The ASRock Rack SORANOD8-2L2T is a server-first ATX-like motherboard for one AMD EPYC 8005 or 8004 processor. Its strongest case is for a storage server or appliance that can use five PCIe slots, flexible SATA routing, onboard 10GbE and 1GbE, and IPMI remote management. Before buying, check two less conventional requirements: the board measures 12 × 10 inches, wider than standard ATX, and uses a server-style power arrangement.
What the SORANOD8-2L2T is—and who it suits
ASRock Rack lists the SORANOD8-2L2T as a single-socket SP6 board for AMD EPYC 8005 and 8004 processors. The manufacturer specifies a 12 × 10-inch board, eight DDR5 DIMM slots, five PCIe slots, two PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 sockets, two MCIO connectors, four Ethernet ports, and IPMI. Ryan Smith’s ServeTheHome review, published September 24, 2026, describes the board as an update to the earlier SP6 approach, with EPYC 8005 support and changed connectivity. The review sees its appeal in the combination of PCIe Gen5 expansion, storage flexibility, onboard networking, and remote management—not in a conventional desktop-style feature set. These are review findings, not independent testing for this article.

Memory: eight slots, capacity focus
The manufacturer specifies eight 288-pin slots supporting registered DDR5 RDIMM and RDIMM-3DS modules. ServeTheHome reports a maximum of 2TB and a DDR5-5200 ceiling for its board configuration summary. Those figures describe the review’s summary; the supported memory speed and capacity for a particular build depend on the processor and DIMM population.
#1 Best Overall
- EXACT-MATCH UPGRADE — 32GB DDR5-5600 (PC5-44800), 1Rx4 Registered ECC, 1.1V, CL46, 288-pin. The precise rank, voltage, and timing your system's memory controller expects, so it is recognized at full capacity and runs at its rated speed.
- VERIFIED FITMENT — Compatible with the ASRock Rack SORANOD8-2L2T Motherboard. The 288-pin Registered (RDIMM) form factor this motherboard requires — not a UDIMM, LRDIMM or SODIMM. Spec-matched to the board's memory-population rules.
- ENTERPRISE STABILITY — Registered (buffered) architecture offloads the memory controller so every slot runs fully populated at full capacity, while ECC catches and corrects single-bit errors on the fly — stopping silent data corruption and unplanned reboots before they reach production.
- CHECK YOUR CONFIG — Server and motherboard memory support varies by model and processor. Consult your system manual for supported capacities, approved DIMM population order, and installation steps before purchase.
- LIFETIME SUPPORT — Backed by a lifetime replacement warranty and free US-based technical support. Researched, matched, and compatibility-tested by NEMIX RAM, a US-based server memory specialist since 1993, and backed by a lifetime warranty.
ServeTheHome characterizes the layout as an unusual 2DPC-like arrangement across SP6’s six memory channels: two channels have positions for a second DIMM. Its trade-off is capacity versus speed compared with a 1DPC board, rather than eight equivalent single-DIMM-per-channel positions. Check ASRock Rack’s current CPU support information and memory QVL for the exact processor, DIMM type, capacity, and population before ordering.
Expansion and storage: plan the routing, not just the slot count
ServeTheHome lists four PCIe Gen5 x16 slots and one open-ended Gen5 x8 slot. The manufacturer’s summary confirms five PCIe slots, but the exact lane routing and configuration matter when matching cards and storage.

NVMe and PCIe expansion
Two M.2 sockets accept 22110 or 2280 drives and run at PCIe 5.0 x4, according to the review. The five-slot layout gives room for other expansion cards, but builders should account for the intended lane configuration and physical fit of their cards when laying out a system.
MCIO and SATA options
The two MCIO x8 connectors can carry PCIe Gen5 x8 or be configured for eight SATA 6Gbps connections apiece. In SATA mode, that provides up to 16 SATA connections through the MCIO connectors. The top PCIe slot can also be routed to 16 SATA connections with the separate ASRock Rack 1U2G-RB1U2SL-G4 riser. These are configurable alternatives, not a promise that every routing option is active simultaneously; verify the required settings, cabling, and riser support for the intended setup.

