If a PlayStation Plus Catalog game will not install because your PS5 is full, open Settings > Storage first. The quickest reversible fix is deleting an installed game you no longer play; Sony says deleted purchases remain in your library and can be downloaded again. If the game offers Customize, remove unused add-ons or completed portions instead. You can also move games to USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD, or stream a supported Catalog title without installing it. Upload the relevant save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage before deleting or moving anything.
Start by finding what is using the space
On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage. The Storage screen separates console usage into categories such as games and apps, media, and saved data. Check the free-space figure and identify the category that can realistically be reduced. A nearly full console may need more than the size of the new game because installations can require temporary working space during downloading and copying.

Do not begin by deleting random files from the home screen. The Storage menu gives you a complete list and exposes the controls for partial removal, deletion, and moving data.
Recommended Free Tools
There is no single official “average game size” that can reliably predict how much room a Catalog title needs. Install size varies by game, updates, language packs, expansions, and platform version. Use the title’s displayed requirement and the free-space figure in Storage, then leave a margin rather than trying to match the number exactly.

Protect your saves before changing game data
Game installations and save files are separate. Deleting an installation does not normally erase the progress stored in saved data, but you should still upload the save before making changes, especially if you have not synchronized recently or are moving several games at once.
PlayStation Plus cloud storage supports up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current support documentation. Use the PS5’s saved-data upload controls to send the game’s latest save to cloud storage, then confirm that the upload has completed. If you use more than one console, verify that the save you upload is the newest local version.
Cloud storage is a safety measure, not extra room for game installations. It protects progress while the game itself is deleted, archived, or copied to another storage device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a game with separate PS4 and PS5 versions, check which version contains the progress you need. Uploading the wrong saved-data category will not preserve the other version’s save. If you are unsure, keep the local save until the replacement installation has launched and the expected progress is visible.
Choose the least disruptive way to make room
| Option | Immediate space recovered | What happens when you play later | Can a PS5 game launch there? | Hardware or network requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete an installed game | The full installation size | Download it again from your library; a Catalog title also needs an eligible membership and continued title availability | Not while deleted | No hardware; downloading later uses your internet connection |
| Customize a game | Only the add-ons or finished portions you select | Reinstall the removed component if you need it | Yes, for the portions still installed | Only games that expose Sony’s partial-data controls |
| USB extended storage | Frees the internal SSD space occupied by moved games | Copy a PS5 game back before playing; PS4 games can run from the USB drive | PS4 games: yes. PS5 games: no, not directly from USB | Compatible SuperSpeed USB drive, 250 GB to 8 TB |
| M.2 SSD | Adds usable console storage instead of removing a game | Play from the added storage after a compatible installation | Yes, for compatible PS5 and PS4 games | Drive must meet Sony’s current performance, size, heatsink, and installation requirements |
| Stream a Catalog game | Uses no local game-installation space | Start streaming again when the title and membership are eligible | Not applicable; the game runs as a stream | Supported title, eligible plan, and stable broadband; at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p according to Sony |
Every option can affect your ability to resume immediately if you have not protected your save. Upload the save first, regardless of which storage method you choose.
The table also highlights the main trade-off: deletion gives the most immediate relief with no hardware, while moving preserves the installation but introduces copying or expansion requirements. Streaming avoids installation entirely, but it exchanges storage dependence for broadband and service availability.
Delete a game and download it again later
When deletion is the best choice
Delete an installed game when you need space immediately and do not expect to play it during the next few minutes. This recovers the entire installation without buying the game again. Sony’s PS5 storage guidance states: “Don’t worry, you won’t lose access to any deleted games or applications — you can re-download your purchases from your game library whenever you like.”
That reassurance applies to purchases. For a PlayStation Plus Catalog title, downloading it again also depends on the game remaining in the Catalog and your membership being eligible when you return to it. Catalog availability and membership benefits can change, so do not treat a deleted Catalog installation as permanently reserved.

