To start an OBS stream automatically after a Windows VPS starts, configure three separate parts: YouTube’s stream settings, OBS’s --startstreaming launch argument, and Windows startup or Task Scheduler. YouTube’s auto-start option can let encoder activity start a broadcast, but it does not launch OBS—and a scheduled YouTube event may still require someone to click Go live. Test the complete sequence on your specific server and stream before relying on unattended starts.
What must happen for the stream to start
Automatic startup is a chain, not a single OBS switch:

- YouTube accepts the encoder feed. OBS needs the stream URL and stream key for the intended YouTube stream.
- Windows launches OBS. Use a startup shortcut or a scheduled task that runs in the appropriate Windows user session.
- OBS starts streaming. Add OBS’s documented
--startstreaminglaunch parameter. - YouTube starts the broadcast. The stream’s auto-start setting and whether it is a persistent stream or scheduled event affect whether encoder activity is enough.
A successful OBS launch only confirms that the application opened. Confirm separately that OBS connects, YouTube receives the feed, and the broadcast actually goes live.

Check the Hetzner and Windows setup first
These instructions concern OBS running on a Windows VPS. Hetzner’s Cloud documentation covers installing Windows on eligible Cloud servers, but its Windows and licensing conditions depend on the server and license arrangement. Hetzner says Windows Server is not supported on its Arm64 CAX Cloud servers. Check the current Hetzner Windows on Cloud instructions for your product and license, and the Hetzner Cloud overview for the Cloud platform. Do not assume that every Hetzner product has the same Windows setup.

The cited Hetzner information does not establish that a particular VPS has the graphics, bandwidth, or performance needed for your OBS scene and output settings. Validate those on the server you actually use.
Connect OBS to the right YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the intended stream.
- Open its stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming configuration. YouTube explains these settings in its stream settings guide.
- Keep the stream key private. It is credential material that identifies where your encoder sends its feed; do not publish it, show it in screenshots, or leave it in public logs.
- Review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop options in YouTube. YouTube says that when both are enabled, the encoder can start or stop the stream. These options govern YouTube’s response to the feed; they do not start OBS or Windows.
When reusing a YouTube stream configuration, check the copied settings rather than assuming the new stream has the behavior you want. The auto-start selections are part of the stream settings.

Tell OBS to start streaming when it launches
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter that automatically starts streaming. Its launch parameters documentation also says that scheduled or otherwise automated Windows launches need a working directory—Windows labels this field Start in—pointing to the folder containing obs64.exe.
- Find the OBS executable, normally named
obs64.exefor a 64-bit installation. Use the actual installation folder on your VPS rather than assuming a default path. - Set the launch command or shortcut target to the full path to
obs64.exe, followed by a space and--startstreaming. For example, if OBS is installed inC:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bit, the target would be"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Replace that example path if your installation differs. - Set the shortcut’s Start in field, or the scheduled task’s working directory, to the directory containing
obs64.exe—in the example,C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bit. - Test the target manually in the Windows session that will run OBS. Confirm that OBS opens and attempts to stream to the intended YouTube feed.
Choose how Windows launches OBS

For either method, ensure the launch happens in a Windows session that can access the OBS profile and sources you intend to use. A task configured to run before sign-in should not be assumed to capture an interactive desktop, game window, or other user-session source. OBS documents the launch argument and working-directory requirement, but there is no single Task Scheduler configuration established here as reliable for every Windows Server version and source type.

Know the difference between a persistent stream and a scheduled event
YouTube’s encoder workflow distinguishes receiving the encoder feed from starting a scheduled broadcast. For a scheduled event, YouTube’s documented flow includes waiting for the Live Control Room preview and clicking Go live. That means OBS can connect automatically while the scheduled event still awaits a human action. Review the YouTube encoder workflow and test your specific event configuration; do not infer that enabling auto-start removes the approval step for every scheduled stream.
If unattended startup is essential, verify that the specific persistent or scheduled stream configuration goes live as intended when the encoder connects. A successful test on one stream type does not establish the behavior of another configuration.

Test the complete reboot-to-broadcast chain
- Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate for your channel, and arrange the YouTube stream settings before the test.
- Restart Windows on the VPS. Confirm that the selected Windows launch method runs OBS with the intended profile and scene.
- In OBS, check that streaming starts and that the intended video and audio are present.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check for the encoder preview and stream health. YouTube recommends advance setup, a realistic audio/video test, and monitoring stream health in its live streaming tips.
- Confirm whether the broadcast is actually live or still waiting for Go live. Record which stream type and settings produced the result.
- Repeat after a full Windows reboot, not just by closing and reopening OBS. Only rely on unattended startup after the same configuration has passed that end-to-end test.
OBS also recommends testing settings before a first stream; see its quick start guide. A reboot test is especially important because application startup alone does not verify YouTube’s broadcast state.
Troubleshoot common startup failures
- OBS opens, but does not start streaming: check that
--startstreamingis present in the actual shortcut or task action and that the intended OBS profile has a valid stream configuration. - OBS cannot find expected settings or behaves differently under automation: verify the Windows account and session used to launch it, and set Start in to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - OBS connects, but YouTube is not live: check the selected stream’s auto-start settings and whether it is a scheduled event that requires Go live after preview.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: check the stream URL and key in OBS and confirm they belong to the intended YouTube stream. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
- A desktop or window source is blank after reboot: check whether OBS is running in the interactive user session that owns the source. A pre-sign-in task is not proof that an interactive capture source will work.
- The feed arrives but has poor health or missing audio/video: inspect the Live Control Room preview and health indicators, then test with realistic content and settings. The cited Hetzner sources do not establish a performance guarantee for a given OBS workload.
