If OBS says “Encoding overloaded” during a meditation livestream, first reduce the work OBS must do: close unnecessary GPU-heavy apps, simplify the scene, and lower the output resolution. Then check OBS’s encoding and rendering statistics separately from YouTube’s stream-health and network warnings. A lower bitrate alone will not fix a local encoding overload.
What “Encoding overloaded” means—and what it doesn’t
The warning means OBS is not keeping up with the work required by its configured output. Scene complexity, filters, competing CPU or GPU use, resolution, and frame rate can all contribute; the warning alone does not identify which one is responsible. OBS discusses these factors in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

Keep three signals distinct while diagnosing:
- Encoding skips in OBS: OBS cannot encode frames quickly enough.
- Rendering lag or stalls in OBS: OBS is struggling to render the scene, often because of resource competition or scene workload.
- YouTube stream-health or network warnings: the stream may not be reaching YouTube reliably. YouTube treats available upload bandwidth as a separate concern; see its live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance and bandwidth guidance.
Lowering bitrate can help a stream fit a constrained upload connection, but it does not by itself reduce the local encoding workload that triggered OBS’s warning. Diagnose the OBS performance signal and YouTube delivery signal independently.
Fix the problem in this order
1. Reproduce the real meditation stream in a test
Before changing settings for a scheduled broadcast, run a test stream or private/unlisted rehearsal with the same OBS scene, audio, overlays, and movement you intend to use. Watch OBS’s statistics and YouTube’s stream health while the test runs. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the event and monitoring during the event.

2. Reduce competing workload
Close other GPU-heavy applications you recognize and are not using. In OBS, simplify the active scene, reduce expensive browser or media sources, and temporarily disable filters to see whether performance changes. Make one adjustment at a time so you can identify what helps. Do not close unfamiliar system processes.
3. On Windows, try running OBS as administrator
OBS lists running as administrator as a quick fix that may resolve some GPU-overload cases. This applies to Windows and is not a universal remedy. Retest before moving on.

4. Lower output resolution
In OBS, open Settings → Video and reduce Output (Scaled) Resolution. Try a lower output such as 1280×720 if you were streaming at 1920×1080. Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged if possible; changing it can require resizing sources and OBS recommends it only when resources are especially constrained. OBS notes that lowering output resolution reduces the resources needed.

5. Lower frame rate if overload continues
If you are outputting at 60 fps, test 30 fps. Frame rate affects rendering and encoding workload. Since many meditation scenes have little movement, 30 fps may be a reasonable practical first test, but this is an editorial judgment about the scene, not a meditation-specific preset from OBS or YouTube. Compare the result in a representative rehearsal.

6. Match the YouTube settings to the output
YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its current guidance recommends RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS; use the encoder options actually supported by your OBS installation and hardware. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It lists AAC or MP3 audio, with stereo at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate.
Examples from YouTube’s live bitrate table:
| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that your computer can encode at those settings or that your connection can sustain them. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings table for the row matching your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; recommendations can change. Do not substitute settings from YouTube’s video-upload guidance.

7. Check upload capacity separately
If OBS’s local performance looks clean but YouTube reports a connection problem, check the internet path rather than assuming an encoder problem. YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Include both primary and backup stream bitrates in the total if you send both. Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to the planned stream, then choose a bitrate that leaves the recommended headroom.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems8. Retest one change at a time
Repeat a representative rehearsal after each change and monitor both OBS and YouTube during the actual broadcast. If the alert persists, use the OBS log and system details to determine whether the constrained part is CPU encoding, GPU rendering, or a particular hardware encoder. Do not buy hardware based on the warning alone.

How to choose a practical meditation output
Choose settings by balancing local workload, adequate picture detail, YouTube’s bitrate recommendation, and available upload bandwidth. If a detailed scene at 1080p60 overloads the system, a test at 720p30 may reduce work while preserving enough detail for a mostly static meditation scene. Whether it is suitable depends on your content and machine; confirm it with a rehearsal rather than treating it as a guaranteed fix.
Hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a supported specialized component, but availability and suitability depend on the platform and hardware. OBS notes that encoder requirements also depend on resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. First establish from statistics and logs which part is struggling; the warning alone does not justify a computer or GPU upgrade.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| OBS encoding skips rise | Encoder cannot keep up with the configured output | Reduce scene workload, then try lower output resolution or frame rate; inspect the OBS log and encoder details. |
| OBS rendering lag or stalls rise | Scene rendering or CPU/GPU resource competition | Close recognized GPU-heavy apps, simplify sources and filters, and on Windows try OBS as administrator. |
| OBS looks stable but YouTube reports connection trouble | Upload bandwidth or network path | Check upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended headroom; choose a bitrate appropriate to the connection. |
| Overload remains after basic reductions | Specific encoder, hardware, or scene constraint not yet identified | Collect the OBS log, operating system and OBS version, encoder type, output settings, skipped and lagged frame counts, and YouTube health messages before considering an upgrade. |
