To check for a regular Android update, open Settings > System > Software update and follow the on-screen steps. To see which Android version is installed, use Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Android version. These are separate screens. Android OS beta enrollment is a separate process—and the Google beta route described here is for supported Pixel devices, not every Android phone.
How do I check for Android beta updates?
First decide whether you want the latest public update or an early test release. If you want a public update, use your device’s normal software-update screen. For the Android OS beta covered here, Google’s Android Beta for Pixel program is the enrollment route; eligibility depends on the exact Pixel model and active release.

Check eligibility and enroll in the Pixel beta
- Sign in to the Google account associated with the Pixel you want to enroll.
- Open Google’s Android 17 QPR 1 beta guide and check its supported-device list. The guide reviewed for this article lists Pixel models from the Pixel 6 series through Pixel 10 series, plus Pixel Tablet. That list is specific to this release; check the live guide because eligibility can change.
- Use the Android Beta for Pixel program page to enroll the eligible device, then install the offered update through the phone’s software-update screen.
When enrolled, a device is offered over-the-air beta updates during the release cycle unless you opt out earlier. Google recommends making a backup before enrolling. Its Android Developers guide says: “In most cases, you don’t need to do a full reset of your data to move to the Android 17 QPR 1 Beta, but it’s recommended that you back up data before enrolling your device.”

- Stay on stable if you mainly want a public update, rely on your phone, or cannot risk troubleshooting or restoring data.
- Consider beta if you have a supported Pixel, want to try changes before general release, and can tolerate bugs and possible data-loss paths.
- Check the model first. Beta eligibility is tied to the release and device; having a Pixel does not guarantee that every model qualifies.
The Android 17 QPR 1 guide describes four stable releases in that cycle: the platform release followed by three Quarterly Platform Releases. This is Google’s stated schedule for that release cycle, not a promise about future cycles.

How do I manage system update settings?
Check installed version and update status
To view Android version, security update, and build details, open Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Android version. To check for an update, open Settings > System > Software update and follow the prompts. On Pixel, the relevant menu may instead be labeled Software updates or System update. Menu names vary by device, Android version, and language; Google’s Android update instructions give the general paths.
Understand when an update should arrive
Update timing varies by manufacturer, device, and carrier. Pixel updates roll out gradually, depend on device and carrier, and can take a few weeks to reach a phone. Rechecking does not guarantee that an update will become available immediately. For a non-Pixel phone, consult its manufacturer or carrier about the model’s schedule; the Pixel beta enrollment route does not apply to it.

Google’s current Pixel support page says Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of updates from first availability on the Google Store in the US, including OS and security updates. Listed Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 family phones receive five years. Those are support periods, not guarantees that a model is eligible for every beta. Check the Pixel update support details and the active beta device list separately.
How do I leave the Android beta?
Leaving safely depends on which update you install and when you opt out. Google says that after applying a stable release update, users can opt out of future beta updates without a data wipe for a limited period—until the next beta update is applied. Do not assume that opting out at any time preserves data. If you flash between production and beta builds, a full device reset may be required and can erase user data. Read Google’s beta exit guidance before opting out; its Pixel OTA image documentation explains the advanced flashing route and reset risk. Flashing is not necessary for a normal update check or standard beta enrollment.

No. Android OS beta enrollment changes the operating-system release offered to an eligible device. Google documents separate beta controls for System services under Settings > profile > All services > Privacy & security > System services. Use those controls to manage that services beta; they do not enroll the phone in the Android OS beta. See Google’s System services settings instructions.
