Check what is using space before deleting anything

Open File Explorer, select This PC, and note the available space on the drive.

Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows groups storage use into categories; names and navigation can vary slightly by Windows version.

Open Cleanup recommendations, if available. Review the listed items and the estimated space savings before selecting anything. Suggestions can include temporary files, previous Windows installations, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. See Microsoft’s Windows drive-space guidance.

There is no reliable amount of space everyone can recover: it depends on what is stored on that particular PC. Select only categories you understand and are willing to remove.
Choose a cleanup method that fits your needs

Use Storage Sense with deliberate settings
Storage Sense works on the system drive, usually C:. Its default behavior includes cleaning temporary files and Recycle Bin contents over time, but Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you configure those options. Check the current controls under Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense and read Microsoft’s Storage Sense settings guide.

Before enabling automatic cleanup for Downloads, decide whether you might still need files there. Be just as careful with cloud settings: making a locally available cloud file online-only saves local space but means you need connectivity to retrieve it later. Files set to Always keep on this device are exempt from Storage Sense management.

Review Disk Cleanup categories before removing them
If Storage Sense is unavailable or you prefer a manual tool, run Disk Cleanup from Windows search. Choose the drive, inspect each category’s name and description, and select only items you are comfortable removing. The tool can offer additional categories after you choose Clean up system files; those options also need review. Microsoft’s Disk Cleanup instructions explain the process.

Keep the previous Windows installation if rollback matters
A category such as Previous Windows installation(s) refers to files used to return to the earlier Windows version after an upgrade. Removing them deletes that rollback option and cannot be undone. Microsoft says the previous version is automatically deleted ten days after an upgrade; that is not a promise of a particular amount of space recovered. See Microsoft’s guidance on going back to a previous Windows version.
Find large personal files and decide whether to move or delete them
In File Explorer, check folders such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads. Change the view or sort by Size so large files are easier to spot. Open or identify a file before acting; delete only what you no longer want.

- Want to keep it but rarely need it? Move it to a USB drive, SD card, or other external storage. The device must be connected when you want to open the file.
- Do not need it anymore? Delete it, then empty the Recycle Bin if you want the space returned immediately. Until the bin is emptied, deleted files can continue to occupy space.
For files already in OneDrive, Files On-Demand can reduce local storage by keeping an online-only placeholder instead of the full local copy. Use that option only when you can rely on cloud availability and a network connection for retrieval. Files marked Always keep on this device stay stored locally. Recheck space and stop when you have enough
After each cleanup or move, return to Settings > System > Storage or This PC to check the available space. Doing one step at a time makes it easier to see what helped and avoids removing more than necessary.

If temporary files quickly return
If the Temp folder fills rapidly again after cleanup, Microsoft documents a possible Microsoft Store appx-file issue and provides troubleshooting steps, including resetting the Store, clearing its cache, running the Windows Update troubleshooter, and restarting Windows. Follow the applicable steps in Microsoft’s drive-space troubleshooting guidance.
What not to delete manually
Do not remove unfamiliar files or folders from C:Windows, Program Files, or other system locations to make space. Use Windows cleanup tools for system cleanup and manage personal files only when you recognize them. A file being labeled “temporary” does not by itself mean it has no consequences; check the category description and your own need before removal.