This flexibility makes the board potentially useful for systems balancing NVMe devices, add-in cards, and SATA drive bays. Decide the desired mix first: routing lanes to SATA changes what those connections can serve as, and the top-slot SATA approach requires a specific riser.
Networking and remote management
The board has two 10GbE RJ45 ports and two 1GbE RJ45 ports, plus a dedicated IPMI port. ServeTheHome identifies Intel X710-AT2 silicon for 10GbE, Intel i210 controllers for 1GbE, and an ASPEED AST2600 BMC. Integrated multi-speed Ethernet can reduce the need for network add-in cards in a server that needs both faster links and separate 1GbE connectivity.

ServeTheHome describes an HTML5 IPMI interface with remote media mounting and says the interface appears to be based on MegaRAC SP-X. Those are observations about the reviewed software interface, not a manufacturer guarantee about future firmware or every feature. The manufacturer’s product page identifies IPMI remote management.
Chassis, power, and everyday connectivity checks
Confirm the board fits
At 12 × 10 inches, the board is wider than standard ATX. ServeTheHome warns that this can prevent installation in cases that support standard ATX and no larger. Check the case maker’s explicit motherboard dimensions and standoff layout rather than relying on an “ATX compatible” label alone.

Check the power connectors and package
The review describes three ATX12V power connectors and a 4-pin micro-fit signaling connector in place of the usual 24-pin ATX motherboard connector. It says an adapter for a conventional ATX PSU is included, but calls the arrangement a sourcing and convenience drawback for some builders. Confirm the PSU connector requirements and included adapter against the current package documentation before purchase.
Expect a server-oriented rear panel
ServeTheHome notes two rear USB-A ports, a header for two additional front USB ports, VGA output from the BMC, and six 6-pin fan headers. A workstation user who needs more USB connectivity may need a PCIe USB card. The layout favors server functions—management, networking, and fan connections—over a desktop-style assortment of ports.
What the review does—and does not—establish about performance
ServeTheHome’s review says comparative benchmark testing put the ASRock Rack platform in a similar performance range to an HPE ProLiant in the configurations tested. Its SPEC CPU2026 figures are estimates produced with LLVM 22 and -O3; the review explicitly says they are not comparable to results on the official SPEC website. The published material summarized here provides no chart values to quote, so it does not support a numerical performance advantage or a general ranking.

The review also highlights lower platform power relative to larger sockets as part of the board’s appeal. That is the reviewer’s platform-level assessment, not a measured power figure for every processor, memory population, or system configuration.
Buying decision: match the board to the build
| Build priority | How this board fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Storage capacity and routing | Two configurable MCIO connectors and a SATA-routable top slot offer multiple ways to connect drives. | Whether the selected routing, cables, and optional riser support the intended drive count. |
| Memory capacity | Eight RDIMM/RDIMM-3DS slots; ServeTheHome reports up to 2TB. | Processor-specific QVL, DIMM population, and resulting supported speed. |
| PCIe and NVMe expansion | Five slots and two PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 sockets. | Card size, slot placement, and lane needs alongside storage routing. |
| Integrated networking and management | Two 10GbE, two 1GbE, and IPMI. | Whether these ports and management functions meet the network design and firmware needs. |
| Standard tower compatibility | The board is 12 × 10 inches, not standard ATX width. | Case dimensions and standoff layout. |
| Conventional PSU convenience | Server-style power connections differ from a typical 24-pin motherboard setup. | PSU connectors and the current package’s adapter documentation. |
For a storage-focused EPYC SP6 server, its mix of PCIe Gen5, configurable SATA paths, Ethernet, and IPMI is compelling on paper. For a workstation or standard tower build, the unusual dimensions, power connectors, and sparse USB deserve equal weight with the expansion specifications.
