Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo free up space on a nearly full PC or Mac without losing files, first let your cloud service finish uploading and syncing them. Then switch supported files to online-only or streaming access instead of deleting them. The files remain in your cloud account, but they still use its storage quota; opening an online-only file may require an internet connection.
How online storage frees local disk space
Uploading a file does not necessarily remove its local copy. A sync service may keep complete copies both in the cloud and on your computer. To reclaim disk space, use a feature that leaves the file visible in the desktop folder but downloads its contents only when needed.

- Syncing keeps changes aligned between your computer and cloud account.
- Mirroring keeps full local copies as well as cloud copies, so it uses local disk space.
- Streaming or online-only access shows files in the desktop interface without keeping all their contents on the computer.
- Offline availability downloads a file so it can be opened without an internet connection, using local storage.
Online-only is not the same as deleting. Use the service’s documented space-saving action to retain the cloud copy; deleting a synced file can remove it from the cloud too.
Choose the right option for your computer
| Option | Local disk behavior | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OneDrive Files On-Demand | Files can remain online-only; files marked for offline use are downloaded. | You already use OneDrive on Windows or Mac. | Files still count against your OneDrive storage quota, and offline copies use local space. Microsoft’s Files On-Demand guidance. |
| Google Drive for desktop: Stream files | Files stay online unless you make them available offline; streaming uses almost no local space. | You want to browse Drive files from your desktop without mirroring the whole collection. | Offline files use local space, and streamed files still count toward Google storage. Google’s streaming and mirroring guidance and Google’s storage guidance. |
| Google Drive for desktop: Mirror files | Files are stored both on the computer and in Drive. | You want a local copy and local access. | Mirrored files use local disk space. Do not remove the mirrored folder before changes finish uploading. Google’s guidance on unsynced files. |
| iCloud Drive storage optimization on Mac | macOS can keep recently opened files on the Mac as space is needed while supported content is stored in iCloud Drive. | You use iCloud Drive with supported Mac folders. | Behavior depends on macOS and account setup; a file may need to download before local access. Apple’s Mac storage guidance. |
| External storage | Moves files to a connected physical drive rather than online storage. | Cloud upload is unsuitable or you need another place for large files. | You must keep and maintain the drive. Apple lists external storage as an option in its storage guidance. |
Consider whether you already have an account, how much cloud and local capacity you have, which files must work offline, and whether the service streams or mirrors. No one option is best for every workflow.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Before making files online-only
- Check local free space. Review your operating system’s storage settings so you can see whether the change is helping.
- Check cloud capacity and sync status. Make sure the account has room, syncing has completed, and important files are visible in the cloud service before you remove local copies or change their availability.
- Keep working files and essentials available offline. Current projects, travel documents, and other files you may need without reliable internet should remain downloaded. They will use local storage.
- Use the service’s online-only or streaming control. Do not substitute an ordinary delete action; it may remove the cloud copy as well.
Free up space with OneDrive
Windows
OneDrive Files On-Demand lets you see files in File Explorer without keeping every file’s contents on the device. After a file has synchronized, use OneDrive’s Free up space action on the selected file or folder to return it to the online-only state. The file remains visible in OneDrive, but opening it may require an internet connection. Microsoft describes Files On-Demand for Windows in its support guidance.
Windows Storage Sense can also return unused locally available cloud files to online-only status. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance covers Windows 10; Settings labels and availability can differ by Windows version and edition. Search Settings for “Storage Sense” if the path does not match your screen. For OneDrive client controls, consult the current OneDrive help for your version.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Mac
OneDrive for Mac supports online-only and offline states through Files On-Demand. An offline-pinned file is downloaded and uses Mac storage; an online-only file can be downloaded again when needed. The available controls can depend on macOS and OneDrive client version, including File Provider requirements. See Microsoft’s OneDrive for Mac Files On-Demand guidance.
Use Google Drive streaming instead of mirroring
Google Drive for desktop has two storage modes: Stream files and Mirror files. If your goal is to conserve local disk space, choose streaming if it fits your needs. Streamed files stay online unless you make them available offline. Mirroring stores files on your computer as well as in Drive, so it uses local space. Google explains the distinction in its Drive for desktop guidance.

Before cleaning up a mirrored folder, wait for uploads to finish. Google warns that removing a local folder before unsynchronized changes have uploaded can lose those files; see its guidance on unsynced files. Streaming files still count toward Google storage, and computer disk-space readings may not match the account’s storage figures. See Google’s storage explanation.

iCloud Drive can store Desktop and Documents content, while macOS keeps recently opened files on the Mac and frees local space as needed. This is an operating-system-managed option for supported content, not a guarantee that every file will always be stored locally. Apple’s Mac storage guide places Storage under System Settings > General in macOS Ventura 13 and later; the route and labels can differ in older releases.

The same Storage guidance includes other cleanup options, such as removing media that can be streamed or downloaded again and moving files to another storage device. If cloud optimization does not recover enough space, review those recommendations in Storage settings.

If the drive still appears full
- Check sync status again. An upload that is still in progress is not a safe basis for removing its local source, especially with mirrored folders.
- Check which files are pinned offline. Files marked for offline use remain downloaded and continue to occupy disk space.
- Allow for storage reporting differences. Local disk usage and cloud-account usage measure different things; streaming can save local space without reducing the cloud quota.
- Use operating-system cleanup guidance. On a Mac, review Storage settings. On Windows, look for Storage Sense; Microsoft also points OneDrive users to Disk Cleanup or Storage Sense for working space.
