Use built-in storage tools to identify what is taking space, check the available space again after cleanup, and try the installation before buying additional storage. The right steps—and whether an external drive can run a game—depend on your device.
1. Check which storage is full
Make sure you are checking the destination the game will actually use. Clearing space on another drive may not help if the installer is pointed elsewhere.

Windows
- Open File Explorer and select This PC to see the available space on each drive.
- Open Settings > System > Storage to review storage use by drive and category. Microsoft’s Storage settings guide explains the controls and views available in Windows.
PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Steam
Open the platform’s storage-management screen or, for a Steam game, Steam’s Storage Manager. Check the intended installation location before removing anything. Menu labels can vary by device, software version, or console generation, so follow the instructions for your exact model.

2. Find space you can safely reclaim
Work through likely candidates one at a time and recheck available space after each meaningful change. Microsoft advises: “Try them in order—after each step, check to see if you’ve freed up enough space before moving on to the next one.” See its Windows cleanup guidance for current options.

Windows: inspect large personal files
Look through folders such as Downloads, Videos, Music, and Pictures. Sort by size if useful, then open or otherwise verify a file before deciding what to do with it. Move files you want to keep to another drive or supported external storage; delete only items you no longer need. Empty the Recycle Bin afterward, or deleted files may continue to occupy space.
Windows also offers Storage Sense and cleanup recommendations. Review the categories and items selected before confirming a cleanup. In particular, removing a previous Windows installation folder such as Windows.old removes the option to return to the previous Windows version, according to Microsoft. Do not treat it as routine expendable clutter if you may need that rollback.

Consoles: review installed software and captures
Use the console’s own storage manager to inspect installed games, applications, and captures. Read the device’s labels carefully: how games, save data, and captures are handled differs by platform, so do not assume that deleting an item has the same effect everywhere.

Nintendo says downloadable software can be archived or deleted to free storage without affecting save data. Its instructions for managing downloadable software describe the available actions; consult the Nintendo data-management FAQ for related details. Check that you are following guidance for your Switch generation.

3. Retry the installation before buying storage
After cleanup, check the free space on the intended destination and retry or resume the install. Use the game’s current store listing or installation prompt for its space requirement, then let the platform report whether it needs more room. There is no universal free-space multiplier for large games: requirements vary, and the official platform sources here do not establish one buffer that applies to every title.

Additional storage can help, but compatibility and what you can do with stored games depend on the platform. Confirm the exact device model and current manufacturer guidance before buying.

Windows
An external drive can be useful for moving or keeping personal files. Whether a particular game can be installed or played from a given drive depends on the game, launcher, and setup; the platform-specific console rules below should not be applied to every PC.
PS5
PS5 USB extended storage can hold PS5 game data, but PS5 games must be moved back to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play. For expansion that lets you play PS5 games from the added storage, consider a compatible M.2 SSD and check Sony’s current requirements for your exact console before purchase. The referenced Sony safety guide lists an M.2 SSD capacity range of 250 GB to 4 TB for the model family it covers; that specification is guide- and model-specific, not a universal recommendation.

Nintendo Switch
MicroSD cards provide an additional-storage option for Switch systems, but check compatibility for the exact console generation and the requirements of the games you want to install. Nintendo states that a Switch 2 has 256 GB of storage, with a portion reserved for system use; that is the console’s capacity, not the amount free on a particular device or a game’s installation requirement. Available space and the titles in your library determine whether extra storage is needed.
Steam
Steam’s Storage Manager can manage game installations and locations. If a game appears uninstalled or a download resets after using an external drive, consult Steam Support’s guidance for that issue. Its external-drive cautions address that installation-recognition problem; they should not be read as a universal rule for every Steam setup.
