What to Check Before Moving an AI Workload Between GPU Cloud Providers

A practical checklist for verifying destination GPUs, software, networking, storage, transfer economics, responsibilities, and workload performance before cutover.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before moving an AI workload, verify that the destination can provide the exact GPU configuration, software stack, network and storage performance, and operational coverage the workload needs—and test it with representative traffic. A matching GPU name or headline specification does not establish that the workload will behave or cost the same there.

What should you inventory before comparing providers?

Start by defining what is moving and what a successful cutover means. A migration plan depends on the workload’s dependencies, data state, region, availability needs, and tolerance for downtime; without those details, neither a reliable schedule nor a meaningful cost comparison is possible.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Workload and dependencies: Record models, tokenizers, frameworks, container images, drivers, libraries, licenses, orchestration, external services, secrets, and scheduled jobs. Note which components are stateful and which can be rebuilt.
  • Data: Identify each dataset and model artifact’s location, size, access pattern, update rate, persistence needs, and permissions. Include caches and intermediate files if they affect startup time or correctness.
  • Placement: List required regions, data-residency or regulatory constraints, and any dependencies on services that must remain near the workload.
  • Availability and recovery: Set acceptable downtime, recovery time and recovery point objectives, and the conditions that trigger rollback. Identify which workloads can tolerate an outage and which need redundancy during the move.
  • Success criteria: Define correctness, latency, throughput, availability, and cost-per-useful-output thresholds before running a destination test.

Google Cloud’s migration guidance recommends assessing workloads and identifying which can tolerate downtime. It also notes that zero or near-zero downtime requires designed redundancy and coordination; it is not an automatic property of a cloud-to-cloud move.

Does the destination offer the configuration the workload actually needs?

Ask for the exact destination configuration in the required region, not just a product-family name or a GPU model listed on a provider page. Capacity and supported options can vary by region, instance shape, and current availability.

Check What to confirm
GPU allocation GPU model and count, memory, and whether access is exclusive, MIG-partitioned, or time-sliced where applicable. Confirm the selected mode is supported for the workload.
Software compatibility Supported driver and runtime versions, framework and container requirements, licenses, and whether existing images or orchestration assumptions need changes.
Topology and networking GPU-to-GPU and node-to-node topology, inter-GPU fabric, network mode, and the path available for collective communication. Ask how the workload receives hardware-accelerated networking, if needed.
Storage path Persistent-storage semantics, filesystem or API compatibility, local ephemeral capacity, and measured throughput and IOPS for the workload’s access pattern.
Quota and capacity Quota approval, available capacity for the intended cluster shape, and the provider’s process for restoring or scaling that capacity.
Management boundary Which party operates drivers, upgrades, monitoring, incident response, recovery, and the underlying infrastructure—and which tasks remain with your team.

NVIDIA’s AI Cloud requirements emphasize native access to networking, GPUs, and storage for demanding multi-node workloads. Its guidance also discusses topology, GPU exposure, and storage choices. These are reasons to verify the destination’s actual implementation and test it, not evidence that every provider offers equivalent hardware paths or controls.

Will multi-GPU, multi-node, and storage behavior hold up?

Test the communication pattern

For multi-GPU or multi-node training and inference, validate the selected instance or cluster shape with the workload’s real collective-communication pattern. A GPU count alone says little about effective scaling: placement, topology, interconnect, and network behavior can change the result. NVIDIA’s material notes that topology-aware placement can optimize collectives, but that is a capability to check on the chosen service, not a guarantee for every product.

Test the model-loading and data path

Measure the path from persistent storage to the GPU nodes, including model loading and cache behavior. Check whether the destination’s storage is persistent or ephemeral, how local caching works, and whether the workload’s filesystem or API expectations are met. NVIDIA describes both external multitenant storage and local ephemeral storage used for caching data and model images; confirm which choices the shortlisted service actually exposes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for evidence tied to the selected shape

Request current configuration and performance information for the specific region, instance or cluster shape, network mode, and storage path under consideration. A result from a different topology or hardware exposure mode may not predict the behavior of your deployment.

How long will data movement take, and what will it cost?

Estimate from the volume that must move and the effective end-to-end bandwidth, then account for verification, retries, operational overhead, and any time spent keeping source and destination data consistent. Google Cloud gives an idealized example of 100 TB over a 1 Gbps network taking 12 days. The page does not state a publication year, and Google explains that actual duration depends on dataset size, bandwidth, management time, and bandwidth efficiency; treat the figure as an illustration, not a provider-neutral guarantee.

