Before preordering, check the exact storefront’s cancellation and refund rules, when it will charge you, and what actions can close your cancellation window. Terms differ by platform, region, seller, and digital versus physical format, so confirm them on the store where you plan to buy.
Start with the store, region, and format
“Preorder” does not describe one universal arrangement. A digital purchase through a console store, a Steam purchase, and a physical copy from a retailer can have different payment dates, cancellation rights, and delivery terms. Check the policy that applies to your account and the specific listing; examples below are limited to the regions and services identified.

- Identify the storefront and your region.
- Confirm whether the item is digital or physical, and whether it includes Early Access or Advanced Access.
- Find the cancellation deadline, refund conditions, charge date, and any return or shipping terms before you pay.
When will you be charged?
Payment timing can differ even within the same brand. Nintendo’s Americas support says payment for a Nintendo eShop digital preorder is processed no sooner than seven days before release. Its U.S. Nintendo Store page says a physical pre-purchase is charged immediately. Check the terms for your own region and listing rather than assuming either schedule applies to every Nintendo preorder. Can you cancel a digital preorder?
Look for the deadline and the actions that end eligibility. A cancellation window may close before release, or once downloading or streaming starts; an automatic download can matter even if you did not manually start it.
Nintendo eShop
Nintendo’s Americas eShop FAQ says you can cancel before payment is processed and the game is preloaded, with the stated window extending up to seven days before release. The game preloads in a non-playable state and requires an update to play at release. Nintendo also says a failed payment can cancel the preorder. PlayStation Store in Canada
Under PlayStation’s Canadian policy, if you have not started downloading or streaming the main content, the cancellation deadline depends on when you paid:

- Paid 14 days or less before release: cancel up to 14 days after payment.
Starting the main download or stream generally removes cancellation eligibility unless the item is faulty. Automatic downloads may occur if enabled. This is the Canada policy; check the policy for your own country before relying on these deadlines. PlayStation Store cancellation policy (Canada).
Steam
Steam’s published standard refund rule generally allows a request within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. For a pre-purchased game that is not playable before release, you can request a refund before release; the standard 14-day and two-hour period begins on release. Early Access or Advanced Access playtime before release counts toward the two-hour limit. Steam says you may still request a refund outside the standard rules, but approval is not guaranteed. Check preload, early access, and bonuses
Preload does not necessarily mean you can play early, and early access can affect refund eligibility. Check when the game becomes playable, whether an update is required at launch, and whether the edition you are considering grants access before the standard release.

Compare editions by their actual included content rather than labels such as “deluxe.” Check whether bonuses are cosmetic or functional, when they arrive, whether they require a separate code, and what happens to them if you cancel. Nintendo says its eShop preorder bonus code is provided only after payment is processed and the game is preloaded; that timing is specific to Nintendo’s stated eShop process. For a physical game, assess the seller and delivery promise as carefully as the price. Marketplace rules can vary, so confirm whether the listing is sold by the retailer or a third-party seller and whether the marketplace’s protections apply to that seller and item. - Check the full total, including shipping and other charges.
- Read the promised ship or delivery date, cancellation cutoff, and return policy.
- Confirm who handles a delay, missing package, or refund.
- Save the order confirmation, listing’s delivery promise, seller policy, and relevant messages.
For U.S. orders covered by the FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, a seller generally must ship within the advertised time or within 30 days if no shipping time was stated. If it cannot ship on time, it must notify you and offer a choice between accepting the delay and canceling for a full refund. The FTC also describes protections for certain credit-card billing errors, but whether those apply depends on the circumstances; do not assume every preorder dispute qualifies. FTC: Online Shopping.

Nintendo’s U.S. store illustrates why physical and digital terms should not be conflated: it says a physical pre-purchase is charged immediately and ships one to three business days after its release date, and that cancellation requires contacting support. Decide whether to preorder or wait
Preorder when the specific edition and its terms suit you, and you are comfortable with the remaining uncertainty. If you are unsure about performance, features, or whether the game will meet your expectations, waiting for more gameplay information or reliable reviews is a practical alternative. No universal review date or guarantee can tell you when that information will be available.
