To free space on a Fire tablet, open Settings > Storage and check whether internal storage or the microSD card is full. Then archive eligible content, remove downloads or apps you no longer need, or troubleshoot the specific app or card. A microSD card will not solve app-install space problems on Fire OS 6 and later, which cannot install apps or games to the card.
Find out which storage is full
Open Settings > Storage. Check the available space and the categories shown for internal storage and, if present, SD card storage. This first check matters: freeing internal space will not fix a full card, and adding a card does not expand the space available for app installations on Fire OS 6 and later.

Menu names and archive options vary by Fire OS version and tablet generation. Use the path that matches your device rather than assuming every Fire tablet has the same controls.
Free internal space by archiving content
Amazon says purchased content is saved to your account’s Cloud. Removing an eligible local copy from the tablet does not delete the purchase from your account; you can download it again when needed.

Use Auto Archive if it suits you
Auto Archive is optional. Amazon says it applies to non-Amazon apps that have not been used frequently in the past 60 days. Eligible apps are archived and removed from the home screen. Amazon provides a way to view archived apps and reinstall them, but check the archive list before relying on the feature to preserve a particular app’s local state.
Archive manually
- Fire OS 7: Open Settings > Storage, then choose Archive Now under Free Up Space.
- Fire OS 8: Open Settings > Storage > Internal Storage, then choose Archive Now or Free Up Space.

Remove downloads and apps you no longer need
After archiving, review locally stored videos, books, music, downloads, and apps. Delete only items you are willing to remove from the device; confirm whether anything important is synced or available to download again before deleting it. Recheck Settings > Storage afterward to see whether the space you needed is available.

If one app is unusually large or misbehaving, try clearing its cache first. Clearing an app’s data or storage is a separate action and may remove local settings, saved files, or sign-in information. Choose the specific app and understand what may be lost before proceeding.

8th Generation and newer
Amazon’s instructions use this route: Settings > Apps & Notifications > Manage All Applications or See all apps > select the app > Storage. Choose Clear Cache to remove cached files. The same screen may offer Clear Data or Clear Storage; use that only if you are prepared to remove the app’s locally stored data.
4th–7th Generation
Amazon’s older-device route is Settings > Apps & Games > Manage All Applications > select the app, then choose Clear Cache or Clear Data. The labels and available controls can differ by model.

A microSD card can add room for supported content, but Amazon says Fire tablets running Fire OS 6 and higher cannot install apps and games to microSD. If an app installation fails because internal storage is low, clear internal space instead of expecting the card to fix it.

These are Amazon’s compatibility ceilings, not a recommendation to buy the largest card. Identify your tablet’s generation and the type of content you want to store before choosing a card. Free space on a card
Open Settings > Storage, select the relevant category under SD Card Storage, and use Storage Manager to clean up content or move items to internal storage. If internal storage is the constrained location, moving items there will not help; remove or archive content from the full location instead.
Check a card that is not recognized or usable
- Confirm the tablet generation’s capacity limit and the card’s speed class.
- Check that the card is inserted correctly. If the tablet offers an unmount option, unmount it before removing and reinserting it.
- Test the card in another compatible device, or test the tablet with another card, to help isolate whether the problem follows the card.
- Remember that Fire OS 6 and later do not support installing apps or games to microSD.

What to do when “System” or another category appears full
If Settings shows high usage under System or another category you cannot identify, the displayed category alone does not establish what is consuming space or guarantee that a particular cache can be safely cleared. Avoid deleting unfamiliar system files or following instructions to remove hidden data without device-specific guidance.
As basic checks, restart the tablet and look for an update under Settings > Device Options > System Update. Amazon Staff suggested these steps in response to one Fire Max 11 forum report; that individual response does not establish a universal cause or fix. For app-specific storage, use the app cache and data steps above.

A safe order for fixing a storage error
- Open Settings > Storage and identify whether internal storage or SD card storage is full.
- If the card is full, use SD Card Storage and Storage Manager to clean up or move supported content.
- If internal storage is full, use Auto Archive if appropriate, or manually archive eligible content using the path for your Fire OS version.
- Remove local downloads or apps you no longer need. For one app’s problem, clear its cache first; clear its data only after considering the local information that may be removed.
- If the card itself is failing, check its capacity and speed, reseat it safely, and test it in another device or try another card.
- If unexplained system usage remains, restart and check for a system update rather than assuming a particular hidden cache is responsible.