Build the migration estimate from all material cost components, not just the transfer product’s quoted charge:

  • Source-cloud egress and read operations.
  • Destination storage during transfer, validation, overlap, and rollback.
  • Transfer tooling, added bandwidth, and any temporary network capacity.
  • Engineering and operations time for setup, monitoring, validation, and recovery.
  • Production impact if migration traffic shares constrained network capacity.

Compare online and offline transfer where both are practical for the dataset and schedule. For online transfer, assess public internet, VPN, and interconnect paths against security policy, geography, routing, expected speed, latency, reliability, SLA, complexity, and cost. Google Cloud documents public IP transfer, managed VPN, Partner Interconnect, Dedicated Interconnect, and Cross-Cloud Interconnect as options in its connectivity guidance; that list does not establish that a given option is available for every provider pair. Google also cautions that internet-based transfer should be checked against company policy and can affect production network performance.

Who is responsible for security, operations, and recovery?

Get the destination provider’s current contractual and operational documents, then map each responsibility to a named team. A shared-responsibility model should make clear who handles security, maintenance, availability, and recovery instead of leaving ownership implicit.

  • Service commitments: Compare the contractual SLA’s scope, measurement period, exclusions, and remedies. Do not treat an SLO or a marketing uptime statement as a contractual guarantee.

NVIDIA’s Requirements for AI Clouds, version 2.4, defines an SLO as “a measurable service-performance target consisting of a metric, threshold, scope, and Measurement Period.” NVIDIA distinguishes SLOs from SLAs and calls for targets to be incorporated into applicable SLAs. The provider’s actual agreement—not a general guide—determines the commitments that apply to your service.

How should you benchmark the destination?

Run a repeatable test on the actual destination configuration before production cutover. Use representative input sizes and traffic patterns, and compare results against the success criteria established during inventory. Peak throughput or GPU utilization alone can hide worse latency, lower correctness, or higher cost per useful output.

Record enough provenance to make results interpretable and repeatable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Model and tokenizer, backend, container image, framework, and relevant software versions.
  • GPU and cluster profile, topology, network mode, and storage path.
  • Prompt and output profile, concurrency, and cache state.
  • Measured correctness, latency, throughput, and total cost for the useful work completed.

NVIDIA’s version 2.4 requirements say to run the latest publicly available NVIDIA Exemplar benchmark release. In the specific example requirement described there, performance must be within 5% of an NVIDIA-provided target on each Scalable Unit. That is NVIDIA’s stated threshold for that context, not a universal acceptance threshold for cloud migrations; set criteria that match your own workload and service requirements.

What is a safe sequence for staging the move?

  1. Approve the destination configuration: Confirm region, GPU allocation, software compatibility, topology, network, storage, quota, security, and contractual fit before scheduling production data movement.
  2. Prepare the transfer path: Select an online or offline method, estimate duration and costs, and agree on how changing data will be synchronized.
  3. Copy and validate: Move data and artifacts, then verify checksums, permissions, completeness, and application access. Keep the source intact while validation is in progress.
  4. Run representative tests: Benchmark the destination and verify correctness, performance, and cost against the pre-agreed thresholds.
  5. Canary the workload: Shift a limited workload or traffic share first. Monitor the same correctness, latency, throughput, and operational signals used for acceptance.
  6. Cut over or roll back: Move production only when the agreed thresholds pass. If a rollback trigger occurs, return traffic or processing to the source using the recovery plan; the exact sequence depends on the workload’s state model and data-consistency needs.

Keep the source available for the agreed rollback window and define how writes, queues, checkpoints, and other state will remain consistent during that period. A migration plan must account for the workload’s own data model; there is no single cutover sequence that fits every AI system.

How can you compare shortlisted providers fairly?

Use one workload profile, region requirement, test plan, and cost horizon for every candidate. Record evidence for each item, and mark a capability as unconfirmed until the provider documents it or a test demonstrates it.

Comparison area Evidence to collect
GPU and availability Exact configuration, access mode, region, quota, and capacity confirmation.
Software and topology Supported runtime and container stack, network and interconnect design, and measured multi-GPU or multi-node behavior.
Storage and data transfer Storage semantics and measured access performance, transfer route, estimated duration, and total migration costs.
Location and security Region and regulatory fit, isolation and data-handling responsibilities, and required controls or evidence.
Operations and contract Support and incident process, responsibility map, SLA scope and exclusions, measurement rules, and remedies.
Workload economics Measured performance and total cost per useful output using the same workload profile and acceptance criteria.

Live GPU inventory, runtime support, pricing, transfer fees, regional availability, certifications, and contract terms are provider- and configuration-specific. Verify them with the shortlisted providers and their current documentation and agreements; the workload, providers, regions, data volume, budget, and downtime target determine what a migration will actually require.
