Check available space, run the phone’s built-in cleanup, then review large files you can safely move or delete. ColorOS updates do not have one published storage requirement that applies to every model, so follow the amount and instructions shown on your own update screen.
1. Check how much storage is available
Open Settings and look for Storage. OPPO says ColorOS 11 and 12 show a Storage view directly in Settings; on ColorOS 3.0–7.2, the route may be Settings > Additional Settings > Storage. Some phones also show remaining capacity in File Manager. If these labels do not match your device, search for “Storage” in Settings. Paths can vary by model and software version. OPPO’s storage-cleanup guidance gives version-specific examples.

2. Run Phone Manager’s built-in cleanup
Open Phone Manager—on some phones it is in the Tools folder—and choose Clean Up Storage, Clean Up, or the similarly named cleanup action. OPPO says this feature detects temporary files, cookies, and caches. The exact label and availability depend on the device and region; OPPO notes that the feature may be unavailable on some models in Europe, India, and Japan. Its support instructions cover ColorOS 7.0 through ColorOS 16 and above, while the OTA troubleshooting page shows slightly different paths for ColorOS 12–13+ and ColorOS 15–16. 3. Find large files and decide what to remove
If cleanup has not freed enough space, use the Storage view or Phone Manager’s Deep Clean feature to identify large photos, videos, audio, documents, downloads, and apps. Delete only items you recognize and no longer need. OPPO warns that items removed through Deep Clean are permanently deleted and cannot be restored through that action.

Media can occupy space quickly. OPPO’s 2023 examples estimate about 10 MB for a typical 50-megapixel photo on the Find X5 Pro and roughly 500 MB (0.488 GB) for one minute of high-bitrate 4K 60 fps video; actual sizes vary. The company also claimed ColorOS 14’s ROM Vitalization could save up to 20 GB, but that is not a guaranteed result of routine cleanup or an amount every model will recover. OPPO’s explanation of these storage figures provides the context.
4. Back up wanted files before deleting them
Move photos, videos, or documents you want to keep to a computer or another backup location you have checked, then confirm the copies are accessible before removing the phone versions. OPPO recommends backing up files to a computer and deleting unused files when storage is insufficient. OPPO’s OTA guidance describes this approach.

Do not confuse app cache with app data
Clearing cache and clearing data are different actions. OPPO says Clear data can erase application information, including login details, updates, and patches. Check what the app stores locally and back it up where possible before using that option; do not treat it as a routine way to clear disposable cache. OPPO’s storage-cleanup guidance explains the warning.

After cleanup, return to the system update screen and follow its on-screen instruction. OPPO’s reviewed support guidance says insufficient storage can prevent an update, but does not give one free-space threshold for all ColorOS updates. Do not assume a fixed number or that every update needs a particular multiple of its download size. If the warning remains, free additional space carefully or contact OPPO support for advice specific to your model. OPPO’s OTA troubleshooting article lists insufficient storage as one possible cause of a failed update.

If there is enough space but no update appears
Storage is not the only reason an update may be unavailable: OPPO says rollout eligibility can depend on the phone model and region. If the device reports sufficient space but offers no update, check whether the release is available for your model and region before deleting more files. OPPO’s OTA guidance covers these availability factors.
