Short answer: Both S Pens write on their intended phones and support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) remote features there, but they are different model-specific pens, not full-featured substitutes for one another. Samsung says a Note-series S Pen, including the Note20 pen, supports writing only on the Galaxy S22 Ultra; its Air Actions are not supported in that pairing.

Writing, latency and S22 Ultra software features
Each pen is intended for handwriting, drawing and screen interaction on its own phone. Samsung describes the Note20 and Note20 Ultra S Pen as having improved display latency over the prior generation, but the cited support page gives no number. Samsung’s 2022 interim report gives a 2.8 ms optimized S Pen latency figure for the S22 Ultra. Because the cited official material does not give a matched Note20 Ultra number, that figure does not establish a quantified head-to-head latency improvement.
Samsung also describes handwriting-to-text and text extraction from a selected screen area as part of the S22 Ultra S Pen experience. The cited materials do not establish that these capabilities are caused by pen hardware alone; they are features of the phone and its software experience.

Air Actions: what each pen can do
Note20 Ultra S Pen with the Note20 Ultra
Samsung says the Note20 series uses BLE for Air Actions, allowing the connected S Pen to control supported functions remotely. Samsung’s examples include pressing and holding to launch the camera, pressing the button to take a photo, using a gesture to adjust media volume, and navigation or tool actions such as Back, Recents, Home, Smart Select, and Capture and Screen write. Samsung says the Note20 series added five gestures that worked beyond particular apps.
S22 Ultra S Pen with the S22 Ultra
Samsung describes camera and media remote controls alongside Air Actions such as single or double presses, directional actions and zoom. The listed actions also include Back, Home, Recents, Smart Select, and Capture and Write. Availability depends on supported apps and settings, so a listed action should not be assumed to work in every app.

Using a Note20 pen on an S22 Ultra
Samsung’s compatibility guidance draws a clear line: “Note built-in S Pen/Tab built-in S Pen: Writing only.” In practical terms, a Note20 pen can be used to write on the S22 Ultra, but it should not be treated as a remote-control replacement for the S22 Ultra pen. Samsung says the S22 Ultra pen can write on other devices with compatible Wacom panels, while its Air Actions are tied to its designated model.

Charging, battery use and water
The S22 Ultra S Pen charges when inserted into the phone. Samsung Canada Support lists seven minutes for a full charge, up to 20 minutes of continuous Air Action use and up to 24 hours of standby, noting that times can vary. For the Note20 pen, Samsung says charging in the phone’s S Pen slot is needed for remote Air Actions; other S Pen features can remain usable when the pen is discharged. The cited Note20 support page does not provide corresponding numeric charging or runtime figures.

Samsung’s S22 Ultra support article identifies the pen as supported at IP68 and advises removing water before use. Its Note20 support page warns about water entering the S Pen slot but does not state a comparable pen-level IP rating. The cited information therefore does not support a direct rating comparison between the pens.

Match the replacement to the phone rather than shopping by the generic name “Samsung S Pen.” Samsung’s comparison document identifies EJ-PS908B for the Galaxy S22 Ultra and EJ-PN980B for the Galaxy Note20 Ultra. If you need S22 Ultra Air Actions, choose the S22 Ultra model; Samsung’s guidance does not support using the Note20 pen as a full-function substitute on that phone.
