Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a small Minecraft Java server running vanilla or Paper, start with a 2–4 GB Java heap. A modpack, plugins, more activity, or larger view and simulation distances can call for more. Treat those figures as starting estimates, not official Mojang requirements, and leave memory for the operating system and Java overhead: PaperMC advises reserving about 1,000–1,500 MB beyond the heap.
First, separate server RAM from client RAM
Mojang’s Java Edition system requirements describe the computer used to play Minecraft, not the heap for a dedicated server. In requirements published July 21, 2026, Mojang lists 8 GB of system RAM with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics for its minimum client target (1080p at 30 FPS); its recommended client target (1080p at 60 FPS) calls for 16 GB. Those numbers are not server allocation guidance. Mojang’s Java Edition system requirements.
The distinction also matters for Minecraft Java Edition 26.1: Mojang raised the game’s default client memory allocation from 2 GB to 4 GB. That change does not establish a dedicated server’s RAM requirement. Java Edition 26.1 release notes.
Starting heap by server type
The ranges below refer to Java heap, not the total physical RAM that must be available on a self-hosted machine. Workload and configuration matter, so use these as initial estimates and verify them on your world.

| Server workload | Practical starting heap | What the estimate means |
|---|---|---|
| A few friends, vanilla or Paper | 2–4 GB | A 2026 third-party guide estimates 2 GB for 2–5 friends; 4 GB gives a small server more room. Neither is an official requirement or a guarantee. Minecraft Java Servers’ 2026 estimates. |
| Small public or more active vanilla/Paper | Around 4 GB to start | PaperMC uses a 4 GB heap in its example startup command. Its broader Aikar’s flags guidance recommends at least 6–10 GB under its stated advice, so the figures should not be read as one universal minimum. PaperMC’s Aikar’s flags guidance. |
| Modpack server | Often 6–10 GB as an estimate | A third-party 2026 guide offers this range; actual use varies by pack and activity. It is not a Mojang requirement. Minecraft Java Servers’ 2026 estimates. |
| Large public server or heavy plugins, mods, entities, or distances | Measure; no universal figure established | The reviewed references do not support a fixed RAM-per-player rule. CPU capacity, software, settings, and workload also affect capacity and performance. |
PaperMC’s 4 GB example is a command example, while its 6–10 GB Aikar’s flags recommendation is broader operational guidance. Neither makes every Paper server’s needs identical. PaperMC also cautions, “Do not allocate all of your available memory on a shared host!” and advises leaving about 1,000–1,500 MB beyond Xmx for Java overhead and the operating system. Returns diminish above a point, according to that documentation. PaperMC documentation.
What makes memory use vary?
Server software, version, and added content
Vanilla, Paper, plugin-heavy servers, and modded servers do not have identical memory behavior. Extra systems and content can raise server use; a modpack’s client RAM label is only a rough clue, not a server allocation target. Check the server-side requirements where the pack provides them. Match Java to the server version as well: PaperMC lists Java 21 for versions 1.20–1.21.11 and Java 25 for 26.1 and later. Check its live compatibility table when setting up because version support changes. PaperMC getting started and compatibility information.

Players, activity, and world settings
Concurrent players are relevant, but player slots alone do not translate into a dependable RAM formula. Exploration, world generation, farms, active entities, plugins, and mods all shape the workload. PaperMC documents the view-distance and simulation-distance settings in server.properties; simulation distance controls how far away entities are ticked. These settings affect workload, but the documentation does not provide a fixed amount of RAM saved per distance step. PaperMC server properties reference.
Physical RAM and CPU are separate constraints
The Java heap is only one part of memory use on a host. The host needs headroom for Java overhead and the operating system, so do not set Xmx to the machine’s entire RAM capacity. And if memory is not persistently under pressure, a larger heap may not resolve lag caused by CPU limits or slow tick processing.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 Model B comes equipped with 8GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
Choose an allocation and check whether it works
- Identify the edition and workload. Record whether you are running Java or Bedrock, the Minecraft version, server software, mods or plugins, likely concurrent activity, and configured distances. The numeric starting points in this guide are mainly for Java and Paper; they should not be applied automatically to Bedrock.
- Set the heap with host headroom. Choose a conservative starting amount for the workload and set
-Xmsand-Xmxaccordingly. PaperMC’s example uses a 4 GB heap; its documentation explains that these options set the configured memory amount. Keep roughly 1,000–1,500 MB beyondXmxavailable for overhead and the OS, following PaperMC’s guidance. - Test with real play. Run the actual world and typical workload, then inspect heap use after garbage collection. A 2026 third-party guide suggests considering more memory when post-GC use remains above about 80% of the heap or old-generation collections occur every few minutes. These are that guide’s diagnostic heuristics, not official or universally validated thresholds. Minecraft Java Servers’ diagnostic guidance.
- Diagnose lag before raising the heap. If memory is not persistently pressured but the server still lags, investigate CPU and tick performance, plugins or mods, and settings before adding RAM.
- For a self-hosted machine, check the platform first. If measurements show physical memory is the constraint, verify the motherboard or system’s supported RAM generation, form factor, and capacity before choosing a compatible RAM kit. There is no single universally compatible module.
How to compare hosting plans or hardware
Before choosing a host or upgrading a self-hosted machine, check what its memory figure represents and whether the rest of the setup fits the workload:
