It is generally safe to share the receiving address itself, but it is not private: on transparent blockchains, people who know it may be able to view associated transactions and balances. Never share your private key or recovery phrase.
What a crypto wallet address does
A wallet address identifies where a transaction should be directed under a blockchain’s rules. You can think of it as a receiving destination, but not as a bank account: an address is specific to a blockchain or network, and activity on some networks is publicly visible.

Your crypto is recorded on the relevant network’s ledger; a wallet is software, a device, or a service that helps you interact with accounts and use or manage the keys associated with them. The U.S. Treasury’s OFAC FAQ 559 distinguishes an address used to receive virtual currency from a private key used to transfer it. Ethereum.org likewise describes the relationship between accounts and addresses in its Ethereum accounts documentation.
Address, public key, private key, and recovery phrase
| Term | What it means | Should you share it? |
|---|---|---|
| Receiving address | The destination identifier you give a sender for a transaction on a particular blockchain or network. | It can be shared to receive funds, but it may reveal associated activity on a transparent blockchain. |
| Public key | A cryptographic key related to an address. In Ethereum, an address is derived from a public key; the terms are related, not interchangeable. | It is not the credential that authorizes spending, though address sharing is usually the practical way to receive funds. |
| Private key | A secret credential that authorizes transactions or spending. | No. Keep it secret. |
| Seed or recovery phrase | Secret words used to restore access to a wallet. | No. Anyone who obtains it may be able to control the wallet. |
The Investor.gov custody bulletin explains key and recovery-phrase roles. For Ethereum accounts, an address is not simply another name for the public key; Ethereum.org explains how accounts and addresses relate in its technical documentation.

How to find your receiving address
- Open the wallet or account service you use.
- Select the asset you expect to receive.
- Choose Receive (the label may vary by app).
- Copy the displayed address or show its QR code to the sender.
- Give the sender the network instructions required by your wallet, not just an address copied from another asset’s screen.
Ethereum.org’s wallet guide says each Ethereum account has its own receiving address, a unique sequence of numbers and letters; it describes opening the wallet, selecting Receive, and sharing the address. Bitcoin.com’s Bitcoin address support guide also describes finding an address through a Receive flow. Exact controls differ among wallets and services.
Does one address work for every coin?
No. Use the receiving instructions for the exact asset and network the sender will use. The same or similar token can be available on more than one network, and those versions are not automatically interchangeable. A wallet may support some networks and not others, so confirm compatibility with the recipient’s instructions before sending.

Ethereum addresses begin with 0x, but that prefix alone does not prove that a particular token or network is supported. Address appearance is only a recognition aid; it is not a compatibility check. Bitcoin has its own address formats and network rules. Do not assume that a familiar-looking address can receive any cryptocurrency.

A receiving address by itself does not let someone spend your funds. It is the information a sender needs to direct a payment to you. However, address sharing is not private: Bitcoin transactions are publicly recorded, and someone who knows an address may inspect associated transactions and balances. See Bitcoin.org’s explanation of things to know.

If you want to limit how easily others can connect activity to you, avoid posting a receiving address publicly and consider sharing it only with the intended sender. Address visibility does not make a private key or recovery phrase safe to disclose; those remain secret in every wallet arrangement.
Check before a sender transfers funds
- Confirm the asset and network. Match the sender’s selection to the receiving wallet’s stated instructions.
- Copy or scan the address. Long addresses are easy to mistype, so avoid entering them manually.
- Verify the full destination. Before sending, check the entire address and network through a trusted route. Bitcoin.org warns that transactions are irreversible and recommends checking the full address in its scam guidance.
- Keep secrets out of support chats. Ethereum.org and Bitcoin.org warn that legitimate support will not ask for your private key or recovery phrase. Do not send those details to anyone claiming they need them to fix a transaction.
Custodial and self-custody wallets
With a custodial wallet, a service controls the keys on your behalf. With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for protecting backups and maintaining access. That difference affects who can manage access; it does not change the basic rule for receiving: share the correct receiving address and network instructions, never the private key or recovery phrase.

For a self-custodied wallet, losing the recovery credentials can mean losing access permanently; a provider may not be able to restore it. Ethereum.org’s security guidance also warns against storing sensitive recovery details in screenshots, which can be exposed through cloud synchronization. A hardware wallet is one option for offline private-key storage, not a requirement for receiving crypto.
