A YouTube stream-key error from a Hetzner server does not, by itself, mean Hetzner is blocking the stream. Check the current key and stream URL first, then verify RTMP or RTMPS support and the server’s outbound firewall rules. If YouTube receives the stream but will not start it, check the channel’s live-stream eligibility.
Identify where the connection is failing
The wording of an encoder error matters: a rejected key, an RTMPS or certificate error, a connection timeout, and a stream that reaches YouTube but cannot go live point to different causes. The exact cause cannot be determined without the full error, encoder and version, server type, and effective firewall rules.

Use this sequence to isolate the failure without changing unrelated network settings.
Refresh and verify the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and select the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Choose the key for the stream you intend to run and copy it into the encoder’s stream-key field, replacing any saved value.
- If you suspect the key was exposed or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
YouTube says stream keys are like a stream’s password and address. Do not include the key in logs, screenshots, or support posts; redact it before sharing encoder configuration. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance and its live-stream troubleshooting steps.

Check the stream URL and protocol separately
The stream URL and stream key are separate encoder inputs. A correct key will not fix a wrong server URL, and a correct URL will not fix a stale key.
- In Live Control Room, copy the Stream URL for the intended stream configuration and put it in the encoder’s server or URL field.
- Put the stream key in the encoder’s separate key field. Check for accidental spaces, truncated characters, or a key belonging to a different stream.
- If using RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and make sure the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube notes that the ordinary RTMP URL is shown by default in the relevant workflow; for RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL and corresponding settings.
- If YouTube reports the specific error “invalid SSL certificate,” its RTMPS guidance suggests adding port 443 to the URL or configuring port 443 in the encoder. Do not treat port 443 as a universal fix for every connection failure.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption. Follow the URL and protocol shown for your stream rather than guessing a destination or port. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and its encoder setup guide.

Check outbound rules on the Hetzner server
An encoder running on a server initiates a connection to YouTube. For that reason, opening an inbound RTMP port on the server is not the first fix to try. Check whether the server can make the required outbound connection to the ingest endpoint and port in its current YouTube Stream URL, and whether return traffic is allowed.
If the server uses a Hetzner Cloud Firewall
Hetzner’s Cloud Firewall FAQ says that all outbound traffic is allowed when no outbound rules are defined. When custom outbound rules exist, new traffic that does not match them is dropped; established and related return traffic is allowed because the Cloud Firewall is stateful. Check the rules attached to the server and any local operating-system firewall. If egress is restricted, permit the required outbound connection to the current YouTube ingest endpoint and port. If the server uses a Hetzner dedicated-server firewall
Hetzner documents its dedicated-server firewall as stateless. With outgoing filtering enabled, response packets in the opposite direction may also be blocked unless the matching rules allow them. Review the actual ruleset for the relevant outbound traffic and return packets; do not copy an example TCP ACK or ephemeral-port rule without checking that it applies to your configuration. Use YouTube preview to locate the remaining issue
- Enter the verified URL and key in the encoder, then start sending the stream.
- Open Live Control Room and wait for the preview. YouTube advises waiting for the preview before going live.
- If no preview appears, focus on the key, URL and protocol, encoder support, DNS and reachability, and outbound or return-traffic rules.
- If the feed appears in preview but the live event cannot start or become available, check that the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, as required by YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance.

Update the encoder and inspect its diagnostics
Use the latest encoder version, as YouTube recommends. Read the exact encoder message and logs with the stream key removed. A key rejection is different from a connection timeout or TLS certificate error; treat the error type as a clue before changing firewall rules. If YouTube receives the feed but reports poor stream health, check the encoder’s status and the server’s outbound internet connection.

- Opening inbound ports first: this does not resolve a server-originated connection if the problem is outbound egress or return traffic.
- Changing the firewall for a key error: first replace the configured key with the current key for the intended stream; network changes will not correct a mismatched credential.
- Using RTMPS without checking encoder support: verify that the encoder supports RTMPS and use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room.
- Allowing a guessed IP or universal port: use the current YouTube URL and its configured port. The cited guidance does not establish one stable ingest IP or one port for every setup.
- Sharing an unredacted configuration: remove the stream key before posting logs, screenshots, or support requests.
