You do not need to erase your drive to install a Windows 11 update. Free enough space for the update on your PC, starting with Windows’ built-in cleanup tools and reviewing what each one will remove. Microsoft says feature updates typically need 6 GB–11 GB or more free, while quality updates typically need 2 GB–3 GB or more; the amount varies by update and device, so use the Windows Update prompt on your PC as your guide. Check how much space Windows needs
Open Settings > System > Storage to see how the system drive is being used. Windows groups storage into categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and System & reserved, which can help you spot where space is going. Microsoft’s Storage settings guidance.

Update requirements are not fixed: optional features and languages, other updates, and system-file sizes can affect the amount needed. The free-space figure or action shown by Windows Update is more relevant to your device than a general estimate.

- Go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations.
- Review the categories, including Temporary files, Large or unused files, Files synced to the cloud, and Unused apps. Windows shows estimated savings.
- Select only files or apps you recognize and intend to remove, then follow the on-screen cleanup instructions. Microsoft documents these recommendations for freeing update space.
Pay particular attention to any entry for a previous Windows installation. Deleting it can free space, but removes the option to return to that previous version. Keep it if you may need to roll back; do not treat it as routine first-step cleanup. Microsoft explains the rollback trade-off.

Use Storage Sense only with its settings understood
Open Settings > System > Storage and turn on or configure Storage Sense. It can automatically remove temporary files and manage Recycle Bin contents according to its rules. Review its configuration before relying on it: by default, it does not clean Downloads or cloud content, and it manages the system drive. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guide.
Move or remove files you have reviewed
If the built-in recommendations do not free enough room, check large personal files in Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads. Delete files you no longer want, or move files you want to keep to another drive. Before deleting a local copy, open the copy on the other drive to confirm it transferred successfully. You can also uninstall apps you no longer use. Optional Windows features are another possible source of storage use; their presence, along with installed languages, can affect feature-update space requirements. Remove only apps or features you are comfortable losing.
Use external storage if Windows offers it
If Windows Update reports insufficient space, it may offer a Fix issues route that uses external storage. Microsoft’s documented flow calls for an external device with at least 10 GB free and an internet connection. Keep the device connected and follow the instructions Windows displays; the system drive may still need additional free space. Return to Windows Update and follow its prompt
After cleanup, go back to Windows Update and retry the update or follow the specific action it offers. If it still reports low space, use that message to decide whether more system-drive space is needed or whether the external-storage option is available. The typical ranges Microsoft gives—6 GB–11 GB or more for feature updates and 2 GB–3 GB or more for quality updates—are not guaranteed minimums for every Windows 11 PC.
