Start at Settings > General > iPad Storage to see what is using space before removing anything. For a lower-risk cleanup, offload apps you may use again and review downloaded files and videos. If you use iCloud Photos, Optimize Storage can reduce local photo use—but deleting a synced photo also deletes it from your other devices.
Check what is using iPad storage first
Open Settings > General > iPad Storage. The screen shows available space, storage recommendations when available, and a list of apps with their storage use. Review the largest categories and apps before choosing an action; the amounts and recommendations are specific to your iPad.

iPad storage is the built-in capacity of the device. iCloud storage is a separate account quota. A full iPad does not necessarily mean iCloud is full, and the reverse can also be true.
Offload apps you may want to use again
Offload App removes the app itself to free space while keeping its documents and data. Its icon remains on the Home Screen, and you can tap it to reinstall the app. Reinstalling requires the app to remain available; a network connection may be needed.

To offload one app, use its option on the iPad Storage screen. To let iPad offload unused apps automatically, go to Settings > Apps > App Store > Offload Unused Apps. Apple says this automatic feature removes unused apps while keeping their data.

Review downloads, files, and message attachments
Apps are only one part of the picture. Apple identifies downloaded shows and other videos, Messages conversations and attachments, iCloud Drive documents, and offline files in apps such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote as places that can use device storage.

- Streaming videos: Remove downloaded episodes or films you have finished or can download again.
- Files and downloads: In the Files app, review Downloads and other locally stored files. You can delete, move, copy, or share files; check what a file is and where it is stored before removing it.
- iCloud Drive: If the interface offers a remove-download action, use it to remove the local copy while keeping the cloud file. Deleting a file is different and may remove the document from iCloud Drive.
- Messages: Review large attachments and conversations before removing them, especially if they contain information you need to retain.
- App-specific offline content: Check the app that downloaded or created the files; its controls may determine whether content can be removed locally or must be deleted from the service.
Free up space without deleting photos
Use Optimize Storage with iCloud Photos
If you use iCloud Photos and have enough iCloud capacity, turn on Optimize iPad Storage in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, then confirm the option shown on your iPad. With optimization, full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud and the iPad can keep smaller, space-saving versions locally. Apple describes optimization as on by default when iCloud Photos is used; labels and settings can vary by iPadOS version.

This option depends on iCloud Photos and sufficient iCloud storage. It can reduce how much photo space is used on the iPad, but it does not increase the device’s built-in capacity.

Know what deleting a synced photo does
When iCloud Photos is enabled, deleting a photo or video on one device also deletes it from other devices signed into the same Apple Account. Apple says deleted items normally remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days, but if iCloud storage is exceeded, deleted photos and videos may be removed immediately without recovery from that album. Before deleting, verify that important pictures are backed up or retained somewhere you trust.
Transfer selected photos instead
If you prefer not to rely on photo optimization, Apple lists transferring photos and videos to a computer as another option. Confirm the transfer completed and that the files are accessible before removing anything from the iPad. Compatibility with external drives and adapters depends on the iPad and accessory, so do not assume a particular storage device will work without checking its requirements.

Understand iCloud storage separately
Apple includes 5 GB of free iCloud storage with an iCloud account. If you need more room for iCloud Photos or backups, iCloud+ is an optional upgrade path. More iCloud capacity can support cloud storage and photo optimization, but it does not add physical storage to the iPad.

How much free space should an iPad have?
Apple Support’s general performance guidance says, “To avoid slowdowns, maintain at least 1 GB of free space.” This is a recommendation, not a hard technical minimum or a guarantee that reaching exactly 1 GB will resolve every performance problem. Check the iPad Storage screen to see your device’s current available space.
