Apple Intelligence is built into macOS and handles many requests on the Mac; ChatGPT is an optional extension that sends the content you choose to OpenAI, or a separate service you can use on its own. Apple publishes Apple Intelligence storage requirements, but there is no comparable official figure for the standalone ChatGPT Mac app’s local cache.
What is being compared?
There are three distinct ways to use these tools on a Mac:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Apple Intelligence: Apple’s built-in features in macOS and supported Apple apps, including Writing Tools, summaries, Siri, Image Playground, and Shortcuts actions.
- ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence: An optional extension that Apple documents for Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, and Shortcuts. It routes selected requests to ChatGPT.
- The standalone ChatGPT service: ChatGPT used separately from Apple’s integration, such as through its own Mac app. Its features and data controls are governed by the ChatGPT service and the user’s account settings.
The distinction matters: Apple’s processing and storage statements about Apple Intelligence do not automatically apply to ChatGPT, and ChatGPT account controls do not describe Apple Intelligence requests that never go to ChatGPT.
Features: where each option fits
Apple Intelligence
Apple’s Mac materials describe Writing Tools for composing, rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text, alongside Siri, Image Playground, Shortcuts actions, and features across apps such as Mail, Messages, Notes, Photos, Safari, and Reminders. What is available depends on the macOS version, language, and region; some server-backed features have usage limits. See Apple’s Use Apple Intelligence on your Mac guide for current feature details.

ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence
Apple describes this integration as an optional extension. It can help Siri answer some questions, use ChatGPT to compose text or images from Writing Tools, add styles in Image Playground, and handle more complex Shortcuts requests. This is a supported set of Apple workflows, not a guarantee that every ChatGPT feature is available inside macOS. Apple’s instructions are in Use ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence on Mac.
Standalone ChatGPT
The standalone service is separate from Apple’s extension: you use ChatGPT directly rather than invoking it from an Apple Intelligence feature. Its available capabilities and privacy options depend on the service, account, and settings in use. The Apple integration’s consent prompts and no-account data handling should not be assumed to describe standalone use.

Privacy: where requests go
Apple Intelligence processing
Apple says many Apple Intelligence tasks run entirely on the device. Some more complex requests use Private Cloud Compute on Apple silicon servers: Apple says only data relevant to the request is processed, the result returns to the Mac, and the request data is not retained or accessible to Apple. These are Apple’s stated design and privacy claims, not a claim that every Apple Intelligence task stays local. Apple explains its approach in Apple Intelligence and privacy on Mac.

This can help distinguish requests handled by Apple’s cloud service from those processed on the device; it does not make Private Cloud Compute the same as ChatGPT.

ChatGPT invoked by Apple
When you invoke the ChatGPT extension, Apple says the request content, any attachments you choose, and limited contextual information are sent to ChatGPT. Apple says you are asked before photos or files are sent, even if general request confirmation is turned off. You choose whether to use the extension and what to submit; the transfer boundary is different from Apple Intelligence processing that does not invoke ChatGPT.
OpenAI describes two account modes for this Apple integration:

- Without a ChatGPT account: OpenAI says it processes the request to provide a response and comply with applicable law, but does not store the request or use it to train models, except where required by law. OpenAI also says it does not receive the user’s IP address in this mode. These statements apply specifically to ChatGPT requests through Apple’s integration without an account.
- With a ChatGPT account: The account’s settings apply, and conversations may be saved to ChatGPT chat history. OpenAI says users can control model improvement and use Temporary Chat; handling is not necessarily identical for every account or setting.
OpenAI’s explanation is How your data is handled when you use ChatGPT through Apple’s integrations. For standalone ChatGPT, consult the controls and policy applicable to that service and account rather than carrying over the Apple-integration rules.
Storage: what is known on Mac
Apple’s September 14, 2026 support guidance says Apple Intelligence requires a Mac with M1 or later, subject to current software, language, and regional requirements. It may use up to 8 GB of storage on other eligible Mac models and up to 14 GB on certain newer configurations, including listed M3-or-later Macs with at least 12 GB of unified memory. These are Apple Intelligence device-storage requirements, not measurements of ChatGPT’s cache or account history. Check How to get the next generation of Apple Intelligence for current eligibility and configuration details.

The official information cited here does not state an exact local disk-cache size or a fixed local retention period for the standalone ChatGPT Mac app. Nor does a conversation saved in online chat history tell you how much disk space the app uses locally. There is therefore no apples-to-apples published storage figure for the two products.
Quick Recap
Availability and limits to check
- Apple lists Macs with M1 or later as eligible for Apple Intelligence, but eligibility also depends on supported macOS, language, and region; check Apple’s current requirements before relying on a feature.
- Apple says the ChatGPT extension is available where the ChatGPT app and service are available.
- Apple’s current guide describes Siri AI screen-aware use as a beta feature on macOS 27 or later for eligible Macs, with language and usage-limit caveats. Treat it as beta functionality, not a stable feature available universally.
- Feature availability and limits can change with software releases, supported languages, regions, and service policies.
Which should you use?
- Choose Apple Intelligence for supported built-in Mac workflows and local-first processing, while recognizing that some requests use Private Cloud Compute.
- Use ChatGPT through Apple when a supported Apple feature would benefit from ChatGPT and you are comfortable sending the selected request or attachment to OpenAI under the applicable account mode.
- Use standalone ChatGPT when you want to work directly in the ChatGPT service; evaluate its own account controls and do not assume Apple’s integration privacy terms apply.
