Record the asset, date and time, units, U.S.-dollar value, basis, and costs. Do not rely on an exchange statement alone: you may need to combine records from multiple platforms and wallets, and most 2025 Forms 1099-DA will not show basis.
This guidance covers U.S. federal taxes. State and non-U.S. rules may differ, and the right reporting treatment depends on the transaction.

What records should you keep?
The IRS says to retain records documenting digital-asset purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, other dispositions or transfers, and the fair market value of digital assets received as income or business payment. The records should support the positions you take on your federal return. The IRS’s digital-assets guidance identifies the core details needed to calculate gain or loss:
- Asset type
- Transaction date and time
- Number of units
- Fair market value in U.S. dollars
- Basis for assets disposed of
For an acquisition, also preserve the acquisition date and time, units acquired, and acquisition fair market value. Keep the underlying confirmations, statements, wallet histories, receipts, and fee details that support those entries; a ledger is an organizer, not a substitute for evidence.

How to build a transaction ledger
Use a spreadsheet, accounting system, or paper ledger that lets you connect each entry to its source evidence. The IRS does not prescribe a particular product or storage method. A practical ledger has one row for each event and fields such as:
- Asset name or ticker, and network or token identifier if needed to distinguish it
- Event type: purchase, income receipt, sale, exchange, transfer, fee, or another event
- Date and time, with the source time zone noted
- Units received, disposed of, transferred, or charged as a fee
- Gross proceeds or fair market value in U.S. dollars at the relevant time
- Acquisition basis and the record supporting it
- Transaction fee amount, fee currency, and how the fee was paid
- Exchange or wallet, transaction identifier, and filename or location of the supporting record
- Any correction or reconciliation note
The IRS specifies the asset, date and time, units, fair market value, and basis fields for tax calculations. Network identifiers and evidence-location notes are useful organizational additions, not a separate IRS checklist.

How to preserve records for each kind of event
Purchases and other acquisitions
For each purchase, save the confirmation or statement showing when you acquired the asset and how many units you received. Record the U.S.-dollar acquisition value and the associated acquisition costs. The 2025 Form 8949 instructions say digital-asset basis is acquisition cost, including transaction fees, commissions, transfer taxes, and other acquisition costs. Check the instructions for the tax year you are filing, since form instructions are year-specific.

Sales, exchanges, and other dispositions
For each disposal, record its date and time, units disposed of, gross proceeds or fair market value in U.S. dollars, basis of the units, and related charges. Retain the trade confirmation or other record used to calculate those figures. Compare your ledger with broker forms and resolve missing entries or discrepancies before filing.

Transfers between accounts or wallets
Preserve records of transfers as part of the transaction history. Note the assets and units, date and time, sending and receiving accounts or wallets, transaction identifier, and any fee. These details help document what moved and distinguish a transfer record from a sale or exchange in your own ledger. The IRS requires sufficient supporting records but does not prescribe a particular transfer-tracking format.

Fees, including fees paid in crypto
Record the amount and currency of each fee, what service it paid for, and how it was settled. If you pay a transaction-service fee using digital assets, the crypto used or withheld for the service may itself be a disposition. IRS FAQ 97 says that such a payment can recognize gain or loss on the crypto disposed of; the amount paid may also qualify as a digital-asset transaction cost. Preserve enough information to record both aspects rather than treating a crypto-paid fee as only a line-item expense.
How to gather and reconcile the evidence
- Collect the source records. Download or preserve exchange and broker exports, trade confirmations, account statements, wallet transaction histories, receipts for crypto-funded purchases, and fee records. Keep evidence supporting both what happened and the dollar values used.
- Combine records across platforms. Check each exchange, broker, and self-custody wallet separately. Do not assume one platform’s export includes activity recorded elsewhere.
- Enter each event and connect it to evidence. Add the event to your ledger and retain its transaction identifier or a clear reference to the supporting file.
- Reconcile the ledger against statements and forms. Compare dates, units, proceeds, fees, and basis. Investigate omissions and mismatches before preparing the return.
- Keep the records together for the return year. Retain the source documents and ledger used to support the reported figures so the calculations can be reconstructed later.
What Form 1099-DA does—and does not—establish
The IRS is phasing in digital-asset broker reporting. Brokers must report gross proceeds for covered transactions on or after January 1, 2025, and basis reporting begins for certain covered transactions on or after January 1, 2026. In a January 28, 2026 reminder, the IRS said brokers had to furnish 2025 Form 1099-DA statements by February 17, 2026, and that most of those statements would not include basis.
Use the form you receive as one reconciliation source, not as a complete history of your holdings. A missing basis figure does not remove the need to determine and report applicable income, gain, or loss. Check the instructions for the relevant tax year and the details of the individual form.
Keep income receipts separate from capital-asset disposals
Crypto received as wages, contractor pay, staking or mining income, rewards, or business receipts may need records and forms beyond capital-gains reporting. Preserve the amount received, date and time, U.S.-dollar fair market value, and records identifying the nature of the payment. The applicable tax treatment depends on the event; complex situations may warrant advice from a qualified tax professional.
