What is known about Squadron 42 and Steam Deck
In a support article updated February 4, 2026, Roberts Space Industries (RSI) said, “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” That article addresses availability at that time, not Steam Deck compatibility. Read RSI’s Squadron 42 FAQ.

The Steam listing could not be independently verified, so confirm those details against the live store page. These reported PC specifications do not establish whether the game will run through Proton or perform acceptably on Deck hardware. Read the October 11 report.

Why PC requirements do not answer whether it will run on Deck
Steam Deck compatibility involves more than whether a game can launch. Valve’s Deck review considers controller support, legibility, performance, and system support. A Windows requirement alone does not tell you whether a game works through Proton, whether its controls suit the Deck, or whether it runs smoothly on the handheld.
Valve’s general Proton guidance explains how Windows games can run on SteamOS, but it is not a Squadron 42 compatibility result. Look for the game’s own Steam Deck rating or game-specific testing instead. What to check before deciding
- Find the game-specific Deck rating. When the Steam listing is available, check its Steam Deck status on the store page or in your Deck library. Verified or Playable indicates Valve has reviewed compatibility; it is more useful than assuming all PC games work on Deck.
- Look for sustained performance tests. Once the game is playable, check testing on Steam Deck hardware for frame-rate stability, graphics settings, loading, battery draw, and demanding scenes. Desktop requirements cannot substitute for these results.
- Check controls and readability. Confirm the built-in controls work as expected and that menus and text are legible on the handheld screen. These are among the areas Valve reviews.
- Confirm operating-system and launcher needs. Check whether SteamOS and Proton are supported and whether an external launcher, account sign-in, or other software requirement affects play. The sources available do not establish Squadron 42’s specific SteamOS or launcher behavior.
- Recheck current release details. Near release, verify the live RSI and Steam information. Release timing, requirements, and compatibility details can change; RSI’s February 2026 download-status article is not a current Deck compatibility statement.
Should you buy a Steam Deck for Squadron 42?
Not on the assumption that Squadron 42 will work well on it. Until there is an official compatibility status or credible game-specific testing, Deck performance remains unknown. If you already own a Deck, wait for the rating and tests before counting on it as your way to play. If you are considering buying one specifically for this game, make that decision only after compatibility and performance are established.
