To keep server load low, avoid re-encoding when the source already matches the output you need. There is no universal minimum RAM or CPU requirement: the source file, encoding mode, and VPS’s sustained outbound capacity all matter.
Two ways to send video from a VPS
Copy or remux compatible media
If the source already uses codecs and settings accepted by YouTube, FFmpeg can pass through the audio and video rather than encode them again. This generally reduces CPU work, but check the source’s container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate first. A file that plays locally is not necessarily compatible with the stream configuration you intend to send.

Stream-copy mode does not make an incompatible source compatible; it also does not convert resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. If you need those changed, you will need to re-encode or prepare a compatible file beforehand. Re-encode in real time
When the source does not meet the desired output settings, FFmpeg can decode and encode it as it streams. That requires CPU continuously, and the load depends on the codec, resolution, frame rate, preset, and any filters. Memory use also depends on the exact file and configuration. Test your actual workload on the VPS instead of relying on a generic “minimum RAM” or vCPU figure.

Choose a stream your VPS can sustain
For H.264, YouTube’s settings page accessed in 2026 recommends 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a VPS can sustain the rate around the clock. Choose a resolution and bitrate that fit the server’s reliable outbound capacity, with room for overhead and fluctuations; a plan’s advertised connection speed alone does not establish sustained egress. YouTube’s current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Consult the current settings table for the bitrate appropriate to your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. - Use a test upload or representative section to check motion, audio, and actual server load.
- Compare the configured bitrate with the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity, not just a brief speed-test result.
- If CPU is the bottleneck, try compatible copy/remuxing or reduce encoding demands; if egress is the bottleneck, lower the bitrate or output quality.
Set up FFmpeg and YouTube Live
- Prepare the source. Put the video on the VPS and inspect its container, codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Confirm that it is the intended content and that you have the rights to stream it.
- Create or open a YouTube Live stream. In YouTube Studio, create the stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS ingest endpoint where supported. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Google documents the RTMPS URL format, valid endpoint and path, TLS connection, and port 443 requirements. - Choose copy or encoding. Use stream-copy only when the file’s codecs and parameters are compatible with the output. Otherwise, configure FFmpeg to encode to settings supported by YouTube and within the VPS’s CPU and outbound limits. Do not assume that copying a file changes its format.
- Send the stream over RTMPS. Provide FFmpeg the correct server URL and stream key using a method that does not expose the key in public scripts, logs, shell history, or shared process listings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. YouTube encoder settings
- Loop and supervise the process. Configure the playback workflow to return to the beginning when the file ends, and run FFmpeg under a process supervisor that starts it at boot and restarts it after a failure. A restart policy can recover from a process exit, but it cannot fix an invalid source, a bad key, insufficient bandwidth, or a YouTube-side restriction. Validate the loop and restart behavior before relying on unattended operation.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Start the stream, review YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health messages, and check that both audio and video arrive. Test a representative portion of the loop, including its transition back to the beginning.
RTMPS, HLS, and DASH: which ingest protocol?
For an ordinary low-latency YouTube stream, use RTMPS when your encoder and network support it. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted and suitable for ordinary low-latency streaming. HLS and DASH use segmented delivery and generally have higher latency; consider them when their supported codecs or features are needed rather than choosing them solely to keep a stream online. Monitor YouTube health as well as FFmpeg
A running FFmpeg process only confirms that the process has not exited. It does not prove YouTube is receiving valid video and audio or that viewers see a healthy stream. Check the stream preview, health indicator, and messages in YouTube Studio. The Live API also distinguishes stream statuses and diagnoses problems such as low bitrate, an unsupported video codec, no audio, or video starvation. YouTube Live API: liveStreams

- Low bitrate: Check the configured bitrate and the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity; reduce the rate or output quality if the host cannot sustain it.
- Unsupported video codec: Verify the source codec and output configuration; copy mode preserves the source codec, so re-encode or prepare a compatible file if needed.
- No audio: Check that the file has an audio track and that FFmpeg is sending it in a supported format, such as AAC or MP3.
- Video starvation: Check for source-read delays, CPU saturation during encoding, or inconsistent network egress. Compare YouTube’s reported health with VPS resource and network monitoring.
Common failures and practical fixes
- The stream will not connect: Check that the RTMPS server URL and path are correct, the stream key belongs to the intended YouTube stream, and the VPS can make the required TLS connection over port 443. Replace a key if it may have been exposed.
- The process runs but YouTube shows no healthy video: Inspect Studio’s health messages, verify the video codec and keyframe interval, and confirm the stream is actually progressing rather than stalled on file input.
- CPU stays high: Confirm whether FFmpeg is re-encoding. If the source is already compatible, test stream-copy; otherwise reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoding complexity, then check quality and health again.
- The feed drops during a loop or restart: Test the file boundary and supervisor behavior directly. A process restart can resume service after a crash, but a clean, gapless transition depends on the playback and encoder setup.
- YouTube reports copyright or policy problems: Review the video and audio rights and YouTube’s current live-stream rules. Technical compatibility does not grant permission to rebroadcast music, clips, or other people’s material.
Copyright and reused content still apply
A technically valid 24/7 stream is not automatically permitted or eligible for monetization. Make sure you have the necessary rights for every video and audio element, and review YouTube’s live-streaming and channel monetization policies. Repeating prerecorded material may raise reused-content concerns for monetization; changing the encoder or adding a loop does not itself make content original. Check the applicable rules in YouTube Help before broadcasting.

A low-cost VPS is not necessarily the lowest-cost way to operate continuously. Include recurring hosting, sustained outbound bandwidth or transfer limits, storage, and the time needed to monitor and repair the encoder. No specific provider or plan is established here, so compare those terms directly and test the source at the intended quality before committing. A local PC or a managed cloud service avoids some VPS administration but has different costs and trade-offs.
