You can erase the personal data on a smartphone without physically damaging it, but a factory reset is not a way to destroy the phone’s hardware. If you own the device and are preparing to sell, give away, or recycle it, back up what you need and use its built-in erase process.
Before you erase the phone
- Back up or transfer anything you want to keep. A reset removes data stored on the device. Data already backed up to a cloud account may remain there and, in some cases, be restored to a device later.
- Do not delete synced items manually as a substitute for resetting. Apple warns that manually deleting synced content can remove it from iCloud and other connected devices. Erasing the iPhone through its built-in process removes device content without deleting the content stored in iCloud. Apple’s transfer and erase guidance explains the distinction.
- Have your account credentials and screen-lock details available. You may need them to authorize a reset or set up the device afterward.
- Consider the mobile-service consequences. On an iPhone with an eSIM, choose deliberately whether to keep or delete the eSIM. Deleting it may mean contacting your carrier to reactivate service.
How to erase an iPhone
- Back up the iPhone and transfer any information you want to keep.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings, then follow the prompts. The phone may ask for its passcode or your Apple Account password.
- If prompted about an eSIM, choose whether to keep or delete it based on whether you will continue using the mobile plan on this phone.
Apple says erasing the iPhone turns off Find My and Activation Lock. Follow the current on-screen instructions, since prompts and menu wording can vary. See Apple’s transfer and erase instructions or its factory-reset guidance.

How to factory-reset an Android phone
- Back up anything you want to keep, and confirm that you know the Google Account password and the phone’s screen-lock credentials.
- Use the reset instructions for your specific phone model and Android version. Menu names and steps vary by manufacturer; Google recommends consulting the device maker’s directions.
- Start the factory reset and follow the prompts. Google says a reset can take up to an hour; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed completion time.
A factory reset removes data stored on the phone, while data saved in a Google Account may be restorable. Apps and their data are uninstalled from the device. Some steps in Google’s general instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. Check Google’s Android reset guidance and your manufacturer’s current instructions for your model.
What a reset does—and does not do
A reset is intended to remove personal data from the phone and return it to a setup state; it is not a supported method of destroying or disabling hardware. Nor does resetting necessarily delete cloud backups or remove every account-related restriction. Apple distinguishes Erase All Content and Settings from Reset All Settings: the latter changes settings but does not delete photos, messages, apps, or documents. For a phone you plan to sell or give away, Apple directs owners to erase all content and settings. Apple explains the reset options here.

Can you erase a phone remotely?
Android
Google’s Find Hub remote erase requires the phone to be powered on, connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi, signed in to a Google Account, configured with Find Hub, and visible on Google Play. If the phone is offline, a remote request cannot erase it until it meets the service’s requirements. See Google’s Find Hub instructions.
iPhone
If you no longer have the iPhone, Apple provides an erase option through Find Devices. If the phone is offline, a remote erase remains pending and starts when it reconnects. Apple’s instructions also distinguish erasing the phone from removing it from your account; for a device already sold or given away, follow the relevant steps to erase it and then select Remove This Device. See Apple’s Find My guidance.

Not necessarily. Apple says Activation Lock is associated with Find My and can continue to deter reactivation after a remote erase. A buyer should not accept an iPhone that remains linked to the previous owner’s account. The owner should complete the account-removal steps before transferring it; Apple’s Activation Lock guidance describes how the lock works.
For Android, follow the manufacturer’s transfer guidance and make sure you can complete the reset and account setup steps for that specific model. Google recommends clearing data and resetting a phone before recycling, donating, or trading it in, and advises checking with the manufacturer and mobile operator for model-specific directions. Google’s preparation guidance covers those steps.
