If your YouTube Live event is receiving an FFmpeg stream but showing black video, first find where the picture disappears: inspect FFmpeg’s input and output, then compare that output with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. A black local output points to the source or encoding path; healthy local video with a black YouTube preview points you toward the destination, stream key, ingest diagnostics, or connection. Use the health message to choose the next change rather than changing several settings at once.
Find where the video goes black
Compare the picture at each stage: the selected FFmpeg input, the FFmpeg output or a local recording, YouTube’s incoming preview, and playback for viewers. This separates an input or encoding problem from an ingest problem or a viewer-side issue.

Confirm FFmpeg has a real video input
Inspect FFmpeg’s log for the input streams it detects and whether video frames continue to advance. If practical, record or otherwise inspect the encoded output locally. If it is black there too, check the selected input, device or capture permissions, upstream stream, filter chain, stream mapping, and encoder before changing YouTube settings.

There is no universal FFmpeg command that fixes every black screen: the right input options and mapping depend on whether FFmpeg reads a file, camera, desktop capture, or another stream. If you need help diagnosing a command, share the full command and relevant log with the stream key redacted. Never post a live stream key publicly.
Use YouTube’s preview as the next checkpoint
In YouTube Studio, open the event’s Live Control Room and check the incoming preview before clicking Go live. Compare it with FFmpeg’s output or local recording. If FFmpeg has moving video but the preview does not, check the event destination and ingest diagnostics before editing the source.
Verify the event URL and stream key
In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the event you intend to broadcast, then confirm FFmpeg’s output is pointed at that destination with the corresponding current key. A stale URL or mismatched key may send the stream somewhere other than the intended event.

FFmpeg accepts inputs with -i and sends output to a specified URL. Its protocol documentation describes RTMP URL components, and its formats documentation shows the general RTMP-server workflow with FLV output. Treat the following as a schematic only—not a ready-made fix or a tested command:
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'RTMP_URL_WITH_CURRENT_STREAM_KEY'Replace the placeholders with your actual source and the URL supplied for the event. Depending on the input and available encoders, the command may need source-specific options, stream mapping, scaling, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe settings. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and FFmpeg formats and muxers documentation, and use YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the event URL and key.
Use the Live Control Room health message to choose a fix
Read the specific health warning before changing encoder settings. YouTube’s live-stream error messages describe issues including stream format or codec, keyframes, and video dimensions. Its encoder settings guidance lists supported protocols, codecs, bitrates, and resolutions; check the current pages because supported settings can change.

Format and codec
Check that the ingest protocol and video and audio codecs match YouTube’s current encoder guidance. If the health message identifies a format or codec problem, correct that setting first; do not assume that changing resolution or bitrate will fix an incompatible format.
Keyframe interval and GOP
YouTube recommends a keyframe every 2 seconds and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, its error guidance equates 2 seconds to 60 frames. If YouTube reports keyframe or GOP trouble, check the encoder’s interval and closed-GOP behavior against the current guidance rather than guessing from a preset name.
Resolution and dimensions
Check the encoded width and height against the ingest resolution selected in YouTube settings. A mismatch can trigger an error; follow the dimensions reported in Live Control Room and the current encoder recommendations.

Bitrate and audio
Use YouTube’s bitrate range for the selected resolution and codec, and choose a rate your upload connection can sustain. Raising bitrate is not a general fix for black video. YouTube’s current settings page recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio; follow its page for other audio and video settings.

If FFmpeg’s output is healthy but YouTube is not receiving a viewable feed, test the upload connection and look for instability or packet loss. YouTube distinguishes a poor-looking encoder output from a healthy encoder output that has an outbound connection problem; a connection diagnosis is most useful after you have confirmed the local picture and destination. If upload connectivity is unstable, investigate the connection with your internet provider.

Retest methodically before the event
- Make one targeted change based on the local output or YouTube health message.
- Run an unlisted or private test and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Confirm that video moves and audio is present, then watch the health indicator while the test runs.
- Record which change affected the preview. If the picture is still black, return to the stage comparison instead of stacking unrelated setting changes.