Deletion steps
- Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select the game or games you no longer need installed.
- Choose Delete and confirm.
- Return to the PlayStation Plus area, open Benefits > Game Catalog, select the eligible title, and choose Download when you are ready to reinstall it.
Deleting a game removes its installation files, patches, and locally installed content. It does not turn a purchase into a new charge, and it does not remove the title from your game library.
Deleting several games at once is efficient, but it also increases the chance of removing a title you still need. Review each selection in the Storage list and keep the cloud-upload confirmation for every game whose progress matters.
Use Customize to remove only what you do not need
Some PS5 games expose a Customize control in the Games and Apps storage list. Depending on the title, this can let you remove unused add-ons, language packs, multiplayer components, or portions of a campaign you have finished without deleting the base installation.
Partial-cleanup steps
- Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select the game and look for Customize.
- Review the listed add-ons or removable portions and select only the items you no longer need.
- Confirm the removal, then check the free-space figure before starting the new download.
Customize is not available for every game. If the control is absent, the title does not expose partial-data choices through that screen; use deletion or move the installation instead. Removing a component may make a mode, language, or expansion unavailable until that component is downloaded again.
Partial cleanup is especially useful when the base game is still your current multiplayer title but a finished campaign, extra language, or unused expansion is taking space. Treat each listed component as optional only after checking what it contains; the control reflects what that particular game allows, not a universal PS5 rule.
Move games instead of deleting them
Moving is useful when you want to keep a large installation but need the internal SSD for a new Catalog game. The PS5 provides a Move Games and Apps control for transferring titles between console storage and compatible expanded storage.
USB extended storage
Sony specifies a compatible SuperSpeed USB extended-storage drive with a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. Connect the drive directly to the PS5, format it as extended storage when prompted, and use Move Games and Apps from the storage controls to transfer selected games.
- PS4 games: compatible PS4 titles can run directly from USB extended storage.
- PS5 games: the files can be stored on USB, but the game must be copied back to the PS5’s internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before it can be played.
- Capacity planning: the advertised 250 GB–8 TB range is the supported drive-capacity range, not a promise that every model in that range meets every other compatibility requirement.
USB storage is therefore an archive and transfer solution for PS5 games, not a way to launch them directly. It is practical when you have several games you want to retain and can tolerate copying one back before play.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Moving a game does not create a second playable copy. The transfer changes where the installation is stored, so check the destination and wait for the move to finish before disconnecting the drive. Keep the drive connected when you want to launch a PS4 game from it, and use the PS5’s safe-removal controls before unplugging it.
M.2 SSD expansion
A compatible M.2 NVMe SSD adds internal-style storage. Sony says M.2 storage can download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, subject to its current performance, physical-size, heatsink, and installation requirements.
Check Sony’s current M.2 compatibility requirements before buying or installing a drive. A drive that fits the connector but misses the required read performance, dimensions, or heatsink clearance is not a safe assumption. Installation also requires opening the expansion-bay cover and securing the module correctly; follow the PS5 model-specific instructions rather than forcing a drive into place.

Choose M.2 expansion when you frequently install PS5 games and want them playable without copying back and forth. Choose USB extended storage when lower-complexity archiving is more important than launching PS5 games from the drive.
Both expansion choices require an upfront hardware purchase, and neither removes the need to protect saves. USB capacity is useful for retaining a library, while M.2 capacity is useful for keeping PS5 titles ready to launch. Compare the drive’s supported capacity, compatibility requirements, installation effort, and the amount of copying you are willing to tolerate rather than choosing by capacity alone.
Stream a supported Catalog title instead of installing it
Streaming avoids local installation altogether, but it is not available for every Catalog game or every membership. On a supported title with an eligible plan, select Stream rather than Download from the game’s PlayStation Plus listing.
Sony’s current Game Catalog support documentation lists 5 Mbps minimum broadband. Sony lists 15 Mbps for 1080p. Those figures describe the connection requirement; real-world stability can still be affected by Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, latency, and service availability.

Streaming trades storage use for a continuing broadband requirement. A downloaded copy is available offline after installation; a stream depends on the network each time you play.

