How to Keep a 24/7 YouTube Lofi Stream Running on a Raspberry Pi

A Raspberry Pi can encode a continuous YouTube lofi stream, but sustained performance depends on your exact board, encoder and network. Learn how to set it up, test it and plan for recovery.

A Raspberry Pi can act as the local encoder for a continuous YouTube lofi stream, but no documentation here establishes that a particular Pi can encode a particular resolution and frame rate indefinitely. Start with a conservative workload, test it on your actual board, power supply, network and media, and treat “24/7” as an operating goal—not a hardware or platform guarantee.

What you need to know before building a 24/7 stream

The setup has four moving parts: a Raspberry Pi that runs the encoder, a stable internet connection, a continuous audio-and-visual source you have permission to broadcast, and a YouTube stream key. The Pi sends the stream; YouTube receives and distributes it. If the Pi, encoder process, power, or connection fails, the broadcast can be interrupted.

YouTube’s published ingest settings describe what to send to YouTube, not whether a Raspberry Pi can encode it continuously. The right resolution and frame rate depend on the exact Pi model, operating system, encoder, media and network. Test the combination you intend to use before announcing a permanent stream.

Prepare the Raspberry Pi for unattended operation

Install and access Raspberry Pi OS

  1. Install Raspberry Pi OS Lite with Raspberry Pi Imager, then configure networking and remote access during setup if those options are available for your model and OS image. Raspberry Pi documents both Ethernet and Wi-Fi configuration, plus SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect for first access: Raspberry Pi getting started.
  2. Connect by Ethernet where practical for a more stable wired link. If you use Wi-Fi, test the signal and sustained upload from the Pi’s actual location rather than assuming the router’s speed rating represents performance there.
  3. Use a power supply matched to your specific board. Raspberry Pi’s current recommendations include 5 V/5 A for Raspberry Pi 5 for full peripheral capability and 5 V/3 A for Raspberry Pi 4; consult the official table for other models and requirements. Those power recommendations do not certify a board for uninterrupted streaming.
  4. Set up a way to inspect the Pi remotely and retain encoder logs. Enable automatic start on boot and a process supervisor or restart policy as practical engineering measures; they can restart a failed process, but cannot guarantee a healthy broadcast or repair a failed network connection.

Choose a workload you can actually test

For a static image or lightly animated lofi visual, begin with a conservative output such as 720p at 30 fps, then consider 1080p30 only if the Pi sustains it in a long test. This is a cautious starting approach, not a benchmark result: no specific Pi model and encoder combination has been shown here to sustain either setting. Watch CPU load, temperature behavior, dropped frames, upload stability, audio continuity and YouTube’s stream-health messages over an extended run.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select a live stream and configure its title, visibility and other stream details.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into your encoder’s ingest configuration. YouTube says first-time live streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable and test the channel ahead of any planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, shared configuration files or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Start sending a private or unlisted test stream before promoting the channel. YouTube recommends testing with similar sound and movement to the real broadcast and checking stream health and messages in Live Control Room.

Set encoder output to YouTube’s ingest requirements

YouTube accepts RTMP or RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum; up to 60 fps; and stereo audio at 44.1 kHz with 128 kbps stereo audio. Confirm that your encoder and Pi operating system support the options you select, then verify what YouTube reports after ingest. Full requirements are in YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Target output YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance How to use it
720p30 2 Mbps minimum; 3 Mbps recommended Use as a conservative candidate, then test the Pi’s sustained encoding and leave upload headroom.
1080p30 4 Mbps minimum; 5 Mbps recommended Choose only if the Pi maintains output and the connection can sustain the bitrate reliably.

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that the Pi can encode at that setting or that your upload connection will remain stable. Avoid setting the video bitrate equal to the connection’s best speed-test result: other traffic and fluctuations can interrupt delivery. Test with representative audio and motion, and reduce resolution or bitrate if stream health or dropped-frame indicators show problems.

Loop the lofi audio and visual continuously

Configure the encoder to play a continuous source—such as a prepared video file or playlist—with an audio track and a static or lightly animated visual. Confirm that the playlist actually repeats, that transitions do not leave gaps, and that audio remains present throughout. The specific loop controls depend on the encoder and media workflow you choose; verify them on the installed version rather than relying on assumed Raspberry Pi UI options.

Use only music and visuals you own or have permission to broadcast and, if relevant, monetize. Attribution by itself does not establish permission. YouTube says an active live stream removed for copyright can result in a copyright strike and a seven-day live-streaming restriction; three active copyright strikes can make a channel subject to termination. Review YouTube’s copyright strike guidance and check the rights for every item in the loop.

Vilros Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan-Cooled Heavy-Duty Aluminum Alloy Case
  • KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
  • SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
  • SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
  • IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
  • VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.

Make interruptions visible and recoverable

A restart policy can bring an encoder process back after a crash, and automatic boot start can relaunch it after a reboot. Neither detects every failure: a process may be running while the stream is frozen, the network may be down, or YouTube may no longer be receiving valid media.

  • Keep logs locally and review them remotely; ensure the stream key is not printed or exposed.
  • Check both the encoder process and YouTube Live Control Room. A running process alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  • During a long test, observe CPU load, thermal behavior, upload stability, dropped frames, audio continuity and platform health messages.
  • Test recovery deliberately: restart the encoder, interrupt and restore the network where safe, and reboot the Pi. Confirm what returns automatically and what needs an operator.
  • Arrange periodic remote checks. If a recovery policy repeatedly restarts a process without restoring a valid feed, diagnose the underlying issue rather than treating restarts as proof of reliability.

Raspberry Pi and YouTube documentation do not provide a Pi-specific thermal threshold or continuous-stream reliability guarantee. Use the results from your own deployment, including the intended case, supply, network and media, to decide whether the setup is dependable enough for your use.

Plan around YouTube archives and stream limits

YouTube’s encoder setup guide says: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” If a replay matters, do not plan on one automatically archived video for an uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours; the cited rule establishes automatic archiving for streams under that duration, not a guarantee about what happens to every longer broadcast. Plan your archive workflow around that limit and verify the resulting replay after a test.
