The fastest way to prepare for GTA 6 is to check free space now, remove games you can re-download, and move games you want to keep onto the right kind of expansion storage. Rockstar’s current support listing confirms Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but does not state the game’s final download or installed size. Check the PlayStation or Microsoft Store listing again before pre-loading and keep additional headroom beyond its requirement.
Start with a storage audit
Do not begin by deleting random games. First record the console’s available space, then identify what is consuming it. A large install may need room for the download package, installation process, updates and temporary files, so the number shown in a store listing should not be treated as a target with zero margin.

The free-space figure shown by a store may describe a download or an installed requirement, while the console also needs working room to unpack files, verify them and apply launch-day patches. No final GTA VI byte-size figure is published in Rockstar’s cited platform information, so do not reserve a supposedly exact number based on rumors or estimates. When the PlayStation or Microsoft listing shows a requirement, leave extra capacity rather than filling the drive to that exact line.

Decide whether you need an archive or playable expansion
There are two different goals. Archiving keeps an installation available so you can copy it back later, while playable expansion lets you launch supported current-generation games directly from the added storage. Deleting costs nothing but requires a future download. A USB archive can save bandwidth and time compared with downloading again, but PS5 games still have to be copied back before play. An M.2 SSD for PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card costs more, yet keeps a larger ready-to-play library.
PS5: delete games you can download again
Find the largest installs
- Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
- Select Storage.
- Choose Console Storage, then Games and Apps.
- Sort the list by size and select titles you no longer need immediately.
- Choose Delete and confirm.
Deleting an installed game does not cancel a purchase. Sony says a purchased game or application can be downloaded again from the game library. This makes deletion the cheapest way to create room, although you will need a later download before playing that title again.

Some games expose individual components under the Games and Apps management screen. Moving a PS5 game back is normally faster than downloading it again, but it still takes time and requires the drive to be connected. Keep the drive connected if you expect to rotate several archived games, and label multiple drives so you know which library each contains.
USB archive pitfalls
Do not unplug the drive while a move is in progress or while the console is using it. A drive configured as PS5 extended storage is not a general-purpose media disk afterward, and formatting it removes existing files. If the console asks you to format a drive that contains personal data, stop and back up that data first. USB archiving also does not eliminate the need for occasional updates; a game may need to be copied back before updating or launching.
PS5: add an internal M.2 SSD for playable capacity
When an M.2 SSD is the better choice
An installed, compatible M.2 SSD is the PS5 expansion option for people who want extra space from which PS5 games can be launched. Sony documents the added M.2 storage for downloading, copying and launching PS5 and PS4 games. Unlike USB archiving, it does not require copying a PS5 game back to the internal drive before play.

Use Sony’s current PS5 storage requirements as the checklist. The drive must use the required PCIe NVMe interface, fit the supported physical dimensions, meet the specified sequential-read performance and leave enough room for the console’s heatsink-clearance limits. A heatsink may be required, and the combined drive-and-heatsink height must remain within Sony’s allowance. Requirements can vary by PS5 model revision, so verify the current support page and your console’s manual before ordering.
The useful shopping phrase is PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD 2TB. “2TB” describes a capacity to search for; it is not a claim about GTA 6’s eventual size. Check the drive’s complete dimensions, speed specification and heatsink arrangement rather than relying on a listing that merely says “works with PS5.”
Install and format safely
Turn the console off completely, unplug it and follow the instructions for removing the expansion-cover panel and installing the M.2 module. Do not force the retaining screw or operate the console with the cover improperly fitted. After startup, the PS5 will ask to format the new drive; formatting removes data on that module. Once formatted, use the storage settings to choose where new games and apps are installed, and move existing titles through the same Games and Apps management controls.

Cost and compatibility trade-off
An M.2 SSD is a hardware purchase, so compare the complete cost rather than capacity alone. A drive that needs a separate heatsink, or that does not meet the console’s speed and size limits, may be a false economy. Buying a larger compatible module can be worthwhile if you regularly rotate large games, but there is no need to match an unconfirmed GTA VI size. Capacity, validated dimensions and a return policy matter more than a generic “gaming SSD” label.

Xbox Series X|S: use the storage manager first
Review and remove large games
- Open the Xbox storage-management area from the console’s system settings.
- Review installed games and apps, sorting by size where the current interface provides that control.
- Select a title you can reinstall later and choose the uninstall or remove command.
- Confirm that the correct game and edition are selected.
Microsoft maintains an official Manage storage guide, but its support page is rendered dynamically and menu wording can change with system updates, language and console model. If a label differs from the steps above, use the storage category shown in your own Settings screen rather than following an old screenshot.
Keep progress synchronized

The card makes most sense for a player who keeps several large current-generation games installed, has limited broadband or wants to avoid repeatedly copying titles between drives. It costs more than deleting games, and the exact capacities and models vary by country, so verify the regional listing before comparing prices. Do not substitute a generic memory card or USB device simply because its advertised capacity is similar.

Use deletion when you need space immediately and have a reliable connection for a later reinstall. Use a PS5 USB drive when you want a low-cost archive and can tolerate copying PS5 games back. Choose a PS5 M.2 SSD or Xbox expansion card when the priority is keeping a larger ready-to-play library.

The free-space number barely changes
Recheck the Games and Apps list, then inspect captures, add-ons and other media categories. A deleted game may have separate downloadable content that remains installed. Restart the console after a large move or deletion so the storage index refreshes.

A PS5 game on USB will not start
This is expected behavior for PS5 titles on USB extended storage. Use the library’s Move Games and Apps command to copy the game to PS5 console storage or the installed M.2 SSD. Do not repeatedly launch the USB copy or reformat the drive unless you have backed up its contents.
The PS5 rejects an M.2 SSD
Check the PCIe NVMe interface, sequential-read rating, module dimensions and heatsink height against Sony’s current requirements. A drive can have sufficient capacity and still fail because its physical size or thermal solution is outside the supported limits. Remove and reseat the module only with the console powered off and unplugged.
Xbox does not show the expected expansion option
Confirm that the card is an Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card for your market, fully inserted and recognized under storage settings. The download still says there is not enough space
Return to the store listing and compare its requirement with the console’s available space, not merely the size of one deleted game. Leave extra room for installation staging, patches and system overhead. Do not disconnect a drive or power off the console during a move or format. Wait for the operation to finish, then check the storage screen again. If a drive is not recognized afterward, reconnect it directly to the console and use the system’s storage-management controls rather than repeatedly formatting it. Formatting should be a last resort because it erases the archive.
