Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo make a website work in Safari, build with standards-based HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; check that the features and media you use are supported; and reproduce and debug failures in Safari itself. Use Safari Web Inspector to find errors and inspect page behavior, Responsive Design Mode to check layouts at different sizes, and an actual iPhone, iPad, or Mac when device-specific behavior matters. Prefer feature detection over browser-name checks.
Start by reproducing the Safari problem
Before changing code, reproduce the issue in the Safari version and on the device where it occurs. Record the page URL, operating system and device, Safari version if available, exact steps, and what failed. Note whether the problem is visual, interactive, media-related, or a page-load failure. Safari behavior can differ across devices and operating-system environments, so “it fails in Safari” is not yet a specific diagnosis.

Keep the failing steps short and repeatable. For example: “On an iPhone, open the product page, select a color, then tap Add to Cart; the button does not respond.” A precise reproduction makes it easier to isolate the issue and later confirm that the fix worked.

Use Safari’s tools to find the cause
Inspect errors and page behavior with Web Inspector
Safari Web Inspector lets you examine a page’s HTML, CSS, JavaScript execution, and loaded resources. Open it on the affected page and look for console errors, failed network requests, unexpected DOM changes, and styles that differ from your expectations. Check whether the failing script runs and whether the relevant element exists when the interaction occurs. Apple documents Web Inspector as its tool for inspecting and debugging web content.

If a change appears not to take effect, stale cached content may be involved. Safari’s Develop menu includes cache-clearing tools. Clear the cache when appropriate, reload the page, and verify that the browser is receiving the updated files; do not assume a cached copy represents the current deployment.
Check layout at multiple sizes with Responsive Design Mode
Responsive Design Mode is useful for quickly checking viewport sizes and pixel ratios. Test the widths, heights, and orientations that matter to your site rather than relying on a single preset. Look for horizontal overflow, clipped content, overlapping controls, text that becomes hard to read, and navigation that no longer fits.
Its device presets are approximations, not complete substitutes for a real device. Browser chrome, the on-screen keyboard, and form-field behavior can affect the visible page. Confirm the affected flow on the actual iPhone or iPad when those details matter.

Automate repeatable flows with WebDriver
For recurring regression checks, Safari WebDriver can automate browser interactions such as opening a page and exercising a critical flow. Apple’s documentation says WebDriver must be enabled for development use; it is off by default. Enable it using the instructions for the Safari and operating-system environment you are testing, then run repeatable tests against the same steps used to reproduce the bug.
Automation helps catch regressions, but it does not replace checking a real device when a failure depends on touch input, the keyboard, or other device-specific behavior.
Fix the implementation, not the browser label
Prefer web standards and feature detection
Use well-formed HTML and standards-based CSS and JavaScript, and avoid making a third-party plug-in a requirement for core site behavior. Apple’s archived Developing Web Content for Safari guide, updated December 12, 2016, says: “You don’t need to add any Safari-specific tweaks to make your website work with Safari or to make your website work on iOS-based devices.” That is useful baseline guidance, not a guarantee that every modern feature or implementation will work without debugging.

When behavior depends on a browser capability, detect whether that capability is available and provide an appropriate fallback. Apple Developer Documentation advises: “Use feature detection to make your website browser independent.” Avoid using the user-agent string to make browser-name or browser-version checks your default fix: it can identify a browser label without establishing whether the needed capability actually works.

When a page looks wrong, inspect the computed styles and the element’s place in the DOM. Check for assumptions about fixed dimensions, positioning, overflow, font sizing, or viewport size that fail at narrower widths or a different orientation. Use responsive rules that adapt to available space rather than patches tied only to a browser name.
For mobile pages, make links and controls easy to activate by touch and leave enough space to avoid accidental taps. Verify the actual interaction on the device, not just whether the page fits inside a simulated viewport.

Check media and plug-in dependencies
Use HTML <audio> and <video> elements for media, and provide a sensible fallback when the required media cannot play. Confirm the encoding and format against the Safari platforms you need to support. Apple’s archived 2016 guide identifies unsupported media compression and plug-in reliance as causes of Safari complaints, but its format examples are dated and should not be treated as a current compatibility matrix.
For effects and animation, prefer web technologies such as CSS or Canvas over a plug-in dependency. Test the actual media and interaction in the relevant Safari environment rather than assuming that a file or effect supported elsewhere will behave identically.

Use semantic markup, accessible names and labels, and ARIA where it is needed to communicate behavior that native HTML does not express. Verify that controls remain usable and understandable in the affected layouts. Test the fix in the context that failed
- Reproduce: Record the device, operating system, Safari version if available, URL, and exact failure steps.
- Inspect: Use Web Inspector to examine console errors, resources, DOM, styles, and script behavior.
- Isolate: Determine whether the cause is a web feature, CSS or layout assumption, JavaScript error, media format, plug-in dependency, or failed resource.
- Correct: Use standards-based markup and styles, feature detection, supported media with a fallback, or a fix for the failing resource.
- Check responsive behavior: Test relevant viewport sizes, orientations, and pixel ratios in Responsive Design Mode.
- Confirm on-device: Repeat the original steps on the affected device when browser chrome, touch, the keyboard, or form behavior could matter.
- Retest after deployment: Verify the original failure against the deployed page, then run the other browser checks required by your support commitments.
Choose the right kind of Safari test
| Need | Best fit | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Find JavaScript errors, inspect styles, or examine page structure | Safari Web Inspector | Use it on the affected page and investigate the specific failure, not just the first visible error. |
| Check layout at different viewport sizes and pixel ratios | Responsive Design Mode | Presets are approximations; they do not reproduce every device control or form behavior. |
| Repeat critical interaction flows | Safari WebDriver | Developer enablement is required; automation does not replace device confirmation for device-specific issues. |
| Confirm behavior affected by real device controls or a particular environment | Safari on the actual iPhone, iPad, or Mac | Test the device and steps associated with the reported problem. |

A screenshot can help document a page’s appearance, but an API screenshot is not a substitute for reproducing a Safari-only interaction in Safari. For visual records or screenshot workflows, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its response identifies whether a request produced a page verdict and whether it was billed.
One GET request can capture a URL. The example below saves a WebP image; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
- It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off.
- Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status.
- An MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for AI agents and other MCP clients. - The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
