How to Fix YouTube Live Rejecting an FFmpeg Stream With an Unsupported Codec

Use YouTube’s exact Live Control Room warning to diagnose an unsupported FFmpeg codec, then check encoding, ingest protocol, stream key, and connection.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If YouTube Live says your FFmpeg stream has an unsupported codec, read the exact warning in Live Control Room first. For an “incorrect stream format” or wrong-video-codec error, the safest troubleshooting baseline is H.264 video with AAC audio; then verify the protocol, profile, bitrate, keyframe interval, stream URL, and key. YouTube’s supported formats differ by ingest method, so changing a codec without checking whether you are using RTMP/RTMPS or HLS can lead to another rejection.

Start with YouTube’s exact error message

Open the Live Control Room and check the warning beside the stream-health indicator. YouTube analyzes the incoming feed and distinguishes format problems from connection problems. Its “incorrect stream format” guidance can refer to the container, audio codec, video codec, or video profile; another warning may name the unsupported component directly. Use the wording to decide what to change rather than treating every failure as a codec issue. YouTube’s live-stream error messages explain the individual prompts.

  • Wrong video codec or incorrect stream format: try H.264 video and AAC audio as the initial RTMP/RTMPS troubleshooting baseline.
  • Unsupported audio codec: YouTube’s error guidance names AAC or MP3 as supported audio options; AAC is the straightforward baseline when troubleshooting.
  • Wrong profile, container, or connection: check those separately. A codec change alone will not fix a bad stream key, URL, or network connection.

Do not interpret H.264 as the only video codec YouTube accepts in every situation. Its general encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, while its error-specific advice directs users to H.264 for the wrong-video-codec condition. The protocol and the particular warning matter. See the error-specific guidance and YouTube’s encoder settings.

Set a compatible FFmpeg output

Re-encode the incompatible stream component

For a conventional RTMP or RTMPS troubleshooting attempt, configure the outgoing video as H.264 and the audio as AAC, then reconnect and check the health indicator. This is a target configuration, not a universal FFmpeg command: available encoders and accepted syntax depend on your FFmpeg build and platform, and YouTube’s help pages do not prescribe a specific FFmpeg command.

  • 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Pay attention to stream-copy options. If your command uses -c:v copy or -c:a copy, FFmpeg passes through that source stream rather than converting it. Changing a filename or container does not itself convert the video or audio codec. Re-encode only the incompatible component when possible; re-encoding both can add CPU load and may affect quality.

Check the protocol-specific encoder settings

For YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS encoder recommendations, use constant bitrate (CBR), set a 2-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Select a bitrate from its resolution- and frame-rate-specific table, using the column for your ingest codec rather than assuming one bitrate fits all streams. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo; 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Review YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; keep the interval at or below 4 seconds.
  • Choose the bitrate for your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec from YouTube’s table.
  • Keep the frame rate at or below 60 fps.

When HLS may be the right alternative

If you need to preserve a codec that is not supported on your selected RTMP path, consider whether YouTube HLS ingest and your encoder support that format. YouTube’s HLS guide lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. HLS is not just an RTMP URL change: YouTube requires MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte ranges. Select HLS in Live Control Room and configure an encoder that supports YouTube’s HLS requirements before switching endpoints. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers video in segments. Read YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the stream URL, key, and connection

  1. Copy current connection details. In Live Control Room, open stream settings and use the current stream URL and stream key. For RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL shown in settings rather than assuming an older endpoint is still appropriate. YouTube explains RTMPS setup and stream settings and key management.
  2. Check encoder protocol support. Make sure your FFmpeg build and output configuration support the protocol selected in YouTube, especially if you switched to RTMPS or HLS.
  3. Restart the output and inspect health. If the codec warning has cleared but the stream still does not arrive, inspect the encoder output and outbound internet connection. YouTube’s broader troubleshooting guidance covers encoder and connection issues. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.

Test the fix before relying on it

Restart FFmpeg with the changed settings and check the Live Control Room preview and health indicator. Confirm that both audio and video are present and that the original codec warning is gone. Test with movement and audio similar to the intended stream, then monitor health messages; YouTube recommends testing before starting a live stream. See YouTube’s encoder testing guidance.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you see Likely area to check Next action
Wrong video codec or incorrect stream format Video codec, profile, or container Use H.264 video and AAC audio as the initial error-specific baseline; confirm the outgoing stream is actually re-encoded if the command was copying source streams.
Unsupported audio codec Audio stream Switch the outgoing audio to AAC, or use MP3 where appropriate under YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS audio support.
Format warning persists after changing codecs Profile, container, or stream-copy behavior Check the exact warning again, verify the selected profile and container, and confirm FFmpeg is not copying the incompatible stream.
Codec warning is gone but YouTube does not receive the stream URL, key, protocol support, encoder output, or outbound connection Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm encoder protocol support, and inspect the encoder and connection.
A required codec is unavailable on the chosen RTMP path Protocol compatibility and latency tolerance Check YouTube HLS support and its segment and playlist constraints; account for HLS’s higher latency before changing ingest method.
