An agent can help corporate finance and security teams prioritize suspicious GSTIN and invoice mismatches, but a local format or checksum alert cannot establish that a supplier is genuine. Use it as a screening signal, then check current taxpayer details and, where available, verify the signed e-invoice or QR data. Keep material decisions with a human reviewer.
What “GSTIN checksum drift” can—and cannot—mean
For this control design, “checksum drift” is a proposed anomaly label for a GSTIN that fails a locally implemented check or differs unexpectedly from a supplier record. The reviewed official guidance does not specify a GSTIN checksum algorithm, test vectors, or a measured drift rate. Without an authoritative specification, teams should not present a particular checksum calculation as official or treat its result as proof of identity.

A structural check can catch malformed entries. It cannot confirm that the GSTIN is currently registered to the claimed business, that the person sending the invoice controls that business, or that the underlying transaction occurred. GSTN’s ITC-04 offline utility manual says the utility can validate GSTIN structure but cannot populate the taxpayer name while offline; connectivity-dependent validation happens during portal upload. That makes local validation a first-pass control, not an identity check.

Compare the invoice with independent supplier and transaction evidence rather than relying on a single identifier. The e-invoice portal’s guidance recommends checking mandatory invoice fields, verifying the supplier GSTIN through the GST Portal or its app, confirming that supplier details match, comparing the invoice with prior invoices, and looking for suspicious inconsistencies.
#1 Best Overall
- Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
- Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
- Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
- 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
Check the parties and invoice fields
GSTN’s Welcome Kit for New Taxpayers lists invoice information including invoice number and date; supplier and customer GSTINs, where registered; place of supply; HSN code and item details; taxable value; tax rates and amounts; reverse-charge status; and supplier signature. Compare these fields with the purchase order, supplier master, receiving records, and previous invoices. An omitted mandatory detail or a mismatch warrants review; neither alone proves fraud.
Look for commercial and risk-profile inconsistencies
Review unusual prices, inconsistent invoice details, and requests for immediate payment alongside the transaction record. The portal’s anti-fraud guidance also identifies shared contact details and a mismatch between declared premises and transaction activity as risk-profile signals. Treat these as prompts to investigate, not automated findings of fraud.

- QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Order books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; a great way to create and maintain a professional image for small businesses and service providers
- 50 TWO-PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the canary and pink copies for your records
- WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
- ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms
- CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers in the upper right hand corner help you thumb through orders quickly
The portal describes fake invoices as including invoices issued without actual delivery or GST payment, and notes that missing mandatory details can also be an issue. A document can therefore look plausible at the identifier level while still failing a commercial or fulfillment check.
What each verification control establishes
| Control | What it can establish | What it does not establish | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local GSTIN structure or checksum screen | Whether an entry passes the implemented format or anomaly rule. | Current taxpayer identity, supplier control of the invoice, or transaction legitimacy. GSTN’s offline utility validates structure but does not retrieve taxpayer names (ITC-04 Offline Utility manual). | Entered value, rule/version used, result, and timestamp. |
| Authoritative GSTIN lookup | Taxpayer details returned by the lookup, such as legal name, trade name, address, PIN code, or status where provided. | Whether the invoice sender is authorized or goods/services were actually supplied. | Lookup result, source, and time queried. |
| Signed invoice JSON or QR verification | Whether the signed invoice or QR content verifies through the available verification tool, and the details embedded in that content. | Whether the commercial transaction is genuine or the supplier’s payment instructions are safe. | Original signed file or QR image, verification output, and time checked. |
| Commercial and historical comparison | Whether invoice details align with the purchase order, receiving evidence, supplier history, and known business activity. | Fraud as a conclusion based on any one mismatch. | Compared records, differences, and reviewer disposition. |
IRIS IRP documents GSTIN taxpayer-detail lookup and signed invoice/QR verification. Its lookup page says changes made on the GST Portal may take up to one hour to appear in its results; treat that as the page’s stated possible delay, not a guaranteed service level. Its QR documentation says the content may include buyer and supplier GSTINs, invoice number, date, value, HSN code, IRN, and the IRP digital signature.

- QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Invoice books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; easily customize by using the extra space at the top and your company stamp
- 50-TWO PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the yellow copy for your records

- CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers help you thumb through invoices quickly
- STOCK UP: Each book includes 50 white/canary sets; order several to keep your favorite forms on hand
A successful signature or QR verification concerns the signed invoice content. It does not replace checks of supplier identity, purchase authorization, delivery, or payment changes.
Do not confuse GSTIN checks with the IRN
The Invoice Reference Number (IRN) is a separate invoice identifier, not a GSTIN checksum. IRIS IRP describes an IRN as a unique 64-character number generated using SHA-256 inputs: supplier GSTIN, document type, document number, and financial year. The financial year is determined from the invoice date and runs from April 1 to March 31. Those documented IRN inputs do not provide a GSTIN checksum formula.

A human-supervised agent workflow for supplier screening
The following is a proposed control design based on the verification capabilities described by GSTN and IRIS IRP, not a tested product or a statutory process. The agent should organize evidence and explain discrepancies, while a responsible employee decides what action to take.

- Collect the evidence. Ingest the supplier master record, invoice fields, purchase order, and any signed e-invoice JSON or QR image. Preserve the original documents.
- Run deterministic checks. Check field formats and internal consistency. Record GSTIN structure or locally defined checksum anomalies as alerts, including the rule used. Do not label the result as an official checksum validation unless the rule has authoritative confirmation.
- Query taxpayer details. Use an authoritative GSTIN-status source to retrieve available taxpayer name, trade name, address, and registration status. Store the source and lookup time with the result so reviewers can interpret freshness.
- Verify signed invoice evidence where available. Check the signed JSON or QR using the applicable verification tool. Compare embedded parties and invoice details with the supplier master, purchase order, and prior invoices.
- Explain, rather than conceal, mismatches. Present each difference with the fields compared and the source supporting each value. A risk score may prioritize review, but should not turn a heuristic into a fraud finding.
- Route consequential discrepancies to a person. Preserve the inputs and tool results, record the reviewer’s decision, and retain an audit trail. Do not let a heuristic mismatch alone change bank instructions, approve credit, or reject a supplier.
Before deployment, compliance and security teams should validate access permissions, privacy, retention, audit logging, and the current terms governing GST Portal access or APIs. These are implementation safeguards, not requirements established by the cited portal guidance.

What “fake invoice under GST” means for this review
The e-invoice portal’s guidance discusses invoices issued without actual delivery or GST payment and flags missing mandatory details. Its practical warning is that an invalid GSTIN or one that does not match supplier details makes an invoice suspect. Apply that as a reason to pause and investigate, not as a standalone legal determination. For a specific tax treatment or dispute, involve the organization’s tax adviser and consult current official requirements.
