buffer for updates and installation work |
| PlayStation 5 | No fixed Modern Warfare 4 console size is given on the reviewed product page; additional storage may be required | Use the Storage screen to check the actual package and leave room for updates |
| Xbox Series X|S | No fixed install-size table is published in the reviewed official material; additional storage may be required | Check Free up space and retain headroom on supported internal or expansion storage |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Activision says a preordered eShop copy downloads before launch and needs a small launch update, but no final size is stated | Check Data Management and verify available microSD Express capacity before downloading |
These are not permanent guarantees. The PC figure is explicitly a launch requirement, and the game’s specifications can be updated. A drive that has exactly 115 GB free may still fail when an update needs temporary working space, so treat the number as a floor rather than a target.

Why the game can need more free space than its download size
Updates need working room
A launcher may download compressed files, unpack them, verify their contents and replace older files. During that process, both old and new data can occupy the drive. A mandatory patch can therefore fail even when the displayed download is smaller than the free space shown in Windows or on a console.
Launch requirements are not the complete lifetime footprint
The 115 GB PC figure is for launch. Activision separately cautions that mandatory updates may require additional storage. Seasonal content, language files, graphics assets and bug-fix packages can change the installed footprint later.
Texture streaming still depends on local storage and internet access
Activision says Modern Warfare 4 uses texture streaming across all game modes to deliver high-quality visuals while reducing the game’s overall hard-drive footprint. Streaming does not eliminate the local installation: core files remain on the drive, and assets may be cached as you play. Activision’s FAQ also says a continuous internet connection is required for Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ because of texture streaming.

A physical installation still installs the game locally and then requires updates. The disc does not let you bypass the storage requirement or avoid allocating space for patches.
Before deleting anything: protect saves and capture files
Game installations and saved data are separate storage categories on modern consoles, while PC saves may be stored locally or synchronized by the launcher. Use the platform’s game or app deletion controls and inspect the category name before confirming.

Free up space on a Windows PC
1. Check the actual destination drive
Look at the SSD selected by your launcher, not just the total capacity shown for the computer. A second drive may have plenty of room while the system SSD selected for Modern Warfare 4 is nearly full. Confirm the free-space figure immediately before installation and again before applying a large update.
2. Use Windows Storage settings
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Review Temporary files, Installed apps, Other and any large category Windows reports.
- Select only items you understand. Temporary delivery files, old update packages and the Recycle Bin can be removed; do not delete personal folders merely because they are large.
- Uninstall unused games or applications from Installed apps.
- Empty the Recycle Bin after checking its contents. Files remain counted until the bin is emptied.
Windows category labels can vary by version. If a category is unclear, open its details or use File Explorer to identify the folders before deleting anything.

3. Move personal media and older libraries
Move recorded gameplay, videos, photos and archived installers to another internal drive or an external drive. You can also move older PC game libraries where the launcher supports it, then point the launcher to the new location instead of downloading those games again.
4. Choose the install location in your launcher
Activision documents Battle.net, Steam and the Xbox PC app as PC installation routes. In whichever launcher you use, select Modern Warfare 4, open its install-location control and choose the SSD with enough free space. Check the capacity shown by the launcher before clicking Install. If the launcher offers a separate location for updates or temporary files, make sure that drive also has room.
5. Add an SSD when cleanup is not enough
A 1 TB SSD is a practical capacity choice for a PC that needs to accommodate a 115 GB game plus Windows, updates and other titles; it is not an Activision requirement. Before buying, check whether your computer accepts an M.2 NVMe drive or a 2.5-inch SATA drive, whether a compatible slot or bay is free, and whether you need a mounting screw, cable or adapter. Confirm motherboard support and operating-system compatibility, then initialize and format the drive in Windows before selecting it in the launcher.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.

For a game drive, compare usable capacity after formatting, sustained read/write performance, warranty and price per terabyte. A faster headline speed is irrelevant if the drive cannot be installed in your computer or lacks a supported interface.
Free up space on PlayStation 5
1. Identify what is using the internal SSD
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Review the categories for games and apps, saved data, captures and other content.
- Open the games-and-apps list and sort or inspect large entries so you can remove the least-used titles first.
2. Delete the installation, not saved data
Use the game/app deletion control for an unused title. Do not open the saved-data management screen unless you intentionally want to remove progress. Captures can be deleted separately after you have copied anything worth keeping.
3. Move compatible games
PS5 games must run from the console’s internal SSD or an approved M.2 expansion drive. Compatible PS4 games can be stored on USB extended storage and moved back when needed. Use the console’s move function rather than manually changing folders.
4. Install Modern Warfare 4
Activision’s installation path is Game Library > Your Collection > Modern Warfare 4 > Download. The game installs automatically after you start the download. Because no fixed PS5 size is published in the reviewed material, check the package size shown by the console and keep additional headroom for mandatory updates.
Free up space on Xbox Series X|S
1. Open the built-in cleanup screen
- Open My games & apps > Manage > Free up space. The wording can vary after a system update.
- Review unused games, captures and add-ons.
- Delete only items you recognize, and preserve captures by copying them first if necessary.
2. Move games to supported storage
Use a compatible expansion card or external drive to store games that do not need to run from the internal SSD. Keep the active Modern Warfare 4 installation on storage supported for the title; the console will identify whether an item can be played from the selected drive. Do not assume that any USB drive provides the same performance as internal or approved expansion storage.

