The exact account and inspection steps depend on the phone and the service you choose.
1. Back up your data and make sure the transfer worked
Save the information you want to keep before erasing or handing over the old phone. Apple recommends backing up and transferring information before removing personal data from an iPhone. For its India trade-in flow, the phone also needs internet access.

Do not treat a backup as complete until you know you can use it. Check that important photos, contacts, messages, and files are available on the replacement phone or in the backup location you intend to restore from. 2. Prepare your accounts and remove device locks as required
For an iPhone
Make sure you know your Apple Account credentials and follow the instructions for the trade-in service you selected. Apple says erasing an iPhone turns off Find My and Activation Lock. However, Apple India’s trade-in guidance says a courier may need the Apple ID and password to turn off Find My, so check the particular handover instructions rather than assuming every exchange follows the same process.

For an Android phone
Back up what you need, sign out of the account associated with the phone, and then erase it. Apple’s trade-in guidance warns that failing to sign out can affect eligibility when an Android device is traded in through its process. Other buyers may have different requirements, so read their instructions before collection or drop-off.
Account access matters: a phone that remains tied to an account or device-lock feature can complicate inspection or acceptance. Keep the credentials available until the provider confirms it has completed the required checks.

3. Erase the phone after the backup and transfer
Use the phone’s built-in erase or factory-reset option only after confirming your backup and transfer. Apple says erasing removes local content and turns off Apple services. Apple’s trade-in guidance for Android also calls for signing out and erasing the device.
Deleting a few photos, apps, or messages is not the same as erasing the phone. Follow the device maker’s reset instructions and wait for the process to finish before handing it over. For Apple-specific preparation, use Apple’s instructions for selling, giving away, or trading in an iPhone.

4. Remove physical cards and deal with eSIM service
- Physical SIM: Remove it before handover. Contact your carrier if you need to transfer or suspend the phone service.
- Memory card: If the phone has removable storage, take the card out and keep or securely erase it separately.
- eSIM: Coordinate transfer or suspension with your carrier. Apple says to erase the eSIM profile when prompted during the iPhone erase process; confirm the right step for your service before proceeding.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission also advises removing SIM and memory cards before getting rid of a phone: FTC guidance on protecting your privacy when getting rid of a phone.
5. Read the inspection and valuation terms before accepting a quote
Do not assume an initial exchange quote is guaranteed. Google Store India’s terms say a traded-in device is physically and functionally evaluated and its value may be revised. Google’s help page says Cashify operates the India exchange programme and that the final exchange value follows inspection. These rules describe that specific Google Store India route; they do not establish how every retailer or buyback service handles valuation.

Before choosing a buyer, compare the actual final amount after inspection, eligibility and condition rules, payment or exchange timing, and the handover process. Check whether the phone must remain unlocked or internet-accessible for inspection, and what account access the inspector may need. A direct sale and a retailer trade-in can differ on these terms; neither route is established as always paying more.

Before surrendering the old phone, check that the replacement can access the data and phone service you rely on. Confirm that the relevant transfer or restore is usable, that your number works on the new device, and that you can still sign in to essential accounts. Keep the old phone until these checks and the provider’s required account or inspection steps are complete.

Apple’s preparation guidance emphasizes backup and account access, while Google Store India’s terms place responsibility for erasing personal data on the customer. That makes the sequence important: transfer and verify first, erase second, and hand over only when you are satisfied the replacement is ready.
Which handover route should you choose?
Compare a direct sale with a retailer trade-in or buyback using the terms that matter for your phone and situation:
- The final amount after inspection, not only the initial estimate.
- Eligibility requirements and how condition affects valuation.
- When and how payment or exchange credit is delivered.
- Whether the phone must be unlocked, internet-connected, or available for inspection.
- What account credentials or actions are required at handover.
The available official guidance establishes Apple-specific preparation and a particular Google Store India exchange flow, not one universal procedure for all Indian retailers. It also does not establish which service will offer the best Diwali 2026 value for a specific phone.