If several people share the connection, the listed minimum is not a guarantee of a stable session. Pause other heavy network activity where possible, use a reliable connection, and regard the 1080p figure as Sony’s stated target rather than a promise that every network will deliver identical quality.
A complete workflow for installing the new game
- Measure the problem. Open Settings > Storage and note the free space and the category consuming it.
- Secure progress. Upload the saves for any game you may delete or move to PlayStation Plus cloud storage. The service supports up to 100 GB of PS5 saves and 100 GB of PS4 saves.
- Look for partial removal. In Games and Apps, select a game with Customize and remove unused add-ons or completed portions.
- Delete only if necessary. Use Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps > Delete for a game you can download again later.
- Move retained installations. Use Move Games and Apps to transfer games to USB extended storage or M.2 storage. Remember that PS5 games on USB must be copied back before play.
- Install or stream. Open PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Game Catalog, select the eligible title, then choose Download or, when offered, Stream.
- Verify the result. Return to Storage and confirm that the console has enough free space for the installation and any temporary download work.
If the download still fails, repeat the Storage check after the move or deletion has completed. A transfer that is still in progress may not have released its source space, and saved data or media may account for more than expected. Do not assume that a title’s listed install size is the only space the console needs during the operation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and what they mean
The new game still will not install after deleting another title
Recheck Settings > Storage rather than relying on the home screen’s free-space indicator. Another game, media file, or saved-data category may be consuming the remaining space. If you moved a game instead of deleting it, confirm that the transfer completed and that the internal-storage figure changed.
Customize is missing
Only games that provide removable components expose this control. Use the standard delete command or move the full installation to expanded storage.
A PS5 game on USB will not start
This is expected behavior. USB extended storage can retain PS5 game files, but PS5 games must be copied to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before launching.
The Stream button is unavailable
Streaming requires all of the relevant conditions: the specific title must support it, your membership must be eligible, and the service must be available for your account and region. If any condition fails, download the game after freeing space or move another installation to expanded storage.
Progress appears missing after reinstalling
Reinstalling the game does not recreate a save that was never uploaded or otherwise preserved. Use the PS5 saved-data controls to confirm that the correct cloud save exists before deleting future installations, then restore or synchronize it when the game is installed again.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The game returned to the Catalog but cannot be downloaded
Confirm that the membership associated with the Catalog benefit is active and that the title is still available for your account and region. A deleted installation does not guarantee permanent Catalog access; availability and membership benefits can change.

The expansion drive is not accepted
Check that a USB drive is a compatible SuperSpeed model within Sony’s 250 GB–8 TB range, or that an M.2 SSD meets the current performance, physical-size, heatsink, and installation requirements. Capacity alone does not establish compatibility.
Which approach fits your situation?
- You need space right now and rarely replay the old game: upload its save, then delete it.
- You finished a campaign but want to keep the multiplayer installation: use Customize if the game exposes removable portions.
- You have a large library and a reliable archive drive: move games to a compatible 250 GB–8 TB USB extended-storage drive.
- You install PS5 games constantly: a compatible M.2 SSD is the expanded-storage option that can launch PS5 games directly.
- You have limited free space but sufficient broadband: stream the title when the Stream option appears for your plan and the game.
What to remember
Use Settings > Storage as the starting point, upload saves before making changes, and prefer the smallest intervention that solves the problem. Delete an installation when you can download it later, use Customize when only part of a game is unnecessary, move retained games to expanded storage, or stream a supported Catalog title. USB storage is suitable for storing PS5 games but not launching them; a compatible M.2 SSD can both store and launch them. Streaming starts at Sony’s stated 5 Mbps minimum, with 15 Mbps listed for 1080p.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete a PlayStation Plus Catalog game and download it later?
Yes, if the title is still in the Catalog and your membership remains eligible. Deleting the installation removes local files, not your general library access, but Catalog availability can change.

Game installations and saved data are separate. Upload the latest save to PlayStation Plus cloud storage first; Sony’s current limits are 100 GB for PS5 saves and 100 GB for PS4 saves.
Can I remove only an add-on or campaign portion?
Some games show Customize under Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps. Use it to remove listed add-ons or finished portions. Games without that control require full deletion or moving.
Can PS5 games run from a USB extended-storage drive?
No. PS5 games may be stored on compatible USB extended storage, but they must be copied to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before playing. Compatible PS4 games can run directly from USB.
What USB drive size does Sony support?
Sony specifies a compatible SuperSpeed USB extended-storage drive from 250 GB to 8 TB. The capacity range does not replace the other compatibility requirements.

Yes. A compatible M.2 NVMe SSD can download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games, provided it meets Sony’s current performance, dimensions, heatsink, and installation requirements.
Why can’t I stream a Catalog game?
Streaming depends on the specific title, your PlayStation Plus plan, and service availability for your account and region. When supported, Sony lists 5 Mbps minimum broadband and 15 Mbps for 1080p.
Do I need extra free space beyond the game’s displayed size?
Leave a margin. PS5 installations can require temporary working space while downloading and copying, and other games, media, or saved data may consume room that is not obvious from the home screen.
The Bottom Line
Check Settings > Storage, upload your saves, then use the least disruptive fix: Customize removable content, delete a game you can download again, move it to USB or M.2 storage, or stream a supported Catalog title. USB stores PS5 games but cannot launch them; a compatible M.2 SSD can. Streaming requires an eligible title and plan plus Sony’s stated 5 Mbps minimum connection.
