Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If a diesel engine will not turn, do not try to force it with the starter or a long lever. First determine whether liquid is locking a cylinder, corrosion followed long storage, an accessory or driven component is blocked, or the engine has an internal mechanical seizure. The safe next step depends on the cause and the exact engine; stop if hand rotation meets a hard resistance.
Why a diesel engine may not turn
“Will not rotate” describes a symptom, not a diagnosis. Liquid in a cylinder can stop piston travel; extended storage can allow rust to form on cylinder walls; and a jammed accessory or driveline can mimic an engine seizure. Internal seizure is another possibility listed in Detroit Diesel’s 60 Series troubleshooting guidance.

Do not keep cranking while the cause is unknown. A starter can apply substantial force, and the cited Ram diesel hydrolock procedures warn that using it to rotate a suspected hydrostatically locked engine could cause severe damage.
Make the equipment safe and check external causes
- Isolate the battery before inspecting or working on the engine.
- Check whether the transmission, driven equipment, or an accessory is preventing rotation. Look for an obvious obstruction in the air cleaner or intake tract.
- Follow the engine’s service manual for fuel-system hazards, especially before removing injectors. High-pressure diesel systems require model-specific precautions.
The Ram procedures begin their hydrolock checks by disconnecting the battery and inspecting the air cleaner, induction system, and intake manifold. Those steps are specific to the cited Ram engines, not a universal procedure for every diesel.

If hydrolock is possible, do not use the starter
Hydrolock occurs when liquid—such as water, coolant, fuel, or oil—occupies enough cylinder space to prevent the piston from completing its travel. Because liquid does not compress like air, forcing rotation can damage engine parts.
For the specific 5.9 L and 6.7 L Ram diesels covered by the 2003 5.9 L procedure and 2008 6.7 L procedure, the prescribed approach includes removing injectors, placing a shop towel to catch expelled fluid, and turning the crankshaft with the designated barring tool. Both procedures warn against using the starter for this operation.

- Find the service procedure for the exact engine and follow its battery-isolation and fuel-system instructions.
- Use the specified access method and engine-matched crankshaft barring tool. Do not transfer the Ram injector-removal steps to a different engine.
- Turn the crankshaft by hand as directed and identify any liquid expelled. If rotation meets a solid stop or binds, stop rather than applying more force.
- Determine and repair the source of the liquid before restarting. The cited Ram recovery sequences also call for cylinder-wall lubrication and engine-oil and filter service.
Expelling liquid does not prove that connecting rods or other parts escaped damage. Follow the manual’s inspection and return-to-service requirements before attempting operation.
If the engine was stored, corrosion is possible—but not certain
During inactivity, oil can drain from cylinder walls and piston rings, allowing rust to form. The Perkins 1100 Series service manual describes this storage-related risk. The Lombardini 11LD522-3 workshop manual includes cylinder oiling and manual crankshaft rotation in its model-specific storage and return-to-operation guidance.

Those instructions explain why storage preparation matters; they do not promise that soaking a seized engine will free it safely. The cited sources do not establish a universal penetrating-oil mixture, soak time, or recovery method for an engine that is already locked. If the crankshaft will not turn freely by the manual’s prescribed method, arrange inspection rather than escalating force.
Use the correct turning point and stop at resistance
Use only the engine manufacturer’s specified turning point and correctly matched tool. The Ram hydrolock procedures call for a crankshaft barring tool after injector removal. A tool that fits one engine may not fit another, and a breaker bar is not a way to overpower a hard stop.

Do not tow-start, hammer on the crankshaft, or add an arbitrary long lever when the cause is unknown. These are prudent limits: the cited procedures use controlled hand-turning, not force, to diagnose a possible lock. If the crank turns, it still needs appropriate inspection; rotation alone does not certify the engine as undamaged.
Choose the next step by the evidence
| What may be happening | What matters most | Safer next step |
|---|---|---|
| Suspected hydrolock | Liquid may be blocking piston travel. | Do not use the starter. Follow the exact engine procedure for fluid identification and removal, then correct its source. |
| Long-stored engine | Cylinder-wall corrosion is plausible, but storage alone does not confirm it. | Use model-specific instructions; stop if controlled hand rotation binds. |
| Unknown cause or suspected internal seizure | Internal damage or a separate mechanical blockage may be present. | Obtain engine-specific diagnosis rather than applying more force. |
Have the engine inspected under its service manual if it remains locked after an apparent cause is addressed, binds during rotation, contains fluid or metal contamination, or stopped after overheating or oil starvation. The Detroit Diesel troubleshooting section includes internal seizure among possible causes of a no-rotation condition. No universal test in these sources certifies that a freed engine is safe to run.

Oil-fed diesel runaway is a separate emergency, not a freeing method: the 2022 Ram 2500/3500 owner’s manual warns that lubrication loss during runaway can lead to seizure. If the engine stopped in that context, have it inspected before attempting a restart.