3. Install all required content
Activision’s installation path is My games & apps > Full library > All owned games > Modern Warfare 4 > Install all. Xbox’s official information warns that additional storage may be required for updates, so do not fill the remaining capacity immediately after the initial install.
Free up space on Nintendo Switch 2
Activision says an eShop preorder downloads before launch and receives a small launch update. The reviewed official sources do not publish a final Modern Warfare 4 console size, so any precise number circulating elsewhere should be treated as anecdotal until the eShop or console reports it.
- Open the Switch 2 Data Management screen and inspect software, screenshots, videos and free space.
- Archive unused software to remove its local installation while keeping the software icon and save data available for redownload.
- Delete unwanted screenshots and videos after exporting anything important.
- Check the available capacity of the installed microSD Express card before starting the download. Confirm that the card is compatible with Switch 2; an older card type may not be suitable for the console’s game-storage requirements.
Because no final install-size figure is established, let the console’s download screen determine the required space and keep extra room for the launch update.
What you can delete safely
| Item | Usually safe to remove? | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Unused game installations | Yes | Confirm you are deleting the game/app, not saved data |
| Temporary files and old update packages on Windows | Usually | Review the category details and leave active downloads alone |
| Console screenshots and video captures | Yes, if no longer needed | Copy wanted files before deletion |
| Optional add-ons or language packs | Only when the platform exposes them as removable content | Check the game’s Manage Content screen; there is no definitive published list of removable Modern Warfare 4 packs |
| Saved data or cloud-save entries | No, unless you intend to erase progress | Use game/app deletion instead |
Do not delete individual folders inside a PC game installation to guess which content is optional. An incomplete installation can trigger a full verification or redownload and consume more space than the cleanup saved.
Choosing between cleanup and a larger drive
Use the following decision order:
- Remove low-risk clutter first: captures, temporary files and unused applications.
- Move infrequently used data: personal media and older game libraries can go to another drive.
- Move compatible console games: use USB or expansion storage according to the console’s performance rules.
- Expand PC storage: choose a 1 TB SSD only after confirming M.2 NVMe or 2.5-inch SATA support and an open slot or bay.
- Recheck free space: verify the destination drive and any drive used for temporary files before retrying the installation.
When comparing two storage options, assess usable formatted capacity, interface and platform compatibility, sustained performance, warranty and price per terabyte. On consoles, certification and the permitted installation location matter more than a headline speed. On a PC, an incompatible connector or missing slot makes an otherwise attractive drive unusable.

Fixes when installation or an update still fails
The launcher says there is not enough space
Close other downloads, empty the Recycle Bin, remove another large application and restart the launcher so it refreshes the free-space figure. Check every drive involved, including a system drive used for temporary extraction. If the destination is still below the published requirement plus a buffer, choose another drive or expand storage.
The download completed but installation stopped
Leave more room than the download size, then retry the launcher’s verify or repair function. Installation can require both compressed download files and expanded game files. Avoid manually deleting files from the game directory while verification is running.
An update will not apply after the game was installed
Free additional space rather than relying on the original launch calculation. Mandatory updates can need temporary space and can change the total footprint. On a console, use the platform’s Manage Storage or Free up space screen; on Windows, check the selected install drive and the drive containing temporary files.
The game disappeared after moving storage
Reconnect the expansion drive or card, confirm it is recognized by the platform and use the launcher or library’s locate, move or install command. Do not delete saved-data entries while trying to restore the installation.
You are unsure whether a content pack is removable
Open the platform’s Manage Content screen for Modern Warfare 4 and remove only components explicitly identified as optional. Official material reviewed for this guide does not provide a complete post-launch list of removable packs, so do not rely on an unofficial size chart.
Quick Recap
A practical storage checklist
- On PC, confirm at least 115 GB free on the selected SSD at launch, then add room for updates and temporary installation files.
- On PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, use the console’s own storage screen because a final fixed console-size table is not published in the reviewed sources.
- Delete games, captures and temporary files through platform controls.
- Keep saved-data and cloud-save entries unless you deliberately want to erase progress.
- Move compatible games or media to supported external storage.
- For a PC SSD upgrade, verify interface, slot or bay, motherboard support and usable capacity before buying.
- Leave the internet connected for Multiplayer, Private Matches and DMZ, which Activision says require continuous connectivity because of texture streaming.
- Recheck free space before every major update; launch capacity is not a lifetime guarantee.
