You can reclaim space on your Mac without turning off Apple Intelligence: review what is using storage, remove files you no longer need, and move large files you want to keep to an external drive. Apple says turning Apple Intelligence off removes its on-device models, so it is not a cleanup step if you want the feature to remain available.
How much Mac storage does Apple Intelligence use?
Apple’s current next-generation Apple Intelligence support page says supported Mac configurations may require up to 8 GB or up to 14 GB, depending on the model and configuration. These are upper amounts, not a guarantee that every Mac uses that much. Check Apple’s current requirements for the applicable device group.

Apple’s separate article for an earlier generation lists 7 GB. That figure applies to that earlier generation and should not be treated as the current universal requirement. Apple also says that turning Apple Intelligence off removes its on-device models; see Apple’s earlier-generation setup guidance.

Apple describes System Data (or Other) as a general category for Apple and third-party files that do not belong to a more specific category. It does not identify one particular file that is safe to remove. Avoid deleting unknown items from system folders; use the category breakdown to find files you recognize. Apple’s steps are in Free up storage space on Mac.

Delete files you no longer need
Review Downloads, Documents, Applications, Messages and media for items you recognize and no longer want. Removing an item may be irreversible unless you have a backup or can download it again. Empty the Bin when you are sure: files there continue to occupy storage until it is emptied.

Move large files or libraries to an external drive
If you want to keep large files, moving them to another storage device frees internal Mac space without deleting the content. Apple specifically names Photos and iMovie libraries as examples. After copying or moving a library, open it from the new location and confirm it works before removing any duplicate on the Mac. You will need the external drive connected to access files stored there. Check that the drive’s capacity and connectors suit your Mac; Apple’s guidance does not specify a universal drive size or model.
Use iCloud or media optimization when on-demand access is acceptable
macOS can store some content in iCloud and make it available on demand, and it can optimize media storage. This can reduce the amount kept on the Mac, but it uses a separate iCloud storage allowance and may require an internet connection to download content. Apple explains these options in Optimise storage space on your Mac.

- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
iCloud capacity is not the same as your Mac’s internal capacity. Apple warns that when iCloud storage is full, services such as backups, Photos uploads and synchronization can be affected. Review your available allowance and manage iCloud storage before relying on it.

Use Safe Mode only for a temporary buffer
Apple says starting in Safe Mode may clear certain system caches, which macOS can recreate as needed. This can provide temporary space for a task such as installing an update, but it is not a lasting way to reduce storage use. Follow Apple’s Mac storage guidance for its Safe Mode instructions.

Which option should you use?
| Approach | Keeps the content? | Where space is freed | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete unneeded downloads, apps or media | No, unless backed up or available to download again | Mac internal storage | You need to confirm you no longer need the items. |
| Move files or a media library to an external drive | Yes, once you have confirmed the moved copy works | Mac internal storage | You need the drive connected to access those files. |
| Store in iCloud or optimize content | Generally; some content may be available on demand | Mac internal storage | Uses iCloud capacity and may require network access. |
| Start in Safe Mode to clear certain caches | Yes; macOS may recreate caches | Temporary internal space | Not a durable storage solution. |
Keep Apple Intelligence enabled
If keeping Apple Intelligence available is your goal, leave it enabled and reclaim space elsewhere. Turning it off removes its on-device models, while deleting arbitrary system files can remove data whose purpose is unclear. Start with storage categories, remove only files you recognize, and relocate large files you want to retain.
