Use the still image as FFmpeg’s video input and your audio file as its audio input, then map both into a YouTube-compatible stream. The command below is an adaptable starting point—not a tested, universal bitrate prescription. You’ll need an active YouTube live stream’s ingest URL and stream key, plus a reliable upload connection.
Prepare the YouTube live stream
- Create or select a stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to enter the stream URL and key in an encoder.
- Copy the connection details: Copy the ingest server URL and stream key or stream name shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password. Do not copy the example address in a command or substitute a key from a different stream.
- Choose a profile: Select a resolution and frame rate appropriate for the image, audio, and stable capacity of your upload connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for the codec and profile you choose.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. The exact address and key format depend on the stream details YouTube provides. The API documentation notes that a stream name may be supplied separately or appended to the ingestion URL as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; use the exact connection format presented for your stream rather than assuming the key belongs in a particular part of the URL. See the LiveStreams API reference.

Run FFmpeg with a still image and audio file
In a shell with FFmpeg installed, adapt this template. Replace the filenames, ingest address, and key with your own values:

-loop 1 -framerate 30 -i "background.jpg"
-re -i "audio.mp3"
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://INGEST_ADDRESS/STREAM_KEY"
- Set image input options before its input:
-loop 1tells FFmpeg’s image2 demuxer to loop the still;-framerate 30sets the generated image frame rate. These are input options, so they appear before-i "background.jpg". Image2’s documented loop default is 0, so omitting the loop option can leave the still without the intended continuous duration. See the FFmpeg image2 documentation. - Read audio for live-style output:
-reasks FFmpeg to read the audio file at its native rate rather than as fast as possible. Its suitability can depend on the source and FFmpeg version; check behavior in your setup. - Map the inputs explicitly:
-map 0:v:0selects the image-generated video, and-map 1:a:0selects audio from the second input. This avoids relying on automatic stream selection. - Encode and send: The example encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, sets a 30 fps output, and uses FLV output for the RTMP-style connection. Replace the final URL with the exact server URL and key/name format supplied in Live Control Room.
The example’s 5 Mbps video rate is not a universal target. YouTube’s published recommendation for 1080p30 H.264 is 14 Mbps; for 1080p30 AV1 or H.265/HEVC it is 10 Mbps (YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026). These are recommendations tied to those codec and profile combinations, not guarantees about what your connection can sustain. The sample command uses H.264, so consult YouTube’s current table and test a rate your upload can reliably maintain. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video ingest; available encoder support and machine capacity affect which is practical.

Match keyframes and test stream health
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and sets a maximum of four seconds. In the example, -g 60 means a GOP of 60 frames at 30 fps, or about two seconds. If you change the output frame rate, adjust the GOP accordingly so keyframes remain about two seconds apart and within YouTube’s maximum. Encoder implementations may interpret or override settings, so verify the actual output and YouTube’s health messages.
Before relying on a stream, test with audio and video activity representative of the planned broadcast, then watch Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. YouTube advises testing before going live; its automatic transcoding produces multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. A static picture is valid video input, but testing helps confirm that the image, audio, encoding, and connection behave as intended.

Troubleshoot common problems
- No video: Confirm the image path and filename, put image input options before that image’s
-i, and map0:v:0. - The picture does not continue: Check that
-loop 1is enabled for the image input. Image2’s default loop value is 0. - YouTube receives no stream: Confirm that the intended stream is created or selected in Live Control Room and that the command uses its current ingest URL and key/name.
- YouTube reports connection or quality problems: Check the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current recommendations. Test with a stable upload connection; one bitrate does not suit every profile or connection.
- The stream should end: Stop FFmpeg from sending encoder content. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the uploaded audio and image-based video to continue without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops the uploaded material from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
